What should I add to my bag?

Dashfast

Recommended Posts

I currently have 12 clubs in my bag and would love to round it out by adding a couple more. One important note: I cannot hit a 3W further than my 2H (due to not knowing how to swing a 3W properly). Here's what I'm playing and the carry distances:

Ping G Driver 9.5 (stock Alta 55 stiff shaft) - 250

Ping G400 2 Hybrid (stock Alta CB 70 stiff shaft) - 220

Ping i20 5 Iron (CFS stiff) - 195

Ping i20 6 Iron (CFS stiff) - 185

Ping i20 7 Iron (CFS stiff) - 175

Ping i20 8 Iron (CFS stiff) - 160

Ping i20 9 Iron (CFS stiff) - 145

Ping i20 P Wedge (CFS stiff) - 130

Ping i20 S Wedge (CFS stiff) - 100

Ping i20 L Wedge (CFS stiff) - 85

Thanks for any/all advice and comments in advance.

How about a 3 or 4 hybrid to close the gap between your 5i and 2 hybrid. Otherwise looks good,

Let's do a double-check: assuming you have a putter you didn't list, it seems like you only have 11 clubs in the bag.

Consider adding:

  • i20 U Wedge
  • Consider a 4W. A little more loft than a 3W. The average golfer can hit 4W more reliably - and sometimes longer - than a 3W.
  • Also, a 3H or 4H (check which splits 5i-2H distance gap best)

And a question on your driver distance: Is that carry, or total distance with rollout?

Also, have someone check your set-up on FWs. Ball position at address might be a problem.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Btw is that the original slot line inertial putter from the late 80’s in your bag?

The most obvious add is a gap wedge.

I would add a 4i or 4-utility and see if you can swap out the 2 hybrid for a 4W.

I'd call it good and wouldn't add anything. Sometimes less is more. Seems like you have all of the distances covered, especially if just can choke up and hit soft cuts with your hybrid and PW. No need to spend $ just because your allowed 14 clubs. I play with 12 and have all of my gaps covered.

I could probably play driver,hybrid,5,7,9,PW,swing,putter (8 clubs) and have my gaps covered and shoot my average score. High 70's/low 80's....

I like the idea of the guy above me; less is more. However, a gap from 130 to 100 is too much. The i20 u wedge would be a good fit in there.

As you get better, eliminate the 2 hybrid and go 3 hybrid, 4 wood. 3h should go 205-215, 4w should go 230ish. No need to do that until you are ready, though.

Properly and consistently hitting a wood from the deck is a hard skill to acquire.

There's nothing in the rule book that says you can't play drunk.

No. My SL-583F came from the second wave of SlotLines put out by Dynamic Brands (BagBoy, other things) in 2009. Pictures below.

Here is a review for the 2009 DB SlotLines: http://www.equip2gol...urns-with-new-putters/

I regripped mine with a SuperStroke MidSlim 2.0 grip - I put the 50 gram backweight in the butt so it didn't feel so head-heavy.

SlotLine rather faded after the 2009 rebirth - couldn't get the volume of sales to make the 14 models profitable.

Just by chance, my pro and clubfitter at BackspinGolf.com near St. Louis contacted DB about buying the SlotLine name and patents. He said the price was more than he was willing to pay. Baskspin ended up with a lot of legacy SlotLine putters - the one I have was a little-used demo.

Ping 4 wood or g400 5 wood and crank down. I suspect. They shorter shaft in woods. 42 or 42.5". Will make it much easier!

I20 4 iron

I20 U wedge

4 iron and u wedge should be easy enough to find on Ebay or order matching from PING.

Gaps are between 2h and 5i, and pw and sw.

So....., 4i/4h, and gap wedge, would be my recommendations.

Hit em good

Something NOT ping. I kid. I kid.

You need a putter, but that is such a personal preference thing that I don't think anyone can actually recommend you one. Go get fitted and roll a couple dozen different styles and lengths. Yes, a couple dozen...

Gap wedge is key. I use mine a fair amount. It's not great to have 8 degrees of separation between PW and SW.

Given the age of those irons, I would add a groove sharpener.

Ping irons are virtually indestructible so I doubt the OP has any significant wear on the grooves.

Gap wedge for starters. Average amateur golfers should always be playing 4 wedges in my opinion.
