New Cobra MIM Wedge

Recommended Posts

And this is good?....Bad?.... Doesn’t matter?

I just looked up Metal injection molding on Wikipedia and I can’t seem to figure out why this process is something the average joe should care about or why Cobra would care to market a club that way.

It is a quite interesting read, but I don’t see the benefits to the end user. It isn’t stronger or “better” that I can tell. Is it cheaper than casting or forging? Is it quicker? More precise? Will we get less expensive golf clubs?

Lots of questions but I do find the new technique quite interesting.

Does this process perhaps result in greater uniformity throughout the head as opposed to a traditional casting process? Maybe reduce or eliminate the chances of air pockets that can affect feel/sound? Just wondering - don't know.

Metal injection is based on plastic injection and if they share the same benefits it will produce heads much faster than regular castings and the tolerances will be better aswell.

I only deal with plastic injection so these are my thoughts, but it is quite impressive how fast it can produce complex parts.

FAR. more complicated than plastic and more steps.

Hmmm yeah not sure the benefits of doing this for something that's not very complex in shape or structure. Perhaps a way to ensure better QC? It sounds like how they make sintered magnets for large motor applications when machining is difficult and needs to be really precision without machine steps.

Kiiiiiind of seems like more of a marketing ploy than an actual technological jump in wedge performance. Also, as an aside, I really wish Cobra would make high bounce relief ground wedge design like the vokey D grind. I loved all my Cobra wedges but the "low" grind didn't have enough bounce for soft conditions. Many a sod was laid using my PUR's and my Tour Trusty's.

You'd get a denser finished product than a straight-up casting, and the process produces less waste.

A couple of my engineering buddies worked for DeWalt for a while. The "powdered" metal process is popular for making things like small meshing gears.

So is this MIM stuff more durable? Tighter tolerances? Softer feel? I don't quite get it, but as long as they make the full assortment of wedges, I'm a buyer. My original King Cobra wedges are worn out.

Durability depends on the material used and finish.

Yes to potentially tighter tolerances. Injection molding is more precise.

Softer feel is based on material and geometry.

In the end, MIM is just another type of manufacturing process and Cobra has a business to run. It wouldn't be used unless it provides a benefit to product profitability and quality, which could be reducing manufacturing time, scrap and rework of product that didn't quite turn out to spec.

Its benefit is mainly for precision components but with this being a bladed style wedge (aka hunk of metal on a stick), I'm skeptical of significant benefits to the CONSUMER (might be better for Cobra's costs) And then marketing will get the hype machine turning. I see there's already a nice big "MIM" stamping, yet I don't see "CAST" stamped on my great feeling RTX2's...

Still interested in these. Was a big fan of the Tour Trusty and would definitely game Cobra wedges again.

Just please make a 48* Cobra.
