J13's WITB: Update- FUJIKURA AXIOM

Recommended Posts

As some of the new toys come out I have dabbled a bit despite the tennis elbow. Fortunately, the elbow has actually started healing so I'm able to hit balls at 75-80% speed. Not great for numbers (which in winter is useless anyway) but I'm at least able to get a feel for the club.

Here ya go

Cobra - wow, they did a great job and the shape is perfect. Yellow isn't for me but the white would do nicely. Overall, wow, cannon.

Callaway Apex Pro's - Cally got it right, shape is pretty good to my eye but the chrome looks great and the feel is butter. Well done

+1, From the pics and YouTube reviews I've seen the F9 looks to have a great shape/footprint to it.

Have you had a chance to compare the new Apex Pro to your 745's? Lastly are they close in size/offset?

I know you’re not a big hybrid guy, but did you get a chance to try the new Apex hybrid? They have nice classy look in a small package. I was really impressed with the numbers I was getting out of it and the forgiveness was incredible for how small it is.

Apex Pro's are smaller than the 745's. Offset look similar though. If I had to guess I would say the Apex Pro launch a little lower (which i like) based on hitting it indoors. Without hitting them outside there's not much more I can say. Overall I am impressed with them. Cally did a great job.

Have not seen the Hybrid yet, heard it looks great though. I don't dislike hybrids and still put my 815Alpha in from time to time, I just prefer the control and spin of a driving iron.

J, have you tried the new Srixon ball yet?

Not yet but I have heard a lot of good things about the slightly softer cover. I"m a big fan of the XV and see no reason to switch.

Haha I love my 585/785's combo but something about the 745 shape and look is just perfection + the tungsten in the long irons. I hope they go back to that exact look in the next release.

Yes I posted a few shots of things i'm testing :D Weather is turning and my elbow feels pretty darn good. It's still not 100% but it's close thanks to a change in the treatment plan and another cortisone shot. So far so good and it feels almost normal again. If it begins to bother me again I might just do surgery after the season is over. Hopefully, that doesn't happen but we'll see.

Here's a few pics, keep in mind this is on course in the real world.

Yeah no worries, I'll add more in here as I continue testing. Rogue 130msi Silver has really impressed me. My first outing with it didn't go so great (actually listed on the bst for like 2 hrs before pulling it down haha) but i quickly realized it was user error and me not having the driver set up correctly.

I heard the Apex Pros were loud, you didn't experience that?

Didn't notice any click. I try not to comment on sound until I hit the club outdoors.

hmmmm can you please define "cannon"!?

Despite me swinging slower than normal (around 105mph) it seemed to jump off the face. And for a quick reference I hit a few other drivers side by side to get an apples to apples and it was definitely a little faster. I'll be interested to see how it performs when I can put a normal swing on it. It's a must try if your looking for a new driver.

I was hoping it would be in the same spin range as M5, but for me it's quite a bit higher spin. Did you see the same?

My initial impression was I didn't like the line on the crown but loved the compact shape. My impression now is I really love the shape and I honestly don't see the line at address so it's a non factor. Sound is ok, not as loud as what some said early on but i think that was an issue with an early batch or something. Right now i'm dialing it in with lead tape but once i find my sweet spot i'll take the tape off and hotmelt to spec which obviously will drastically improve acoustics to a more muted sound.

Overall it reminds me A LOT of the FT Tour which was an OG driver.

Talking Stock M5 vs Stock SZ yes the M5 can go lower (when i tested like 300rpm lower) but i'm looking for low 2000's, I don't want sub 2000. Now if you want to make the SZ LOW spin then add a heavier weight to the front port and have at it. I know some players on tour add a lighter rear sliding weight with heavier front weight but most don't as they want control vs all out distance. That's the great part about the TM and Cally. So many options to dial it in I think it really comes down to what you feel more confident looking down at.

Talking to someone in the industry I heard that TM is handpicking the lower CT models and sending them to retail. So unless I see a tour model m5 it’s between the Cally SZ and the F9. They actually went to big box store and tested the m5 against the SZ and it confirmed their findings

I didn’t even think they tested every retail head, I thought they just spot checked to confirm tolerance. The difference between retail and tour issue in the past was only that tour issue was measured.

Isn’t the entire point of the resin was to make all heads the same CT. I’ve owned heads almost exact same spec but different CT and I personally don’t think 10cts makes enough difference (if any) to impact score. Of course if you offered 252 or 242 to me I’d take 252.

CT of 240 vs 257 makes no discernable difference in distance. Tom Wishon spoke on this before and how it's like 1-2yds.

It was actually Callaway that did this. They went into a few big box stores. Took random heads... by the way Cobra was up there holding their own with Callaway. But I don’t know how much the difference in CT were. Like the above post it could have been a few CT difference. But all the heads were slower from what I was told. And again this is from someone at Callaway so take it with a grain of salt lol

This is what Tom Wishon said in an article. Does it make a little difference? Yes. Does it make a huge difference when compared to getting properly fit or increasing swing speed through training? No, not even close.

  • Few driver heads are made with the CT at the 257 µsec limit of the rules of golf. Plus/minus manufacturing tolerances commonly occur such that conforming drivers exist today within a range of CT 225 to CT 257. For a golfer with a 100 mph driver clubhead speed, that random difference in CT can mean a carry distance difference of 5 to 6 yards.

To me it sounds kind of strange to say they handpick and send lower to retail. I would think they would handpick and send higher to tour......What percent of TM drivers do you think are retail and what percent do you think are not?
