Cutting Down Putter -> Impact on Weight

Just like any other club, you lower the swingweight by 6 points, which of course makes the head feel much lighter to you.

The overall weight will drop by a few grams. Whatever the weight is of that one inch piece of shaft. Maybe 3 grams. Totally unimportant and impossible to sense.

There is no “balance” change to speak of.

If you wish to know what it will feel like, choke down an inch. That’s really all you’re doing when you cut it.

So 1 inch changes swing weight by 6 points? That seems like a lot. Does putting weight in the end of the shaft (counterweight grip) offset it in the same way or will that change the feel differently?

Most playeres benefit from less headwgt and more grip weight than standard, so dont worry about going shorter. Resetting original sw is not a good idea, find the total wgt and balance thats good for you, and thats most likely not the original balance.

Totally agree with Howard.

Majority of putter head weights are so heavy these days and 35” is actually the wrong length to have it on. The so called fix is a thick grip with more weight (though not all thick grips are significantly heavier) and it feels more normal and may workie.

Cutting down an inch actually gets to the more appropriate length for the heavier head. I’d stick a normal grip (or whatever you like) on and call it. Putting a heavy grip on a shortened club can actually Word not allowed backward and may not be necessarily.

If I take a 69g grip off, cut down 1 1/2” and put a 75g on is it close to a wash? It’s an old Odyssey White Hot #5 that I will probably never replace. I don’t know the head weight of those heads.

I cut down a 35" Odyssey 7 RX to 33" and put lead tape under the grip and the sole of the putter until it felt right to me. Very subtle and subjective but I don't think it ruins the putter at all, have been doing this for years.

No. A heavier grip will make the swingweight even lighter.

You need to add weight to the head if you wish to maintain a similar head feel after shortening it.

If you want the head to feel the same after chopping 1.5 inches add 18-20 grams of head weight. 12 grams per inch.

Does one simply apply grip tape directly over the lead tape once desired weight is there? Hope this doesn’t seem like a dumb question. Tried PM but it wouldn’t let me. Thanks.
