QOTD: Should the PGA Show be open to the Public?

GolfChannel

Question of the Day:

Should the PGA Show be open to the general public or at least offer a set amount of public tickets every year?

While most of us on here would love to go drool over the new stuff I say no. It is really all about getting your clubs, new clothing line, or whatever else your trying to sell into pro shops and golf stores. If I were a startup company spending a bunch of money to be there I would be ticked off if I had to spend a day with lookie loos.

But I still would love to walk around and eye ball all the new toys!

QOTD: Should we stop having QOTDs? I mean the answer is usually fairly obvious, as in this case.

It is not open to the public for a reason - it's a Vegas trade show (that's not in Vegas), and a chance for the Players in the equipment industry to get together and bounce ideas around, try to get some purchase orders from retailers, and probably play some golf. Sure, I'd like to go ONCE, but after that would probably be like the North Coast Golf Expo each year.

No, but I do wish that the Golfweek Golfest was right after like it used to be. I was there every year, but slowly the vendors stopped staying. Last one I remember was on the range at Champions Gate and had about 10 tents and that was it.

No. It would inundate vendors with countless people that contribute zero to their business and keep them from doing what they are there for in the first place.

I’ll go against the grain and say yes BUT it should be after the Show is over for the shops and people doing business. Let the new up and coming companies that want to stick around, stick around. Let some of the mail order or direct to consumer companies do some business and generate some buzz.

That said, that should be after the show is done with the shops, pros, courses, etc. No way should the general public be there during those days.

This is in line with what I thought, which is a "qualified" yes. There should be industry-specific days, but if they opened the weekend to a public preview (even a limited one) they would probably generate a ton of additional buzz and potential business with early release to those in attendance (at normal cost or even show specific package deals).

I don't see why they couldn't offer maybe one day for the public, on the final day maybe. Sell tickets, $10/$20 to get in an offset the cost and provide more for the industry folks who sometimes spend big $ to travel to the show for their business.

I have gone a couple of times, and I do enjoy it being industry only for the couple days I go, that is for sure.

Why should they? There is no valid reason and it's a waste of time and resources.

I don't think it matters. The PGA Show has become a shell of its former self. I don't think it will exist in 10 years.

Basically, why I asked the question.

Probably not. This is a B2B event, and the general public would not mesh well. I will lead off with an analysis of changing status of the show, and follow up with problems with the general public.

A theme from across golfdom: the PGA Merchandise Show has become more a celebration of golf than three days of deal-making from years past.

A manager and club-fitter from a local golf chain says with the modern supply-chain function and merchandise plans, he makes most of his company's orders in the Fall quarter. This same point appears in a recent commentary on the event:

https://Not allowed because of spam.co...till-relevant/

Also, major OEMs sometimes skip the event if they don't have a lot of new models to showcase. Nike skipped in 2016, and announced a few weeks later than it was exiting the golf hard-goods industry. TaylorMade is skipping 2019 to save money.

According to several sources, any one of the Big 5 (TaylorMade, Callaway, Cobra-PUMA, PING, and Titleist) can easily spend over a million dollars during the show. (Not allowed because of spam)

Purchasing connections from some of the smaller apparel manufacturers and are more likely to take place at the merchandise show than major hard-good orders.

Also, the show serves the PGA of America, letting the manufacturers discuss the future equipment concepts with the club pros. And, club pros are often equipment advisors for their equipment sponsor.

I got to go to the 2016 show, a one-time shot as a correspondent for a golf blog. It is definitely a B2B atmosphere. In all our blog stories and video clips uploaded from on site, correspondents were required to mention that this was a B2B event not open to the general public.

Why to leave out the general public?

Again, this is a B2B event, well covered by different branches of the media.

First of all, how would you decide who gets to go? From upscale clubs, will the board chairman hold a grudge against the head pro if he and his wife don't get to go?

Second, do club and public golfers know how to behave? Would they expect a cornucopia of freebies? A company that manages local courses quit attending the local golf expo. Rather than purchasing discount passes, most attendees thought they were entitled to a free foursome of golf. Despite the circus atmosphere, freebies at the M-S are rather limited, even for insiders.

Backers of letting the public into the show say they can try out golf clubs at the demo day and maybe buy some. The demo day, as is, is a sea of people. The general public would only add to the congestion.

And do you want them buying clubs there?. That's the purpose of local demo days. Bring in the public to Orlando, and you're taking business away from local club pros - many of whom are PGA members - and off-course local shops. The OEMs want to maintain good relations with the locals - not undercut them.

Others suggest extending the show into a full Friday and Saturday segment just for the general public. Bad idea! Having seen one show, I can tell you that after the Monday set-up, the Tuesday demo day, and followup 12-hour event cycles, everyone is running on empty by Thursday evening. Customer-service attitudes would be at dangerously low levels by Saturday AM.

So, let's review: The PGA M-Show is a B2B event. It needs to stay that way, even if the industry has to contract its scope a bit.
