3 wood vs 4 wood

Also: 3/5 wood combo or 4/7?
I'm looking to possibly switch to a 4/7 wood combination. Just don't seem to hit the lower loft well off the deck. May go Sonartec NP-99. My only worry is dostance loss with a club that is two degrees weaker. Anyway, what are your thoughts on 3 woods versus 4 (15 degrees vs 17 degrees)? Also pros and cons of 4/7 combo over 3/5 combo?

With Sonartec you've got the benefit of going with 16* which is a good one to consider :)

I made the switch from a 15* Titleist 980f to a 16* Sonartec SS-07. Great switch. Even though it's only a degree higher in loft, the 4 wood goes much higher off the deck, it's straighter, and it's easier to hit. No regrets at all about the switch. I've actually picked up distance with the new combo and can actually stop hte ball on the green instead of watching it run off the back edge.

I don't have a seven wood, but I carry a 20* hybrid which fits perfectly between the 4 wood and 22* 3 iron.

I've gone from the 15* to the 17* several years ago, dropped the 5 wood 19* and went to the 7 wood 21*, and couldn't be happier. :)

The courses I play are not really tight, so I hardly use a 3 wood off the tee, plus I don't really have the game to reach par 5s in 2 with a 3 wood regularly so I have been using a 4 wood for years. I have a Titleist 904F 17* 4 wood right now, it works great off the deck and not much shorter than a 3 wood, something about the shorter shaft and higher loft makes it easier to find the sweet spot. My next club after that is a 22* Cleveland Halo, I experimented with a 7 wood but prefer the hybrid because it's easier out of the rough.

I had the Sonartec NP 99 17* 4 wood last year and that is a real solid club, one of the best IMO, I just prefer the traditional pear shape of the Titleist woods.

Good Luck.

I switched- 3 wood not a favorite off the deck. You better trust your driver because you'll need to hit it more off the tee but the 4 wood/7 wood combo is way more versatile for me

Currently playing 15 3w / 18 5w and would go to a 4w / 7w combo for sure in my next fairway wood setup. I don't use the 3 wood much at all so you could have that today. My tm 200 steel 5w is the tough one. I use this club for everything and will have a hard time letting it go when the time comes.

I really wish Callaway would bring back the 20 deg heavenwood. Then I'd go 16 3w/4w and 20 deg heavenwood.

IMO it's not about the number on the sole of the club, it's about getting the right setup for trajectory and distance. If this two can be achieve w/ 4 and 7 wood, nothing wong w/ that.

I use to have a callaway steel head 4 wood 16* that can hit like any 3 wood out there, maybe even better distance than most.

Until my uncle steal it from me! LOL! :)

I agree with Joe, the numbers are completely arbitrary. I promise there is a 3w out there that you cna hit off the deck. my Stlhd III has been the most consistent club in my bag since I bought it. The funny thing is I start to struggle with the club if I tee it up. I only hit it off the ground.

I currently carry a 5w, but am looking to replace it with a hybrid. To me the driver and 3w are distance clubs... it all about hitting it far with those 2 clubs. 3w is my par 5 in two club... you want a quick way to shave a couple of strokes off your rounds... try getting used to saying "two putt for birdie".

the 5w never really found a home in my bag. I don't feel like I can control distance with my woods. They either good far or not so far. I can't seem to dial them in like my irons. I;ve always been much more apt to trying to put a little more on a 3i than trying to get cute with a 5w.

One more in agreement with the numbers don't tell the whole story. I landed on a 16 degree Callaway 3 wood with a short shaft as my only fairway wood. I kill it off of the tee and the ground, and the hybrids 16 and 22 do the rest.

Find the club, call it what you want.
