Coy M Swing Thread - Update 6/23/20

Hello,

I'm 24, I started having pain while golfing about 5 years ago. At the time I worked at a country club and either played 18 holes or hit a good amount of balls on the range, daily. I started having pain on my right side (what I thought was my back) and it eventually got to the point I stopped playing. Before I threw in the towel I went chiro, PT, orthopedic doctor, had cortisone shots and MRIs (lumbar/pelvic). None had helped me at all.

In the recent months I decided to go back to PT and see if it could fix this issue. I've been going for about 2 months now (once a week). What I've found out is the pain is actually coming from my hip. My PT is going to review both the videos I've linked to see if he see's anything that I'm doing that could have caused the issue to start. He has told me he is not an expert in golf technique but has some experience with it.

My question to everyone is, can you see anything drastic that would cause an issue to my right hip during my swing?

It's quite possible that's the source of your pain, but I'm no doctor. I do know that a weaker grip would do you wonders.

I can't currently hit on the range due to pain. The pain has gotten better since starting PT, but not to the point were I can hit balls back to back for a decent amount of time. But I am aware that I have a strong grip and I play w/ a very closed face. (When I'm not hitting the ball well I hit big hooks).

How do you know it is your hip and not a compressed disk in your spine sending pain out to your hip?

Have you seen a doc? MRI or CT or?

Is it an ache or is it shooting pain?

I concur.

I had shooting pains at the bottom of my left buttocks, then expanded to the side of my left leg to the point where I could not walk without slating like I was dodging a ball.

It was a herniated disk tapping a nerve which shot pain to my buttocks and leg. I didn't feel any pain in my back.

When I initially had the pains I went to orthopedic doctor that first took X-rays and then ordered a lumbar MRI. Then saw 2nd spine specialist that wanted a pelvic MRI. All came back clear. It's always actually felt like pain in my lower right back, haven't had relief until recent by doing stretches and strengthening of the hip.

I would classify it has a deep dull pain in my side but when I bend to certain point it gets pretty painful.

You appear to be sliding and kicking the right hip up and out towards the target line/ball very hard.

Yep, I tried the move similar to you're doing there and I lasted about 30 mins before herniating a disc.

I'm no PT and no golf instructor, but I've been there. It looks like you're simultaneously putting the role of braking on both your hip flexors and your lumbar spine. My spine cried uncle first... Sounds like in your case it's your hip.

May want to consider (after healing) seeing a good coach who can move you toward a less drastic move. As an extreme alternative I'm thinking the sort of Rocco Mediate 'stand-up' type post and follow-through.

Good luck!

*UPDATE* I've been going to PT for my right hip for about 2.5 months and have made some progress. I've mainly noticed a huge improvement in resting pain but I'm still getting pain while getting into particular positions (internal rotation of hip & certain pelvic positions). I have been golfing some through the process but I feel like it's not allowing me to fully heal. I'm going to take ~1 month off from any swinging and continue my PT. My physio said if this doesn't improve those positions he would recommend going to a hip orthopedic doctor because it's possibly labrum damage in the hip.

Anyone had experience with labrum damage in the hip?

If you play or hit balls 18 hours a day like you posted in the OP you are bound to have soreness. :)

Here are current videos: I've tried to weaken my right hand grip to help with hooding the face. Both of these were fairly good but felt like they were hit off the toe. I still believe I'm EEing in my swing which is what is causing irritation to my right hip. I would love some feedback from everyone.

There are 2 things that stand out to me right away when looking at your swing. First, is your setup. In the latest videos, its easier to tell with your alignment stick on the ground, but you set up with closed feet, open hips and open shoulders. If you setup that way consistently, it might explain some of the hooded face issues.

Second, in your backswing you have very little hip turn with a big hip slide. This will definitely put more strain on the lower back/hip area. In the backswing you need to let the right leg straighten quite a bit (not locked out straight) and turn the hips. Pressure on the right foot should not go to the outside of the foot. Taking care of that will allow you to have room in the downswing to not EE. Depending on how you react to having actual hip turn in the backswing you may or may not need to have a new feel in downswing to get your hips moving properly there as well.

Slow motion, lots of 1/2 speed swings and mirror work are highly recommended to start making any changes in the swing.

Good Luck!

Hope the hip is doing well

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad you commented this because I've been reviewing my swing and those two things stuck out to me as well. I've been looking up videos and drills to correct these problems.

Doesn’t look like that swing, which looks pretty decent BTW, should cause injuries?

Maybe a slower backswing and slight pause at the top might let your body settle a bit before your downswing?

I don't think technique changes are going to help that much while you're still injured.

It's probably the last thing you want to hear, but it may be time to rest a bit longer from golf until things heal up. That way you can fully assess if any swing changes are keeping you out of harm's way.

I'm not unlike you. I tell myself I'm not going to swing a club for 4 weeks to give myself a chance to heal. On day 2 I'm feeling a little better. On day 3 I'm swinging a club again. It's hard.

Had almost the same thing. Check out a muscle called Quadratus Lumborum.

I've been doing PT for this injury and pretty much checked out every thing it could be (QL was one of them). What my PT narrowed it down to is hip impingement. Once we started posterior hip mobilizations with hip strengthening exercises I started feeling better very quickly. I appreciate your comment!

Update on PT: I went to see a new Physio this past weekend. He did a full assessment on my low back and hip and confirmed my problem is coming from the hip joint. He said I have a anterior femoral glide in my hip joint. This is causing a pinching in the front of the hip, painful and limited internal rotation of the hip, and pain when going into hip extension. He confirmed this by doing a manual posterior glide of the femur and putting my hip through different ranges of motion without me experiencing any pain. I'm really relieved now that the exact problem has been found and I have a exercise plan to directly correct the issue!

Ive had that issue. I have come to the conclusion that it was caused due to me sliding my hips in the backswing. Now that ive focused on rotation only the pain has gone away......I mean i did PT as well and what not too.

I'm pretty sure that's what caused mine: sliding my hips and really firing hard on downswing and sliding. The thing for me is, I had the pain and it manifested and felt like a back issue so for years my hip was never addressed which caused it to really get bad. BUT after working on hip strength the pain I was having is quickly dissipating.

Swing changes update! I've been working on keeping the club more on plane in my back swing instead of getting it way behind me and under plane. It almost feels like I'm hinging straight up once I get to p2. One thing I've noticed is when going from p2 to p4 I tend to stop rotating my pelvis and upper body. it's still a work in progress but I'm already getting way better ball flight results (ball is flying A LOT straighter). All comments and feedback is welcomed! Thanks for looking.

Starting to look better.

As you said, still need to work on that hip turn. Doesn't look like you are sliding really in the back swing.

Couple thoughts to try for backswing.... move right hip towards the target, or rotate tailbone towards left heel.

Of course keep the tilts in the hip as you do that.
