With the compression increase for 2019 version I’m looking at switching to the TP5 from the TP5X.

Exactly this for me too; from when the new specs were announced.....

What are the new compressions on the 2019 TP5 and TP5X?

2017 – TP5 83, TP5x 90

2019 – TP5 85, TP5x 97

SO, I'm confused. In this age of "softer" compression why would a major OEM increase compression and produce a harder feeling ball..... HELP ???

As I understood it the core is low compression, but the outer layers are firmer to get different characteristics based on how much it is compressed.

IHFN has it right, and it's a nicely succinct version of what TM has on its site. Gradational core wrapped by three more progressively firmer layers, then urethane. More spin from in-close. Looks like both the new ones will compete favorably. Have hit a few '17 5xs and like them.

I must have been lucky bc I've been playing the original TP5 since before it was officially released and have never scuffed one. And considering I hit down 3-5* on my iron shots, its not as if I baby them.

Only time I have scuffed one that I can remember:

Extreme cartpath abuse.

Parking lot out of bounds.

Banging one off the houses to the right of the 18th hole on the Old Course - (that one remains on my shelf :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: )

When I saw the preview and they kept talking about needing to make the ball more scuff resistant I absolutely was scratching my head. I would go multiple rounds on the same ball and never once had to Chuck one because of a scuff.

I always found the current TP5x to be fairly soft feeling for an X so I think they have a bit of wiggle room to add some firmness and still not lose what made this iteration special. That said, I hope they don't mess it up.

So the new balls are up on the TM site - available for purchase 2/15 - but nothing about a yellow version.

Much disapoint.

I love Taylormade balls. I just wish they would have stuck with the Tour Preferred and Tour Preferred X names much like Titleist with ProV1 and ProV1X. TP5 sounds like a futuristic toilet paper.

Tour Preferred went to 'TP'. The 5 layers; made it "TP5".

With the weight of the ink saved; the Engineers did some re-distribution and increased the balls performance. Its true

All kidding aside, I would have been fine with TP and TPX for shorthand. When TP5 first dropped I wrongly assumed it was separate line of balls and that TP and TPX would be continued. Boy was I wrong, but I still don't see the value of foregoing name recognition and cachet just to advertise that your ball has five layers (and if I remember correctly the TPX was already a five layer ball). Of course Taylormade has never been accused of being consistent when it comes to naming its equipment. With the M line of drivers and game improvement irons, perhaps they've turned a corner on consistency.

Then again, maybe they'll release the FastAeroSpeedRocketJetBallz driver next year.

When a name remains the same, it means it met or exceeded sales expectations. Reboots are a way to help differentiate vs the predecessor when it falls short of sales expectations.

Penta, Lethal, Tour Preferred and Tour Preferred X, TP5 and TP5X and now TP5 and TP5X again. Glad they are keeping the same name - just makes it simpler. Callaway and Srixon seem to be doing the same with their tour balls. All following the godfather V1 and V1X.

Like looking for Campbell's soup - can't miss that packaging because it never changes!

There is much more to compression than a single number.

"Also inside the new TP5 and TP5x balls is the Tri-Fast Core, which consists of an extra-large, low-compression inner core (16 compression in TP5 & 25 compression in TP5x) and a progressively stiffer outer core and mantle."

"The Dual-Spin Cover boasts an ultra-soft cast urethane cover and a 30 per cent more rigid inner cover. This system creates a condition that is ideal for greenside control, as the rigid inner cover forces the soft urethane cover into wedge grooves for maximum spin generation."

https://www.golf-monthly.co.uk/gear/gear-news/2019-taylormade-tp5-tp5x-balls-unveiled-171066

Seems like the "more rigid inner cover" (all 3 layers combined?) would account for going from 90 to 97 with the 5x.

Not sure about the inner cover forcing the urethane into the wedge grooves, but it sounds good.

Certainly a good point, but I suspect getting more Tour players to start playing a Taylormade ball (ala Rory and Rickie) is a much bigger factor in moving the sales needle when it comes to golf balls. I also wonder how much TaylorMade pushes its balls to club pros. I'm most assuredly a golf outsider but it appears Titleist is very much dedicated to winning club pro hearts and minds through free balls. I wonder how well that strategy works for them. How many people play Titleist because that's what the club sells and what the pro plays?

The "more rigid inner cover" is the 4th layer, the one immediately underneath the cast urethane outer cover. This is the new HFM material that TaylorMade has been touting. It's 30% stiffer than the previous material used in this layer and is primarily responsible for the increase in overall compression of the TP5x. This new material acts like a stiffer spring to retain energy at impact and marginally increase face deflection, all of which increase ball speed on longer shots.

TaylorMade considers this 4th layer and the outer urethane cover to be their "dual-spin cover." On the slow shots around the greens and approach wedges, the 4th layer resists compression which increases friction between the outer layer and the club face. This is how spin is optimized. With the more rigid 4th layer in 2019, the feel is a little "clickier" but it allows for more spin than the prior generation.

More like a Molitor on a very cold day with the wind against. Don't hit it thin.

Last 5x ('17) I hit with driver was at 38 degrees in December. Centered it and it was off like a rocket and felt softer than some of the other current 90s. Don't know anything more on the new ones. Launch date is 2/15. Maybe someone here has an inside angle and has hit some?

Chances are both the new TP5s are really good balls. Lots of choices, which is nice. Top Flite XLs, first ball with a granite core.

My local course only carries Titleist and Pinnacle. The clubs they sell are sparse and only Titleist wedges and drivers with a few Scotty Cameron’s in stock.

I have $400 in script and there is nothing I want so I may end up buying some grips , hats, shoes but they carry Footjoy and I only wear Addidas as they fit my foot the most comfortable.

So yeah my local club is 100% in bed or bullied by Titleist.

Maybe I’ll just buy 8 dozen Yellow V1X when they hit and flip them on eBay.

Srixon 585 5-AW - Modus 105 Stiff

I have no way to put an actual figure on it, but in our business, it's a lot. I hear it time and time again from manufacturers that the two most influential factors in what the average golfer buys is what they see on TV (Tour usage, commercials during Tour events, etc), and local head pro/golf course staff recommendations and what they stock. And Titleist has been on this for decades now. Seeding PGA pros with golf balls, our (the industry's) proshop staff, etc. Basically if you stock Titleist to any decent level, you get free balls to play. And if a shop is stocked with predominantly one brand of golf balls (and this is magnified across the majority of green grass locations around the country), what brand of ball do you think will be lead the overall sales figures at the end of each year?

Other companies have been trying this approach over the past...10 years or so, but until fairly recently, no maker outside of Titleist had consistent model names to build that model around. That really helps in the general consumer's/average golfer's mind.
