2019 Tournament of Champions

Hopefully, this is a well attended tournament, this will be the first LPGA tournament I take my daughter to. Any insight on this tournament in Orlando?

Not a lot of details at this point given that it's new. You should have a great time. The crowds are typically small, so you can get close to the players, and pics and autographs are fairly easy to obtain. I's suggest walking at least 9 holes with your daughter's favorite player, and then stake out a spot in a grandstand near the 18th to watch the other players finish their rounds, or hang out near autograph alley.

Since this is a no-cut event, any day will allow you to see the whole field. Perhaps you should plan to walk with the first group out for a few holes, then wait for the next group, and follow them for a few holes. Repeating this should allow you to see a large number of players.

I intend on taking that Friday off so that we can spend the day out there. My daughter enjoys golf, but she is hit and miss about watching it. She enjoyed Bay Hill till the Tiger crazies came through the hole we were watching, then she wanted to leave, took her to the PGA Superstore to screw around and she was good again.

The LPGA has nothing like the crowds that follow Tiger, but Michelle Wie can attract a large gathering. On the flipside, there will likely be groups that have only a handful of fans in tow. The players are generally very appreciative of the few that follow them, especially if the weather is dicey.

With Wie on the mend unless she is following one of her friends that shouldn't be a problem. I was going to follow Kang, the Kordas, Brooke Henderson & Lexi Thompson.

 

If we have time I'll follow Paula Creamer who was always my personal favorite LPGA golfer.

Michelle Wie and In Kyung Kim had confirmed but since withdrawn.

The last report is 27 out of 36 players will play but I've counted 10 no shows including Wie, Kim, In Gee Chun, Jin Young Ko, Jessica Korda, Minjee Lee, Haru Nomura, Inbee Park, Sung Hyun Park and So Yeon Ryu.

Have your daughter get an autograph from Jessica Korda, she could not have been nicer to my son and actually took the time to talk to him, only a couple minutes but she was sweet to him.

Not expecting big numbers turning out for this tournament. It's Orlando with a million things going on in the city every weekend and there is absolutely no advertising in the area so it's probably too late at this point to get numbers even with free tickets.

 

This somehow should have been tied into the NFL (or at least a few players) as a kick off into the pro-bowl weekend in Orlando and there is nothing.

The LPGA is really trying to make it seem the celebrities aren't mostly all has beens/D listers. Roger Clemmons and Toby Keith seem to be the "biggest stars" here. None of these girls are going to be starstruck playing alongside Blair O'Neal.

The new season kicks off on Thursday in Orlando. The weather forecast looks very pleasant for Thursday through Saturday, but Sunday is going to bring a thunderstorm and 20 mph winds.

 

Don't forget to check your DVR schedule, as the tournament has split coverage on TGC/NBC on Saturday and Sunday.

Given that the field is made up of winners from the past two seasons, I certainly wouldn't categorize it as weak. However, missing 5 out of the World's Top 10 does hurt.

The pairings are out (http://www.lpga.com/...mpions/pairings), and they are a bit strange. Group 2, 4, and 6 are not listed. Normally the groups would go off on the 10th tee. I have to assume the groups will be celebrities only playing without a pro. What happens when you send out 30+ invites, and only 27 accept? My guess is that they have more celebrities than pros.

I'll be attending with my wife and another lady golfer who have been wanting to see an LPGA event, rather than just the API.

 

My wife learned how to play golf by watching Michelle Wie swings on youtube, so this will be cool for her. Looks like Wie is not attending, though.

 

With that said, I dont think attendance is going to be too stellar. They are currently giving away tickets at a local brewery, and IOA is also giving hundreds away to employees and their friends. Maybe it's because both companies are sponsors, but who knows. It'll be fun either way.

Attendance is generally poor at most U.S. tournaments. It's a shame, but it does allow one to get close to the action. I followed Tiger once for 18 holes at the BMW. Ha. I think I saw 3 swings.

I do to. They have an area dedicated to Sorenstam in the hospital and she wanted to know as much about her as possible since they share an “interest” in golf.

Oh am I glad the season is starting. Got swamped by real life in December and the new year, missed the whole post-season ... happy to have the tour to think about again.

 

This sure looks like an unusual one. Not sure I understand it, will it be like a pro am? Hard to figure who will do best with this setup. Lexi's an interesting choice, and that's a nice turn around from how things were just shortly before the globe.

 

Wish some hadn't withdrawn, I guess that's life as an Inky fan sometimes ... but still looks like a fantastic list for such a small field. Really glad In Gee is there after all, maybe this will be a good atmosphere for her.
