2019 Callaway Apex & Apex Pro Iron Pics

I saw Cally was giving 1.5x trade in for the old cf16 when getting the 2019 so pulled the trigger on the pros. One thing I after a week of hitting them is the transition from 7 iron to 8 iron is pretty noticble. The sound is more clicky and it feels extra soft on the 7 iron. I'm guessing this is due to the cup facing starting with the 7 iron. Not a bad thing but it's almost having a combo set without buying one. The 7 iron and below feel like my old regular Apex and the 8 and above feel like more traditional player forged irons.

We're fortunate to have the Tour van coming to our practice tee on Friday this week. I guess they've finished most of their work at Pebble by then; I'm not sure why else they've got that time for a visit. I will be ordering either a full set of Pros or, if it works out better, a combo set. The seven iron, though, falls right on the fence for me. I hope that Trackman will give me a definitive answer to that question. I hit a 7-iron (Recoil shaft) at Golf Mart the other day and was blown away by the sound and feel of the club....phenomenal. I was told by our rep that they'll have light heads available, which is a godsend for me. A new medication I'm on, on top of everything else) has given me weakness and numbness in my forearms and hands and I'm hoping to catch a break with this club.

I’ve had the standard 2019 Apex with the Tour Elevate shaft for two weeks now and yesterday I finally had some quality time with them on the grass range. Overall, they are perfect. Size, shape, forgiveness and most importantly very consistent.

Last year I played the Apex MB irons for the full year which thought me a lot about ball striking, but I just don’t have the time I hoped to practice so this year I wanted to make life easier on the golf course. I’ve always preferred Callaway irons, so I was real excited for this release. I played the CF16’s a few times over the years so I feel confident in comparing them to the 19’s.

The 19’s feel much better compared to the 16’s and in my opinion, look smaller while still being as forgiving. I strongly considered the combo set but my ocd wouldn’t let me have 2 different looking irons in the bag. It simply drives me nuts and if the badging was the same I probably would have done the combo. Looking back, I’m glad I didn’t go with the combo because I really like the standard Apex short irons more than I thought I would and the consistence in distance is right on point.

Lastly, the Elevate shaft must have been designed for me because I’m really impressed with how much higher my ball is flying without losing distance. That and they feel very smooth. In my opinion, the Elevate shaft feels like a modus shaft with a DG kick if that makes sense.

Yes, this is only after 1 round and a lengthy range session but I’ve put many sets of irons on the BST after shorter time than that.

These will be in the discussion for best irons of the year.

I received my mixed set today from Callaway. 4-7 is Apex, and 8-AW is Apex Pro. They look awesome. Both sets have the same silver matte finish, kind of a brushed look. Both sides of the set match in color and tone. Custom ordered mine with Nippon Pro Modus 3 120's. Weather look to be nice here this weekend, will play a couple of rounds.

Would love to hear some feedback on the combo set! Hows the gap between 7 and 8? Was the combo the right decision, or do you think the regular set was the way to go? Very interested in buying the combo set but would love to hear a little more feedback if possible. Thanks

Callaway makes two different heads? Why? Swingspeed?

Just got back from my first range session with the full set of Apex Pro 19s. Mind you, I was hitting off mats and had a swirling wind that would sometimes give 2 club help, other times hurt, the clubs felt fantastic.

When comparing the short irons (8-PW), they felt so similar to a MB or even my Vokeys it was unreal. Perhaps just a tad harder, but not much in it.

The longer irons just wanted to go. Hitting with fresh clubs off of mats I could easily see where the ball mark was. Hitting 1 or 2 grooves low on the mid and long irons, the ball just held its line and still got nice and high. Additionally, I could so easily flight any of them high or low. Hitting into the wind could put it back in the stance and hit my 4i a nice 210 stinger. Could put the 6 iron forward and launch it high and get it out to about 200 also.

All in all, very happy with the irons.

Do you mind sharing what the upcharge was for the Oban shafts?

Was so looking forward to the Apex iron .Very clicky coming off the face and terrible sound for a forged iron. Reading all these posts talking about great feel and distance. I expect the distance aspect, the lofts are jacked, but feel and sound for me are terrible.

Coming from PXG irons these will most definitely be clicky for sure.

I had them from prior clubs from a build at club champion. So this time, free. Last time, it’s like $70/club or something.

This is exactly why each club for feel and sound is so personal. I found these to be very soft, softer than anything else I demoed - Srixon, ap2, cb, 919 forg, etc. I ended up buying a set because of the feel and dispersion. I wasn't looking for distance, and only picked up about 3-4 yards, which could have been the weather conditions (outdoor fitting). The only club I would say is softer were the PXGs, but then it almost felt like feedback was diminished. For me, the pros had enough softness on mishits that I could tell where I missed it, but without punishing me too much. The other clubs I tested were more clicky off of mishits, something that made me hesitate and lose confidence over the ball.

I write all of this to hopefully have some people read that it was all so personal. Asking questions is a good start to your search for replacements, but should not influence your buying decision.

Which model did you end up purchasing, the Apex, or the Pro?

Has anyone actually seen the 8 iron through to wedge in the combo set?

I have heard they will be the same colour as the standard apex but are they exactly the same shape as the pro iron?

I think they are subtlety different. According to Callaway:

"the Apex Pro in irons 8-A is a result of all new tooling which adjusts the lofts and blends the leading edge for a seamless transition between the two models."

Here is the 8 iron on the combo set - i just received a set today 5-P

Where did you split the set? IOW, what model is your seven-iron?

Update on the Callaway Van showing up at our house this morning:

I had a Tour style fitting for a combo set of Apex/Pros then a tour of the van, which was awesome. Since, on their website, they show something like 60+ choices of Golf Pride grips alone, I asked my host if I could see what his grip drawers held that could give me an idea of what some of the lesser seen models they're offering (with the Callaway chevron as opposed to the Golf Pride logo) looked like. The first drawer he opened had some interesting styles and I said, "that one!". He pulls it out and I told him that it was that color scheme that I'd like. He replied, "sorry, those are Brandon Grace's special grips and are not available....BUT, he's switching to a darker green next week so, would you like some of these?". I replied, "sure, but how would I do that?". He said, "just hold out your hand....how many do you want?" Not wanting to appear greedy, I said that I'd love to have a few, to which he replied..."how about ten?"....HA! Anyway, it was a great cold windy rainy day at Olympic, just the way I love it, and today was an overall gem, and NOBODY was there to enjoy it but me it seemed. I think he's parking in our lot for a few days before heading down to Riviera, so they'll all have their chance to experience it if they happen to show up. Again, it was a great day, rain and all. The California coast is at its most beautiful on days like this IMO.

No, they had no smoke heads yet. Just photos in the catalog.

Loved the way the pro's felt. A touch more off set than I'd like to see but nothing crazy. I don't like bright chrome finish and the smoke won't be around for us lefties, so it'll be a tough buy. Definitely more forgiving than my Miura's but not miles softer... ball speed and carry about the same.

Really same BS? I hit the Apex Pro on TM and they are P790 fast. I have owned a lot of Miuras and I wouldn’t consider them long at all (not that it’s a bad thing).

This isn’t true. Smoke will be available in left handed.

I have grown so very tired of the manufacturers purposely confusing everyone with this constant abuse of the term “forged”. Pure marketing BS.

A forged body with a very thin, very springy, completely separate face welded to it, is not ever going to feel like an “old school” forged club that is hammered out of one solid piece of metal.

Call them “forged” if you want, but Apex, PXG, p790, p760, i500, etc, etc., do not feel or sound ANYTHING like a true traditional forged one piece club.

Unfortunately most golfers don’t know about the completely different construction and are constantly surprised by the sound and feel of these new imposters.
