Does interest in golf ever fade away?

Everything fades.

I started playing guitar when I was 13 which was 20 years ago. It was my obsession in high school, college and even after. I’m as good today as I’ve probably ever been. I can knock off the rust and be at top form within a couple days if I'm really into it. But you know what? I just don’t get as excited by it today because all the stuff the used to be new just isn't anymore. That’s the hard part. When you’re young and discovering stuff you just devour it. You can't wait to learn the next thing. 20 years later though you realize you don’t really have much else to learn…that you really want to anyway.

I still play but I find that I take more breaks from it now where I'll let my instruments sit. I won't even touch them for days, sometimes weeks. That just seems to be the way of the world. Granted, when you get older you don't just have one obsession. You look back over several hobbies and realize you're still a little into all of them so you bounce back and forth thus spending less actual time on each one.

I mean, don't worry about being happy. If you ever stop loving one thing it's usually because you've fallen in love with something else.

I've been playing for about 24 years now. Ya know how I can tell my interest hasn't faded yet? Because I live in NY, and we're forced to take a few months off every year for the weather. And during those months off I go nuts wishing I could get out and play golf.

In some ways the forced break is a good thing. I imagine it keeps me from burning out.

If you ever feel like your interest is fading away, I would invite you to come up north where this past week it was -50C with the Windchill. I am sure that will give you a swift kick in the butt to grab your sticks and go play.

These right here. I lived in Florida for 6 years and while it was great to play whenever I wanted throughout the year, it's almost a sense of, oh well if I can't play this weekend there's always next weekend. Which turned to, oh well there's always next month, much too often. Now that I'm in Minnesota, there's no time for that, if you don't make use of the short season, there's no playing for 5 months after that. The itch always hits hard right about now too.

I had a few years when my interest faded. Most of it was work related. Now that I've had a couple seasons in a row playing again I will never allow work to cut off golf ever again. I'd find a new job before that!

I played high school golf every year except my freshman year. An injury kept me from playing. By the end of high school I was a 4 handicap. My college path change dramatically and I ended up going to a community college where I played on that team for a year. During the season, I didn’t know it at the time, but tore two ligaments in my wrist. Golf was very painful and I was shooting mid 90s. It’s a miracle I was able to even swing a club in the shape I was in. After that, I wasn’t as serious for a while. Life happened. I was starting new careers, modifying cars, chasing girls... I’d still play every so often, but it was frustrating that I wasn’t the 4 handicap anymore. I also didn’t have many friends locally that played. In the last two years my cousin has gotten bite by the golf bug lol he’s always been like the brother I’ve never had so it was great to have a playing partner. I’ve played more in the last 2 years with a wife, kids, and a busy career simply because I’ve found the desire again. Now I have 3 little boys and I can’t wait to take them out to play. I had my oldest at the course before he was even two. He loves it. Now that I have them I don’t think I’ll let it fade away like I did no matter how poorly I play. It’ll become our thing and I’ll watch my boys chase the dreams of the game.

Its funny that I came across this. Yesterday we had 63* in southern NJ. My daughter's boyfriend asked me to play. $25 bucks all you could get in. A few things happened. 1. Every yahoo and and his mother was out and tee times were STACKED on each other. 2. We got paired up with 2 jokers (nice guys, but one guy screamed all the time). 3. The course was SOAKED... It was probably the 1st time in 30+ years of playing that I wanted to pack it in and really lost interest. We eventually did on 18 b/c of darkness but jeez what a day.

I will say that there are times that I could care less about playing and I cant play the way I once did and I wonder what will happen when I get to the point i go senior flex and move up tees and cant hit a drive 200 yds.

  • 2 weeks later...

My dad is about to turn 68 and he had been playing since he was about 5 or 6 and if he plays more than 5 rounds a year it's a surprise. He broke his wrist about 3 or 4 years ago, and after having the pins put in, he just doesn't have the same game he used to. Stopped playing cause he can't do the things on the course he was accustomed to and simply doesn't get as much enjoyment out of the game anymore.

Mine has as far as casual golf. Can't stand it. Unless its an amazing course. Still love to compete though. Basically don't practice either #facepalm.

I'm the opposite. I have no desire to play competitive golf anymore. I dont enjoy the grind of practicing all the time, and I'm not on the golf course to work. I'm there to enjoy myself, the company, and being outdoors.

For me it has as far as playing. I still practice some and constantly try new clubs and work on them as I enjoy doing it. But its a time factor and changing interest. Played college golf and now I can still hit it about as well but that is due to equipment. I feel with time my short game could get where I could still be a low single digit hc. But I don't want to spend the time to get there and I don't enjoy it when guys are beating me that in my eye aren't very good. Other thing is other interest. I have started welding and gotten into bow hunting. Both I really like and do not take as much time. Maybe when I retire things may change, but right now there is only so much you can do on a weekend and between making grand kids events and things needed around the house, its hard for me to justify 5 hours to play. But I still do enjoy going to the range for and hour or so.

My interest in golf has faded the last few years. I used to play probably around 100 rounds a year. Personal things came up and I'm just not able to play that much anymore. I don't think I even played 10 times last year. So far this year I've played twice, but I am playing a scramble tournament on Saturday. I have a way of taking all the fun out of my hobbies. When I can't perform to a certain level I just don't want to do it and I'm often unwilling or unable to put in the time to get me to that level of performance. I know it's a character flaw. Hopefully someday I can get over it and can just enjoy doing things.

I find that at age 66 my enthusiasm for the game has increased not faded.
