Shaft Flex Driver

Recommended Posts

Trying to narrow down testing. Have any of you tested the same shaft in ladies, A and regular flexes? Can you post some results and let us know your child’s swing speed. I know some have had more success with regular even if their swing speed doesn’t match up to conventional thoughts on shaft flexes. My son (age 10) plays a ladies flex cut down and wondering if I should move him to senior (A flex) or even regular but do not want to cut down a bunch of shafts to do a testing (any club fitter will be difficult because the shafts they have will be too long - play him at 41”). I’ve seen some posts on YouTube that has regular flex launching higher than ladies flex, which doesn’t seem right to me. Obviously trying to maximize launch and low spin and wanted to get some thoughts. I know that conventional wisdom suggests that softer flex is supposed to launch higher and draw more and stiffer flexes have tighter dispersion and launch lower but I don’t think that’s always the case. My son seems to generate too much spin (usually little to no roll out, which is why I am thinking changing shafts may help). But I don’t want roll out at the expense of launch angle at this age. As a reference, his carry is 180ish (at DCP last summer he had two 17 point drives (220-230) and went OB on one, but that was from an elevated tee box). I would say he drives 180-200 depending on roll out and quality of the strike.

Any experiences are appreciated although I do understand that it depends on other factors (tempo, attack angle...).

Actually going to golf shop today to get new irons regripped, was going to have my son jump on their monitor to check swing speed. He currently plays a recoil es 440 F1 (ladies), but I have a few F2 (senior) at home and am having one cut down today to see how it compares. I suspect it is too early still, but he has been launching his drives higher lately...at the expense of distance, so interested to see effect. He is 8, I really have no clue but guess his swing speed is between 65-70. Will report back later this week once we have a chance compare.

He is 10. He has a 2017 M2 (10.5*) with ladies blue tensei shaft. I may be off on length of driver. It might be 39-40” (it’s been a year since I had it built) and I know he was choking down until this fall. I usually go close to us kids specs on iron length but 2” more on driver.

Irons are mizuno MP-5 with zelos 7 shafts in r2 flex (1* flat (which is 3* flat compared to other OEMs) cut +.5” to us kids length for 57 tour series. I have one time pull nippon 850s in regular which I’ll move him to once he reaches the 60” height (he’s 58” now). The irons are fine with the right height on all irons including a well struck 4 iron (although we barely use that due to consistency on strikes with that club). But height on irons are probably due to weaker lofts and a high launching shaft.

I just want to see if I can get a shaft with the right amount of spin on driver but like the launch angle on his current ladies blue tensei.

On another note - I plan on selling the zelos shafts (10 total) probably at the end of this summer. PM me if interested. Tip size is .355 which most mizuno irons use. Not sure if other OEMs have iron tip sizes of .355 or .370.

Also - since I’m talking equipment, try the tp5 ball. 80 compression and I think I’m sticking with it this season.

My son played a woman’s shaft in his driver till his swing speed hit around 88-90. Then went to regular. Stiff when he got to about 98. He’s bwtween 105-108 now.

Also I was told that woman’s flex is the same as senior.

There is definitely a difference between Women's flex and senior.

My 11 year old son is due for new clubs this year, and we're stuck between the two.

He needs women's flex, but most adult clubs go down only to senior, unless you go to SGI such as AP1s or M6s.

Womens shafts are not the same as senior.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Seek the advice of a trusted fitter.

I was told my son shouldn't hit a stiff by several folks. He was in a senior flex. The issue was he had to hold off the face to square it up.

Ask a fitter to take a look (once that I trust and has been fitting also 50 years)

He generates a lot of torque and the head was consistently at his right foot or behind while his hands were at contact.

Son took three swings and he switched to it a stiff.

Distance and club head speed has increased since switching.
