Honma Experts - Is the new TW 747 Series Made in Japan or China/Taiwan?

Recommended Posts

I understand that after the 727 Series, Honma made the 737 series in Taiwan so the heads and shafts don't say Made in Japan, Sakata anymore. Where is the new 747 series made? Did they bring it back to Japan?

Can't seem to find that info anywhere. Thank you.

I see Tour Spec Golf just listed the new 2019 Honma products today in the “new” section (including the new utility iron and forged irons) The utility iron doesn’t have the description but the forged irons say “thanks to the meticulous crafting and high standards at Honma's Sakata Japan facility.”

And.....lots of great shaft options for the new 747v irons!

From the TSG Blog: The new 747 returns to being finished in Japan instead of China like the 737 series was. Sakata Studio does a 2 layer nickel & chrome plating + satin finish + gloss portions and a hand-painted silver finish in specific areas. No other OEM is doing this let alone doing it in Japan. Honma is returning to its roots and doing things right!

I was in Tokyo last November and I saw different model 737s that had Made in Sakata on the hosel.

I have also seen 737s locally (Philippines) that have nothing on the hosel. I asked one of them where he purchased them, he said in the USA.

Where did you see the 737s you were looking at?

I have the TW 737 Vn irons with Vizard shafts. The Vizard shafts are made at the Sakata factory (according to their video), but I've also heard the heads were made MIC and assembled in Japan. Let me check the hosels to see if they say made in Japan or not.

Does this mean that the blank heads are forged in China though? Not surprising and automatically bad if it is.

As a side note, let's see if honma is still glorious at tsg when they lose the account.

Hmmmm, yes the careful wording of them being 'finished' (not produced/forged/cast/made) in Japan is the giveaway.

check out this old thread at Tourspecgolf

http://forum.tourspe...ata-50-reasons/

read on past the first gushing post to lower down...

"Despite what I said earlier in this post I have been told that most products besides the shafts are now made in China/Vietnam etc..... but the finishing and completion of the product is done in Japan.

So what do I have to say about that? Its a bummer. 90% of their products say Made in Japan at Sakata Factory on the neck.

In my opinion its not ok to make a head in China and complete it in Japan then say Made in Japan. "

and this:-

well, what the hell does that gigantic factory in sakata make then?????

Finishing

they roll shafts

assembly

badges & paint work

polishing

packing and shipping

etc..

They never had a forging press and they no longer run the casting machines for head manufacturing. "

That's my 'bold' font above - never had a forging press, eh? hmmmmm.

It’s my understanding from the Honma European distributor that two versions of 737’s were made. For UK market they were made in Sakata, for US market made in China. I just saw the 747s in Japan last week and made in Sakata was on the hosel.

This is true. All the Honma 737 clubs in Japan will say Made in Sakata on their irons as well as their metal woods. I was surprised to come across some 737 metal woods that had it on the hosel. The other difference was the weight was dark and not chrome.

I am anxiously awaiting the 747 at our local shop because of the conforming list pics with duplicate models/versions without the Made in Sakata designation on the line of woods. Fingers crossed.

I just got the TW 747P irons here in the U.S.

There is no "Made In Japan Sakata" stamped on the hosel, only the serial number etched on the ferrule.

BUT, the removable bar code sticker that's on the shaft says "HONMA" "Made In Japan" :dntknw:

Also, the model number on the box and bar code sticker has "US" added to end of it. I guess designated for the US market.

Only thing that is permanently stamped "Made In Japan" is on the shaft under the NS PRO 950GH logo.

Maybe they don't stamp it on iron heads the way they do on woods. Not sure though. This is all new to me. The 727 Woods (driver, 5 wood and hybrid) I bought on Ebay have Made In Japan Sakata on both the heads and the shafts.
