How great will Cameron Champ be?

Darth Putter

Recommended Posts

I want to see him play in a big event that is long with penal rough. Everybody seems to think long courses will suit him, but he is erratic with the driver. He hit some absolutely terrible drives at Kapalua and those are the easiest to hit fairways on tour. I know the Tour is a lot of bomb and gauge, but I’d like to see how he would’ve faired at a place like Shinnecock.

Cameron was an infant

When he saw Tiger's first win

96 Las Vegas Invitational I think it was

And from then he wanted to do the same

Got himself a driver

Used to swing it every night

Now he's on the tour himself

And everything's alright

Don't you know?

Cameron told his Mama,

"Hey, Mama, I'm goin' away,

Gonna hit the big time,

Gonna be a big star someday"

Mama came to the door

With a teardrop in her eye

Cameron said, "Don't cry Mama,

Smile and wave goodbye"

Don't you know?

Yeah...

Don't you know Cameron is a shooting star?

Don't you know?

Today is the first time I ever heard of him. Am I missing something what is special about him?

Simply that his CHS with driver is right around 130mph without him looking like he's swinging out of his shoes. Champ's SLOWEST recorded ball speed of the season so far of 190.52 is exactly equal to the HIGHEST recorded ballspeed by anyone else (Brandon Hagy). The first "big-name" long hitter who shows up on the list, Rory McIlroy, averages just shy of 181 ballspeed while Cameron Champ's average is 193.5--in a straight-up driving contest he'd be blowing it by Rory. He's the first player that's come along in a while that has the potential to truly overpower the rest of the field in a way that we probably haven't seen since Tiger first showed up. That said he's still very RAW and obviously it remains to be seen if he can capitalise on that potential in any meaningful way...

Nope, he’s new this year. Got his card on Web.com. I’d guess the Manufacturers will keep him afloat on PGA until he wins one.

Check your sources. He already won this season on the PGA and we will be seeing him for 2 years basically.

I thought you were going to say someone that won all the Amateurs etc. So basically he is another Hank Kuehne except Hank won the Amateurs. Already seen it. I'd pass.

I will only take notice when we have another Am win 2 or 3. Like Tiger / Jack and a major in their early 20's.

Cameron Champ featured group WMPO

I'd seen a bit of him before and I got piled on for saying people were getting too carried away based on his performance at Sandersons where the course had no "meaningful" rough and appeared to be easy by PGA Tour standards. I watched him closely in the featured group coverage yesterday and he didn't play much different except the rough at TPC Scottsdale was penal. Yesterday he was almost always able to advance the ball onto or around the green but not close to the flag. Sandersons he could basically still shoot at the flag from the rough. I said reserve judgement until we see him on tougher courses. My argument was does he have the control, strategy etc.?

Clearly he has a lot of talent and seems to have a good attitude/temperament but in my opinion the conclusions being drawn based on his length plus the early win were way over the top.

Good luck to him though, I hope he does well.

After watching him play all 18 I’m officially off the bandwagon for at least a year. I jumped on in Vegas after never hearing of the guy but after paying a little closer attention since than realize Champ is more of a project for now. Wishing him the best but he may be missing more cuts than making at least for the time being.

He'll have a major before Fowler will.

The only major Champ would have a shot at is the non-major major PGA Championship. Ricky still has a much better overall game, just not sure either ever wins a major, but if I had to choose Ricky is clearly the choice.

If his game matched the aura around his distance yes, but his wedge game says otherwise.

He may want to go dig his old driver out of the trash.

He changed this week to a new head, added an inch, and decided to tip his shaft less. Giant disaster so far. Can’t even sniff a fairway.

It always intrigues me when these guys make a change and it turns out so bad. Seems odd with all the fitting technology.

A little help here please.....I was just looking at a couple score cards I have sitting around here and am having trouble finding where to put the ball speed.

Augusta is a putter's course, which is why Jordan Spieth will probably win this year.
