Recoil Shaft install problem

Hey everyone,

Installing a shaft for a friend who snapped his somehow. installing a recoil f5 110 wedge shaft in his 50* sm7. shaft is .355.

The website says no tip trip, so i sanded but i can maaaaaybe get the head halfway on. i can get the ferrule like half an inch on. never really had this problem before. doing him a favor but i might just drop it off at a local shop and make them deal with it.

has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution? I am tempted to try wd40 for the ferrule but i dont think that work. it is like the shaft is .365.

I have tried every other .355 shaft I have lying around the house and they all go in with ease.

Do you have a caliper to measure the OD? If it is close to .355, don't be afraid to sand some more off to make it fit.

Recoil taper tips fit just fine in Vokey wedges.

Make sure you've cleaned out all the debris/epoxy that's left in the hosel. Blast it with heat then clean it with a wire brush. It will definitely fit and don't sand the shaft any more than simple tip prep. Of course though you have to remove the paint from the tip to expose the unpainted raw shaft.

Make sure there's isn't a tip weight that has been left in the hosel either.

Finally, put the ferrule in a cup of hot/boiling water, leave it for a few seconds then slide it onto the shaft. Either use a ferrule installer or use the head to push the ferrule up the shaft.

also ensure the hosel is clean to the metal and all the way to the bottom. if so, as per the previous post, sand a bit more.

FYI - in addition to what other have suggested, keep in mind that Recoils have a lot of paint that has to be removed. You likely have just not prepped it enough.

The same thing will cause the ferrules to get sticky but the previously mentioned boiling water trick will work well (see TT2017's post)

As everyone else has said, sounds like you need to keep sanding down the tip. you should get to a point where the tip finish looks the same as the very butt end of the shaft (aka raw composite). Many times you will sand a shaft like that and get to a different color, say white, and think it's prepped. But these shafts have multiple coats in some cases you have to get through.

Yep. I’ve got 125 prototypes in all my wedges. They have quite a bit of paint on the tip. Multiple coats and that shiny ion finish.

You need to sand until you see the graphite.

I like the boiling water trick for a difficult ferrule but I usually just get It started and then hit it with a hair dryer on high for 20 or 30 seconds.

One more thing - definitely don't want o use the wd40 - it will contaminate the tip and interfere with epoxy bonding to the shaft unless you do some major cleaning and decontamination first.

Also, for any future reference - when you buy ferrules, pay attention to the actual inner diameter (ID) specs and don't just look to see if they are labeled as ".355 tapered" tip ferrules vs parallel tip ferrules. There are some tapered tip ferrules out there that have an actual ID of .355" (golfworks comes to mind) - which really is crazy IMO unless you want super tight ferrules. The tapered tip shafts are only .355" at the very tip. They are more like 0.370" at the top of the hosel and sometimes even keep increasing further up near the top of where the ferrule will be. I prefer ferrules that are closer to an ID of 0.360"-0.365". Sometimes the parallel tip ferrules on taper tip shafts is actually a better choice. But again, you need to look at the actual specs before choosing.
