higher loft driver

just plain bill

Recommended Posts

With the adjustable drivers I have, lofting up has been one disaster after another everytime its tried. The ball goes more up than out. I think I can hit a three wood off the tee better than a higher lofted driver because I can and do tee it lower. I play my drivers at 10.5 across the boards with all brands and still have no problem with elevation. Maybe it's a mental thing but I like 10.5, not 10 or 11.5. But everyone is different so my OCD about needing a 10.5 means nothing for others and that's cool. But on every hole possible, the club that will get me down it the farthest without a serious risk is coming out.

indeed! use what works for you! that's what i'm trying to determine, with a lot of experimenting. i know what the 16 will do. the 12 can get a bit off track when i try to give it some extra, which i always wind up doing with a driver at some point in the round. i've had some stunning results with the 9, but also serious trouble.

like you said, maybe the 10.5 deserves some more consideration, lol.

Please don't misunderstand me. If what you are using is working for you then keep at it. I was simply stating my struggles with more loft. I was in no way trying to get you to use something else.

"Please don't misunderstand me. If what you are using is working for you then keep at it. I was simply stating my struggles with more loft. I was in no way trying to get you to use something else.'

not at all! you were simply expressing what works for you, without a snide remark directed to me, or a holier than thou attitude. that's what's great (usually) about golfwrx.

a lot of factors are in play, especially off the tee. and every swing has differences, especially mine. it's flat out ugly. my struggles are with a lower loft, even back in the day. that's why i used a 12 back then. i just wanna stay safe as possible. a little trouble is ok, but stuck in trees or water or OB messes up a score, and i find that the risks and rewards kind of balance out during a round.

that 16 keeps me in the fairway, 200 off the tee. then it depends on my 2nd shot skills to get on the green, or close enough to get up and down. (3rd shot for 5's, of course)

my age and injuries have reduced my swing speed about 25mph to about 80. i have to rely on the short game to keep me in a round. and that's fine. i like what i like. i like playing despite the reduced power. as long as i have that 7 as the first number on my total, i will feel good about the world!

the article states that a very small population of golfers will not fit into these numbers. that would be pros, who have the 2nd and 3rd shots into the green and have the short game.

i should be a 16.

You just proved my point.

some of us just have incredible short games, i guess.

i assume you read the article. what didnt you like?

Just the chart. Those numbers are meaningless. Your a perfect example. Me too. I should be a 14 according to the chart.

I'm a 7. Distance doesn't have a huge bearing on handicap among amateurs.

resist temptation!

today i pulled the 9*, 15*fwy wd, and 7i...i just didnt want to be tempted to use those clubs cuz i might screw up a shot (a bunch of shots, actually)

we all take our biggest rips with the driver. with a lower loft, i hit too many wayward shots. even with the 12. off fwy shots dont always cost me, but way off the fwy results in extra swings, whether it's chipping out from trees, watching the ripples in the water, etc.

and as a round progresses, i find i swing harder with the driver as my bones warm up. the thing about the 16 is this: it lets me swing pretty darn hard, but keep it in the fway. far too often i'll get in trouble with a lower loft on the back 9, but the amazing thing about the 16, for me, is the sheer accuracy. i take a big cut, kinda, sorta, worrying/wondering where the ball might go, but there it is, right down the middle, or in the fwy, every time! and that's what i like, and that's what i need! and of course your game is different, and you prefer something else, but for me,. and perhaps for others, higher loft equals lower scores. 76 today made me very happy. did kinda slightly chunk 2 shots, but the ball did advance a bunch, just not on the green. and goofed once using the putter too far off the green when i should have used the pw, and goofed twice using the sw instead of the pw,

but what a feeling just to know i'm gonna be in the fwy off the tee. it makes playing this game a lot more pleasurable for me. your mileage...etc...lol

This whole thread would be better suited in the golf talk section, than equipment...

I would love to see this golf game, I can't see how someone who self admittedly struggles with a driver, mid irons, and hits a 31 deg hybrid from 100 yards is a single digit hcp golfer.... must play on short courses, otherwise how could you be so short of the tee, and not have 150 yard plus 2nd shots on par 4's?

Been using a ping k15 10.5 in an attempt to gain more ydg...something just wasnt happening at the rate I thought it could...put the rapture 12* in play yesterday and today...picked up 30 to 40yds (gps)...nice high draw...amazing! Let two guys use it yesterday and they crushed it (one guy had a g20 9*) for some reason I have always driven best with a 12... also, today, #9, 96 out...ball went in the hole! Thrilling! Anyway, it's nice to pick up the ydg off the tee after experimenting...put me in much better position on most holes...give it a try!

Nice work!

um, i actually used it from 94 out today, lol. put it on the green, a bit deep, and got my par. i love that club. if weather allows, will hit 100 balls at a practice range over the wkend. it just works! and from 150 out i use the 7hyb choked all the way to the bottom of the grip. 170 out i dont choke down. can work it left or right. if i can get close to a green i'm usually gonna get it close enough with the pw for a one putt. it's just old man golf, lol.

'Golf Talk'? thanks. i'll check it out. i'm certainly not trying to offend anyone. i enjoy talking golf.

I started out playing at 10.5, but moved to 11.5 a couple of years ago. It works pretty well for me, although I have been going back and forth again after some swing changes. I have tried 12 a few times, but it was a little too high. Right now, 11.5 is the sweet spot for me. Flatter trajectory is great, but seeing high bombs is great also.

Keep in mind Bill that This is WRX and 97.8% of readers here play on the mini tours and carry the ball 350. I’m not one of them. So this thread is for us Ave Joe’s.

You "usually" get it close enough for a one putt if you are "close" to a green? What do you mean by "usually" ? The best players in the world do it like 60% of the time.

You're not offending anyone, a lot of us disagree strongly with your approach despite it "working for you" (<- what does this even mean? You've never tried the other way, so how do you have any idea?). Short and straight with a good short game is a horrifically inefficient way to become good at golf.

You talk as if its easier to get a better-than-tour-level short game than straighten out a 10* driver.

i have played 2000+ rounds. when i was younger i played the 'power' game as best i could. i loved bombing the driver, and was rarely outdriven. but my weak areas were off the fwy and chipping. for some reason i could always putt really well. occasionally i could get in big trouble with the driver, usually involving a hook once i figured out how to draw. now that i'm 67, and coming off a serious shoulder injury, and a bad left hip, i've had to work especially hard to get 'good'. i play the same course 4 times a week, and i know all the nuances, etc of the course. so, yeah, i'm gonna be able to chip pretty dang close and one-putt a lot.

i recently played another course on consecutive mondays and really struggled with chipping and putting cuz the greens were incredibly fast, and i didnt know the nuances, and wound up shooting 80 & 81.

when i was a member at hillcrest in sun city (phoenix area) i would often play with guys who were 65+, and the better players, while not long off the tee, had incredible short games. one guy used his pw from 100yds in, including chipping, and always seemed to put it within 2-4ft. it was uncanny!

"You've never tried the other way, so how do you have any idea?). Short and straight with a good short game is a horrifically inefficient way to become good at golf." if i want to play a certain way, and it brings me enjoyment, what is that to you? why do you feel compelled to nitpick what i'm doing? i'm just thrilled to be playing at this point. and your statement is incorrect, and i've mentioned past efforts before and how i could play back then. but i find it amazing that you constantly contradict what i'm saying, except for the fact you, yourself, are bagging a 13* driver, which contradicts your entire premise.

play the way you see fit, pine. i'll play my way. what does it really matter in the long run?

i started this thread only to share some tips i picked up from personal experience. it looks like many have been helped, and a couple expressed it doesn't work for them. that's what it's all about. use what works for you.

the great thing about gwrx is it has been nothing like the old golf channel forum, which was the worst thing i've ever seen. while i really enjoy talking golf, i certainly dont need to be ridiculed for how i play it.

"The best players in the world do it like 60% of the time." the courses they are playing are quite different from the ones i'm playing. i got to play riviera once, a long time ago. i fired 100. i lost 3 balls that landed in the fwy, rolled into the super high rough, and couldnt be found. the greens were so glass-like that nearly every chip rolled out twice as far as normal. i did bomb my drive on #1 275 right down the middle, with 100 people watching from above, eating breakfast. that was about the only good shot i seemed to have all day, unfortunately. i did buy a hat after the round as a memento.

pine, please consider not following this thread. you don't like the content, so why bother yourself? that's the great thing about a forum. you dont like the content? don't follow the thread. i only follow 4 or 5. my favorite is the 320-page lpga fashion thread, lol.

have a great weekend.
