Ocean City, weird question

Recommended Posts

Guys, I'm the golf coach at a school up in NJ and my players and I are trying to figure out a way to put together a spring training trip. It would be mid-April so weather around us can be iffy. Thinking that heading 5 hours south to Ocean City would get us a good chance at decent weather, but also not be crazy difficult from a travel perspective (I don't want to do planes :).

Here's where the weird question comes in. I don't want to set up the typical "buddies trip" where we play 36 every day at a different course. I'd really love to rent a house/condo a short golf cart ride away from a decent golf course with a killer practice facility, maybe a short par 3 course at a place where my players could play/practice to their hearts content. I almost want to find a place where we could become "members" for a week kind of thing. I already have an email in to Pam's, but thought maybe I could tap the collective knowledge of this group to see if there is something under the radar. I'm sure I could find an Air BnB and call all the courses down there to set something like this up, but I've never been to ocean city, so don't even know where to start.

I'm also not tied in any way to Ocean city, so if you know of someplace else that checks all my boxes and would be decent weather in mid april, lets hear it. Thanks in advance.

Is Myrtle Beach, SC doable?

It isn't out of the realm, but I was thinking that if we did Ocean City, we could leave in the AM, get there by lunch and get some golf in on the day we arrive and the day we leave get some golf in. Myrtle would be an all day's drive on both ends (airfare probably doubles our budget for this) and since realistically it would be a 4 night stay, that's giving up a decent % of golf.

Call Josh at Blue Water Golf Getaways: bluewatergolfpro.com His parent company owns a lot of properties around the area and can probably set you up with what you are looking for. Ask to see if he has anything near Glen Riddle :https://glenriddlegolf.com/. Its two distinct golf courses: One linksy, the other a more traditional wooded format with Jim Furyk's input. Huge grass Range, big chipping and putting area.

The only problem is you want to do mid April which is almost the height of package season so its going to be pricey and busy. If you were to head further south to Bay Creek in Cape Charles VA: https://www.baycreek.net/signature-courses/ they have a Palmer and Nicklaus layout, massive practice area, and a selection of houses to rent. You may find it cheaper and easier than OC for your purpose.

I'll keep that Bay Creek in mind, it's only about 1.5 hours further away and looks really nice. I wish we could go a little earlier, but I cannot do it any other time than our spring break. Unfortunately this year that means mid April. Years past it has been that first week just before our season starts. Now we are going to be about halfway through the season, but 4-5 days of nothing but golf would be great for my players to really fine tune their form.

Ocean City on average should be 4-5° warmer than NJ, with rain basically the same.

April is peak season for buddies trips in Ocean City, although Easter week will generally be slower.

I think you will have to get lodging and drive to whatever courses you play and practice at.

The Run Pointe condo (if big enough) and Glen Riddle Practice area are good ideas or just a hotel near Glen Riddle.

Baywood Greens has a good covered range and is a 20-30 minutes shorter drive, as long as you don't mind all play at one course.

Check with Pam’s Golf. They are the main provider of golf trips to Ocean City. They should be able to accommodate your needs.

Went to Bay Creek over the summer for a long weekend with seven other guys and we rented two houses on the property. It was really easy and a three minute drive to the clubhouse (where they kept our clubs for us). Nice grass range but I don't remember the practice area being anything extraordinary - I just remember it being good. Was great to be able to play each course more than once, as there are a few tricky spots. Staff were very accommodating too. I'd keep this place in mind as you sort through your options.

River Run had a bunch of houses and condos that could be rented. Its been quite a few years since I've played there so can't remember what the range and stuff was like, but proximity wise it's perfect.

It’s not ocean city but i would also look into Queenstown Harbor. They have 36 holes and the River course is one of the best in Maryland. They also give you access to a 3rd course not too far away if you stay on property. This includes cabins on site so you can literally roll out of bed and play. Practice facilities are great too as they have a couple of greens to practice putting and a chipping green with a practice bunker. One of the putting greens is pretty huge too. The staff is friendly and it’s never too crowded (especially during the week). Plus there’s an outlet mall across the street for kids to eat or shop. Bonus, you’re not very far from a bunch of great Maryland courses (on top of the 36 on site and access to 18 at South River).
