Is the Ahina still relevant?

So, I'm wanting to grab a 60 gram shaft that plays a little long to try out in my Epic and soon to be Epic Flash. I'm looking for something that is a similar profile to the Diamana DF as I have a 70 gram version that plays 45". I don't want to break the bank and found an Ahina on the bay for around $60 that will play 45.5".

Question is, can I expect a large difference in performance and feel vs. the more current offerings? Have shafts really come that much further in the last 6-7 years?

It's hard to find any comparisons due to the Ahina being as old as it is. Plus, I don't know that it was all that popular when it came out.

6 or 7 years is not too old for shafts. People use plentt of shafts that old...or older. The GD Ad di has to be that old and people still rave about them. Shaft companies are always introducing new materials and tech but I dont think there is too much difference within the last 7 years.

I would search some Ahina reviews and go off of those. There will likely be no direct comparisons.

I haven't hit he DF but I still think the original Whiteboard is superb and relevant so the Ahina definitely isn't outdated. In comparison to the OG Whiteboard it is abit tighter with not quite as much feel but even lower spin/launch. Better than the D+ shafts I've hit, though I haven't hit the 'LTD' version. I still play the Kai'li which came out at the same time in my fairway woods and it's great.

If the shaft fits your swing and pairs well with the head, and gets the results you want, I don't see anything ever being not relevant. Unless we're talking hickory :)

I had an Ahina back in the day. It has just been so long. I am not expecting there to be a huge difference. And, in all reality, $60 isn't much of an investment. I may just pick it up and see how it plays.

Absolutely still relevant. I'm using Kai'li in the 3w and it's as good of a fairway shaft as anything else I've stuck in... probably the best so far and I've used all of the blueboard style profiles, except for BF (too pricey still).

Yeah, the Kai'Li was one of my favorite shafts. I didn't care much for the B Series from a few years back. I really want to try the BF, but I agree, it is just too pricey. The DF I have is a prototype that I got on ebay for $60. It is 70 grams but feels really light to me. I think it's because it plays shorter than I am used to. It isn't as tip heavy as I would have thought it would be. But, being a prototype, the specs may be a little different from the final retail version.

In my opinion the ahina is one of the worst diamana shafts made. Felt really odd to me and several others I know who got them back in the day. Btw diamana is my favorite line of shafts.

Was it their worst shaft or a bad feel/for for YOU?

That's the thing. I won't know unless I buy it and give it a shot. I have a feeling that overall, it will be just fine. Since I haven't played a shaft from that time for a while, I wasn't sure if there was a noticeable difference. As head designs change, it seems shaft design follows suit. I will probably pull the trigger just because it's got to be close to the same profile as the 70 gram DF I have. Probably some small differences in performance and feel. But, I guess they would probably be negligible.

Myself and a few other friends of mine who were all big fans of the blueboard, whiteboard, kaili all thought the shaft had a very weird kick to it and felt off. You don't see alot of these shafts around and even back when it was newer not many people gravitated towards it. Just my opinion. Now the Kaili on the other hand is one of the best fairway shafts I have ever tried. I have had at least 10 of those in different clubs and still play a couple in some cbx fairways.

Interesting take. When i first shafted up the Ahina 70 i too felt it had one weird high kickpoint and that it played floppy. I did not overly have this problem with the WB73. However once i tipped it a little it felt normal and was actually a really decent shaft. So my take is that if you have it set up slightly soft it performs woefully and feels absurd with that weird kick. Once tuned in it's great.

Tipping it wouldn't have any effect on the high kick point. Going to a stiffer flex would tighten it up. I really just didn't like this shaft and it wasn't very popular for a diamana shaft. Also I didn't like the B series that much.

I played an Ahina 80x in my old Titleist 910D3 for years and I loved it. I'm also a big fan of the Kai'li as its easier for me to turn over. A great generation of shafts as far as i'm concerned, the originals were so legendary that the follow up was always going to get less love.

I play an Ahina 60x in my Epic SZ. Absolutely love it. Always been a fan of the older Diamana whiteboard series in drivers and really like the BluBoards and Kali’s in fairways too. I did not notice any appreciable kick difference between whiteboard, Ahina or D+ models. To me the Ahina just feels a bit smoother than the Whiteboard and a bit more solid than than the D+. Note all these comments apply to the 60/63 model in X flex which, for me, are quite a bit easier to load than the 70/73 models.

The only recent shaft I slightly prefer is the new Evenflow white that is stock in new TS2/TS3 drivers. Does not feel as smooth as the Ahina but was getting another 1 to 2 mph clubhead speed on Trackman and just as good dispersion.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have been swinging the Pro Orange on a simulator the last few weeks. I don't know what it is about a counter-balanced shaft, but it feels like my timing is actually much better than it has been in the past. That, and it doesn't feel as heavy as it initially did. Must be the counter-balance at play. I am still on the fence on whether or not I want to introduce another variable to my indecision. But, I don't think I would be leaving much on the table should I go with the Ahina.

  • 3 years later...

FWIW its 2022 and I just ordered an 'ahina off eBay to put into my rogue st ls. Ive tried tensei 1k, aldila rogue 130msi, and an LA golf shaft in there that have all been 'fitted' on separate occasions and whatever the case I still find myself going back to my old ping g20 with the ahina in it.. for whatever reason I feel I can swing much smoother and more naturally with it. I figured (Sunk cost fallacy at work) ive already got so much into the Rogue that I might as well pick up a deadstock ahina from the bay for 50 bucks and have it built to the same specs as the one in my g20, and hopefully get some of the low spin benefits from the newer head as I do find g20 to balloon/spin a bit too much resulting in a less penetrating flight. Much straighter and more controllable than the other shafts mentioned however.

I play an Ahina 90X in my hybrid. Great shaft. Beat out a Diamana D+ 90X and Tensei Blue 85TX. It *does* have a high kickpoint, and hits a low running ball, for me. Good tee shaft, IMO. Don't know how relevant my hybrid would be to the OP's 60X wood option, but there you have it.

I have an 'ahina 60X (ion plated) in my garage.  Its probably still the best driver shaft I've ever hit.  So stable, and holds its line great.

Every time I take it out for a test run I wind up wondering why I ever took it out of the bag.

Then the 'ho in me wants to try something else, and several shafts later I look at it again and take it back out.  Hmmm, its about that time again.  LMAO
