Sergio disqualified from the Saudi tournament on the European tour

Here comes the Boom

I'm a Euro. And Sergio (The golfer) 'fan'.

Damaging 5 greens is no joke. And should be treated accordingly.

I suggest giving him until July off to think about it......

Something very fishy going on here. I might have bought this story involving a hothead 21-year old Sergio Garcia. But an almost 40-year old Sergio? Masters champion, newlywed, new father, new found peace and contentment Sergio? Raging on not one but multiple greens? No footage to speak of whatsoever? They may have gotten to all of you but they're not going to get me.

Holy s***, he damaged five greens? Complete meltdown, wow.

Wonder what “damaged” means.

Why is there not video of this?

It was on the front 9 with no TV cameras and there are only about 3 dozen people on the grounds watching the tournament and none of them thought to whip out their phone and to film it. Too bad. Would have been good theater.

What a joke of a tournament. I didn't know this was such a minor league event.

I am exaggerating about the number of spectators, but it is VERY thin.

There are only 200 registered golfers....IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY... and all of them are probably there.

Which is why it’s hard for me to understand how they get a return on the massive amounts of money they’re paying out in appearance fees.

Not so sure the Saudis are interested in an immediate return on this tournament. They are incredibly rich and the $5-10 million they gave for this tournament is way less than pocket change to them.

For them its just a few bucks spent to have a nice little golf outing. The sponsors and key figures get to have some nice dinners with the players. Plus Mariah Carey performed to round out the entertainment. I dont think they were looking for any actual return beyond some networking, the cache/prestige of some of the best golfers playing for them, and enjoying some nice parties.

It would appear that Sergio is dealing with personal struggles.

Sincerely,

Ferguson

If he is, that is a little odd. Won the Masters in 2017, has a fantastic wife, just had new baby he named Azalea, getting tons of money from Callaway, received a million for showing up this week, and played remarkably well in the Ryder Cup in Paris. He made the cut and was in 52nd position. He was playing pretty solidly in the fall. Maybe he just expects more out of himself or something else was going on and just was unhappy with his game, but he should be in a great place.

This is the problem with the pandering to well known players and the unbalanced Tour, by right Garcia should get a suspension that actually affects him on Tour but there are no events of note that he'd actually be taking part in/would miss. Can come back in July and all is forgiven. He's a big part of their marketing so they don't want to ban him from Rolex events when they're struggling for players as it is.

The European Tour is not in a spot to come down harshly on one their marquee players since too many are focusing on the PGA Tour lately. They freaked out when Rory said he wouldn't be playing their Tour until the fall. They gave Reed (who has never won a European Tour-only event) lifetime status. They changed the Ryder Cup qualifying rules to get Casey back in. And they pandered to Saudi Arabia to get a big tournament there.

Nothing will happen to Sergio other than his DQ today.

My thoughts exactly.

However, they could suspend him for a period of time during which they knew he wouldn't be playing anyway. That way they can act tough but not inconvenience Sergio.

If this had happened in the U.S., commentators would have just called him a fiery Spaniard and talked about how passionate he is. The tour would have imposed some sort of inconsequential fine and hidden it from the public.

Sergio is good, though. He constantly makes you think he’s finally grown up and then constantly disappoints.

I feel like we were robbed by this not happening in front of WMO crowds and a Johnny Miller send off. So much potential...

They’re trying to legitimize themselves on the world stage. “Please think of us as a country which hosts big sporting events and has cool architecture, not as a supporter of terrorism and government ordered slaughter. Thank you.” Seems it’s a long term strategy.

Not trying to insert politics here, but the answer to your question is political, not sporting.
