Your Easiest to hit blades?

Stonewalled

Recommended Posts

I really liked the MP-33's (still play em once in a while) and the MP-5's. I can never hit a Titleist iron it's my kryptonite, no idea why. I also really really really like the Bridgestone J15MB but I don't know if those are really considered blades.

Bridgestone J15 MBs, had them for awhile and thought they were quite forgiving for that blade design. Even the long irons got up in the air quickly. I think part of it mostly is having the right shafts.

I've read that the Fourteen FH1000 play easy but I haven't tried them.

I have read the reviews on the 1000's from back in 2015?? or so. Always wanted a set but never had the pleasure. Love the satin look of those. I have some TC-910 CB's that feel fantastic, I would bet my right n-t that those 1000's are heavenly.

They're not. They're pretty dead feeling no matter the shaft. Aesthetically, one of the most beautiful, performance wise they were very underwhelming.

I would try a Maltby TS1 head paired with a reliable shaft. Has a fairly high MPF rating for an MB type iron.

Snow will melt soon Stone!

Though they look the part i wouldn't go as far as calling the TS1's a "blade" as they are a 3 pc polymer injected iron. Maybe more of a players distance iron...or I guess i just might be nit picking.

I'm currently testing the Callaway Apex MB vs. the Mizuno MP-4.

The first time I hit the Callaway Apex, I was a bit stunned. I was getting more height and distance from the Apex 7 iron than the Mizuno MP-18 MMC 6 iron I had just finished hitting (I had both up on GC Quad). Tested it a bunch more, and found I was hitting the Apex about the same distance as my 716 AP1s, but with much better feel. Easily the softest irons I've ever hit, and I think the small head is actually an asset.

I now own a set of 6-PW. I've hit them a bunch (high end simulator but not grass yet, as it's winter), and I'm finding that these play great--as expected, bad shots die short and straight, and good strikes are the softest I've ever felt.

The only problem is that I found a cheap and complete set of MP-4s online (3-PW). The full set is only $35 a head, and is cheaper than the Apex MB 6-PW. Topline on the MP-4s is better than the Apex Mb--it's wafer thin. The clubface is slightly longer, but the thin topline makes for a better looking iron, in my book. On feel, the two irons are very close--I'd put the Apex at 5% to 10% softer on the best of strikes, and a bit softer (no sting) on mishits. I can't judge sole/bounce/turf interaction as well, as I'm hitting in a simulator, but maybe folks who have owned either/both can comment on that front. The MP-4s are easy to launch on good strikes, as are the Apex. Neither will forgive a bad strike, but I find I'd rather not have a bad strike travel a long way if I can avoid it. On good strikes, having more mass in the center makes for much better feel and shots.

If I could marry the topline of the MP-4 to the blade size of the Apex, it would be perfection. But in terms of forgiveness--neither is that hard to hit well. Strikes out of the sweet spot are wonderful. Strikes off the toe are awful. Strikes in between lose about 10-20 yards, but tend to be pretty straight. And the more you practice with the clubs, the better you get at hitting out of the center, if only due to pavlovian feedback. :)

If money were no object, I'd keep both. As it is, I'm leaning towards the MP-4, as the $200 I'm saving on not having to finish the set can go to other things (maybe a new 3 wood, etc.).

I've hit other blades this year. The MP-18 is a little less soft on a good strike. The 718 MB is dense and clicky--not my taste. King MB was ok--next to the Apex MB, it paled in comparison. And the MP-69 feels a little worse than the MP-4 and has a bulkier topline and head.

If I were ranking the best players' irons I've hit this year, it would probably go 1) Apex MB; 2) MP-4; 3) Titleist 716 CB; 4) MP-69; 5) MP-18; 6) Taylormade P-760; 7) Miura MB-001 (a pure strike feels solid, rather than soft, despite the amazing topline); 8) Titleist 718 CB; 9) Cobra King MB; 10) Miura MC-501 (beautiful irons, but feel a little solid/dead out of the center), 11) Mizuno T-Zoid Pro (great irons, but they have real sting--these are my cheap spare set), 12) Mizuno JPX 900 Tour (look much better than they feel).

Assuming the MP-4 and Apex MB have equally good sole designs, I'd put those two at the top of my list of blades that are easy to get up in the air with a good move over the ball and whose soft feel will keep you up at night.

I've just switched from Miura MB001's to mc 501's. IMO the easiest to hit were my Cleveland TA1's ... however, a heavier club and I was nearly 20 yrs younger may be affecting how much I did like them. These came out in the fall of 99/ 2000 to retail and I believe at the time Vijay was playing them and probably part of the reason I went with Cleveland. I have heard he still works as hard on his game as he ever has -maybe something I should remember too!

These! I play them thru the 4 iron. Have a 3 iron head, but just prefer the off the tee performance of my UDI. Very playable.

Sweet set of MB2's rtaudt. I guy has to be very wary about playin a man for money when he's got a set of MB2's with some lead tape strategically placed in just the right spot. Well done.

I'm a lonely (locally anyway) blade lover and have gamed a huge bunch of different blades over the last 10 years although most were were vintage-ish, as in pre-2000. I'll summarize my personal findings like this:

Easiest to play/hit?

Ben Hogan Radials - second iteration/release from the late 80's. Not the prettiest blade but definitely the most forgiving for me. Huge amount of weight slung low in the head for maximum lift, easy wide sole, smooth Apex shafts, and ridiculously easy to hit long irons. Perfect for the first couple of weeks of the season.

My favorite blade design?

Hands down the Wilson Fg59. It's perfect. Close second? 1971-72 Staff Dynapower "Buttonback" with the Ultralite shafts. These should be called "Butter-backs". Lol!

My favorite looking iron?

Scratch SB-1, Fg59, Mp-33, Hogan Redline, Mac VFQ copper faced, Cleveland TA-1, Mac anything FC-4000 faced, blah blah blah... it never actually ends.

All my opinions of course but you asked for it! Ha!

Ps: While I've never personally tried them, I'd say that the one iron that I've noticed gains the most respect as the most foriving blade ever from all the articles, published tests, and personal anecdotal accounts I've ever read - is the Mizuno Mp-32. Definitely the most renowned "forgiving" blade ever. I will get around to trying them someday...

I don't know about the easiest blades but I sure know the hardest blades are MacGregor irons. They are beautiful irons and look almost identical to Mizunos. I can hit ok with Mizunos but not at all with MacGregors.

Just wanted to welcome your 1st Wrx post here! Couldn't help notice your bag sig. containing Honma clubs....I think it will start to permeate. See mine (since 2016 with those irons).

945's.. Going into the 4th year with these clubs and couldn't be more satisfied. 14 of 18 GIR's yesterday and they just instill confidence and perform....it's not a bad thing either when your playing partners sneak over and gauk over them in your bag after striking that 8 iron to 3 feet on a back right tucked pin on 17 to close the match:)

Anyone say 690MB? :)

I did!

What is the lowest calorie brand of fast food??? This whole thread makes me chuckle!!!!

easiest question that can go much pointless, most likely ending up with the answers on 'what i like the most'.

Everyone knows that. It s no different than a “What is the best shoe”, or “What bag is the best”. It’s all opinions, something to pass the time during the long winter. Never understood the need to post in a thread just to tell everyone else how pointless it is.

The MP 32 is flat out easy to hit but feels like butter. They are now my gamers. They are just perfect.

Anything with a lower CoG and some width and camber on the sole.

Many modern blades fit the bill but of the older ones I've hit I instantly thought of (as it seems many did) my beloved old Titleist 659mbs.....690mb are very similar too. Bonus that they are old but with conforming grooves and they sold by the bucket load (for blades anyway) so they are quite common on the second hand market meaning they are cheap too.

A left field option is Tad Moore's beautiful Dunlop blades. They have a pretty wide sole for a blade and look fantastic too.

Srixon models are way up towards the top for sure as were the nike VR blades, both varieties. The TM 2014 MB's were pretty easy to hit as well. That being said it's going to vary for everyone depending on how they look at address and how that sets up for someone's eye.

This is going back a ways so I might have these mixed up.

Titleist released the 690MB then the 690.MB. If I remember correctly they had a longer blade length and a lower muscle pad that made them super easy to hit....for a blade.

I know a few guys that play them and have sets stowed away they’re that good.

I had Z945's with a Z965 3 iron and got rid of them to go Z765. It's probably one of the biggest regrets I have right now. Don't get me wrong, Z765's are good but Z945's were way more consistent. I've had too many distance variances with the Z765. Now on to a question for all you guys. I have the Project X 6.5 in my Z765's and the Z965's I am going to get have the X100. Should I swap out the shafts? Or will the X100 increase the spin a bit and increase consistency.

I'm confused by the title: isn't blades and easy-to-hit an oxymoron?

Only if you believe that all blades play the same. Clearly some blades are easier to hit than others for most people - the trick is determining what makes them easier to hit for you

My understanding is that the 690.mb are just more upright and abit longer;

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/262722-titleist-690-vs-690mb/

The 690mb/690.mb have a longer blade length and lower muscle than the 680mb and are therefore easier to hit if that's what you are thinking of?
