  • Course Name: Elks Country Club (Donald Ross, ca. 1924)
  • City, State: McDermott, OH
  • Price Range: $40
  • Course Website: No webpage, but has a Facebook page
  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!): Really great shape for a out-of-the way course; fairly low key and "local"; Donald Ross course with great lines, mature trees, smallish greens. You can hit a lot of different shots and even though it is a little hilly, it is still quite walkable.

My hidden gem is Spooner Golf Club in northwest WI. A Northwoods classic, designed by Tommy Vardon, it's always in great shape, and a fun layout. A pure golf experience as there are just a handful of homes on the course and they are well set back.

The course is far too short for most WRXers (those who hit their drives 305 with a baby fade) but for mere mortals it's an enjoyable round and an easy walk. A course that one can score on but can bite you if you're not careful. $40 to walk on a summer weekend.

Certainly not a hidden gem, but Pine Needles in the Pinehurst area. So many folks get swept up in all that the actual Pinehurst with its multitude of courses have to offer, no one leaves the grounds. Pine needles is my fave of all the courses in that area with Tobacco Road a close 2nd and both are $50 and less if you make them part of a package in non peak months.

price: $39 weekday - $47 weekend

This is just a great little course in central Iowa that will challenge all aspects of your game. They have fresh smoked BBQ onsite and space tee times out 30 minutes apart. It is a great set up, and has 4 sets of men's tees from 5800 - 7000 yds.

Good call DoQ. Most folks head to Aiken for Palmetto or Sage Valley and completely ignore this little beauty in the centre of town.

Great call...tons of character on that course! Double greens, drivable par 4s, when I played it in 2010 or so they had only recently started putting yardages on sprinkler heads bc it wasn’t “traditional.”

Shennecossett Golf Course

Groton, CT

Price range: 30 - 50 (price well under 50 after noon)

www.shennygolf.com

Classic old Donald Ross course. he redesigned it in 1916. The only public Donald Ross course in CT. Usually in great condition. Hosts the CT senior open every July. Views of the Thames River and Long Island Sound on the back nine. Must play if you are in the Groton/New London area.

After June the fescue gets high so be prepared to lose 5 balls a round if you spray your driver.

Ohh, and the turtle shell green on the par 3 4th is ranked as the hardest par 3 in the state, and probably top 10 in New England.

... And it can kiss my Word not allowed.

I hate that hole soooo much. However, the course is legit. My buddy runs a St. Paddy’s Day parade tournament there. Great time.

  • Course Name: Sand Creek Station

  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!) This place is pure. Host of the 2014 US Pub Links Championship, and last years NJCAA Jayhawk conference championship. Played it a couple weeks ago for $28 bucks with a cart and 2 drink tickets. It is a big 7359 from the tips and the wind is always whipping. The 10th hole is with out a doubt the signature hole, a 640 yard par 5 with water left and OB right on the tee shot and the water right and OB left on any lay-up or approach. This hole is so cocky they give you a free tee shirt if you birdie it. (Doug Ghim eagled it in the 2014 US Pub Links final round) It includes many great architecture elements including a redan green on the par 5 4th. Not to mention how great of condition it was in when I played it as well. This place is a steal.

I've only played this course once and it was in the 50's on a rainy day in May. I loved playing it except for the gigantic tree that blocks the green on the long par 5 2nd hole. I was so pissed off about that tree which just makes the hole unfair. It really is a par 6 with that tree. You can't go under it and you can't go over it. Someone needs to go out there in the middle of night and cut that motherf@$ker down. The hole has plenty of challenges without that tree.

Boulder Creek

Streetsboro, Ohio (between Cleveland and Akron)

$39 M-Th, $43 F, $59 Sat/Sun before noon...$46 after noon

https://www.bouldercreekohio.com

Conditions are always top notch. Fluffy bunkers, thick-ish rough. Staff is super friendly. Good mix of long and short holes which is something I like. I'm not a huge fan of playing a course where every part 3 is over 200yds. This track mixes it up.

+1 This course was the only bright spot during my hellish 18 month exile to Ohio.

Used to play this course quite a bit when I was stationed at the Navy Submarine Base in Groton. It was awesome, but one thing that is not mentioned is that the ocean holes on the back nine are not part of the original design. They were added, I think in 1997 to make room for the expansion of a certain drug company’s offices (they make Viagra). So some of the original Ross design is gone. But a really fun track with tons of unique features, and absolutely devilish in the wind.

As the map description says, the courses are located by city only, since the OP didn't ask for a street address. But it should let you know if one of these courses is near where you are, or where you will be travelling.

I live in So Cal so courses that most would consider "trash" are well above $50 per round. The hidden gems around here are $75+ and they're not really hidden as they're usually packed. Los Verdes is the only one that I can think of that would be a good value, but that place is packed from sun up to sun down every day of the year.

have to go out to Palm Springs during the summer to be able to play on great courses for a decent value... in 115 degree heat lol

  • Price Range: $30 walk/$44 ride
  • Course Website: https://www.harrisonhills.com/
  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!):

The original nine holes were commissioned by the Harrison family (Harrison Steel), and designed by William B. Langford. Architecture geeks will surely know Langford. If you aren't familiar, this is a good read:

http://golfclubatlas...m-b-langford/

This particular track continues to inspire many of the great contemporary designers. The 15th hole is one of the most copied designs in golf. Taken as a whole, I believe the course is a 10/10. When Harrison Steel commissioned Tim Liddy to add another nine, the course became an 11! Elevation changes, superb use of native grasses as hazards, a variety of both open and tree lined fairways, and a beautiful layout that is quite walk-able if you choose... what's not to love?

I don't have any photos of my own, but here is one from the web. BTW - This is #10... my least favorite hole. Given that this is my lest favorite, one can only imagine what the 17 other holes must be like:

I found the newer holes at Harrison Hills to be rather meh. Terrain is flat, and the holes are straight as an arrow. A definite letdown from the original 9. 'Sill worth a visit, and a solid bargain.

I'm currently 1 year into my 3 year exile. Cleveland has some solid public courses.

Boulder Creek, Manikiki and Sleepy Hollow are all very good in the area.

To fit the hidden gem theme - Ellsworth Meadows, Brookledge, and Sugar Bush are great options. They are always in fantastic condition and under $50. Skyland Pines in Stark County just pumped in over $300k in improvements under new ownership with more planned. I've played it once, several years ago and haven't been back. Talk around NE Ohio is that it has been well spent and is worth the trip.

The best "hidden gems" NE Ohio has to offer are on the edges of the region. Aside from the 3 mentioned, Windmill Lakes (Kent State home track), Valley of the Eagles (complete reformation by Nicklaus Design on the property of a course that closed), Shale Creek (not a hidden gem, and pricey) are probably the best public options. Fowler's Mill is a Pete Dye and pricey. Played it once and the conditions are great but it's not one that I'm anxious to revisit. Little Mountain is a pricey option as well and conditions really fell a few years ago. Can't confirm but it sounds as if it may be rebounding.

Agreed. The original 9 is a lot of fun. Those long, flat holes are pretty boring. Last time I was there (2 yrs ago), the quality of the turf was pretty bad. Enough that I probably won't return on my next trip to Indiana.

The course if built out in the middle of nowhere between the Wisconsin and Illinois border. A lot of really good holes out there (one "mickey mouse" par 5). If you are ever in the Lake Geneva area and want to head out there its <25min drive and you can get away from the resort style courses. A lot of fun for sure. Be sure to sign up for their email club and check the website for coupons as they ALWAYS have some sort of promo going on.

  • Course Website: https://www.stonecanyongolfclub.com/
  • A brief description of why you think it's a hidden gem (and please include a photo if you have one!): Stone Canyon Golf Club is the only Greg Norman Signature Design Course in the Midwest. Stone Canyon opened for play in 2009 and received immediate recognition as one of the "Best New Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine. In 2012, Stone Canyon was once again recognized by Golf Magazine and named one of the Top 3 Best Public Courses in Missouri.
The layout at Stone Canyon will provide guests with a truly memorable golf challenge with Norman’s signature design traits that include closely mown green surrounds, creative bunkering and landscape accents. Guests will enjoy the rolling topography and dramatic long views towards downtown Kansas City to the west. The real star is the setting, where rock walls and stone outcroppings are integrated into the layout. Most memorable is the 381-yard, par-4 3rd hole, which concludes with a green in an amphitheater of rocks.

Best public course in the KC area. If they'd fix/update the bunkers it would be perfect. Tough track!

One for the bucket list

La Purisma

Lompoc CA

Rate 65.00

The course is next to the ocean near Santa Maria CA.

You play the front nine out East with the wind to your back.

The back nine is played west back to the club house in the teeth of the ocean breeze/wind.

When you get done playing 18, you feel like you have played 36 hole.

It is a great track, a former US Open qualifing course.

I onece played with a 60 year old hacker, he quit after 14 holes!

I also vote for Shenny - we make a few trips down a year...

I'm not sure if 9 holers count but I have a couple:

Fenwick Golf Course in Old Saybrook CT - Great course and Excellent views as it is on Long Island Sound

Hothkiss Golf Course -Lakeville Ct - Another great course extremely affordable and a beauty especially in the fall.
