How many hours to become high level college player

Recommended Posts

There was a 497 par 4 at the us junior am this year. So he has no chance of a GIR. His scrambling must be better than anyone on PGA. He must average 20 putts a round. 240?!

Obviously you can’t comprehend someone nothitting it far but being able to shoot low scores. He holds the course record on a 7261 yard course here where he shot 61, and regularly shoots rounds in the low 60s. And guess what there are several almost 500 yard par 4s on that course. He shot the course record at the toughest course in Jacksonville in my opinion the first time he played it. He regularly shoots in the low 60s on 7,000+ yard courses and was one of the top college golfers in the country.

Btw the course where he made it to the finals of the US Pub Links was a 7680 yards par 71.

He beat Bryson, Xander, Zach Blair, and others who are now orhave played on Tour.

I can comprehend a shorter hitter playing well. But if that is the norm for him I'm asking what is lacking? He is 29 years old and time is running out. He is not making a good living on the local tour.

I hadn’t gotten to your post yet. He hasn’t played as well out of the country or on the Web.com tour. He was also just out of college and inexperienced the only year he played on the Web. What do you define as a good living? He’s making more than the average engineer playing golf for a living. He’s made at least $80,000 this year which is more than some guys playing in Web.com tour finals have made.

Professional golf is hard. You need a lot of luck along with a lot of skill. Here are his results from another tour this year. Could also post another tour where he’s also leading the money list.

Oh I agree with you how difficult professional golf is. When buddies trash talk a tour pro I will point out that there are 750 or so professional baseball players. And none of them are bad. Heck, there are 70 or so mlb all stars. And yet guys will say #60 on tour is not good because he hasn't won. It's just always interesting to me to see a player, I hesitate to use the word dominate, do very well and score well on smaller tours but not be able to carry that forward.

Golf is hard.

Simple answer, a lot.

I am currently a junior in high school that is a 4 handicap, and I can say, if my game stays this way, I will not be playing top level college golf. Until the past year, my work ethic was very low, and as a result showed little promise and progression. The turning point was when I played with the father of a recent #7 pick in the NFL draft, and he told me the importance of the mental side and practicing with a purpose. You could spend 10,000 hours pounding away mindlessly at range balls and get nowhere near the improvement that you can with 100 hours of meaningful practice.

Bottom line, it depends. Some more than others, but one thing is for sure, and doing nothing will not cut it.

Also, the difference between a 3.0 and a 4.0 GPA go a lot further than the difference between a 3 and 4 handicapper, at least for the high school golfer.

Malcolm Gladwell is a writer, not an academic. His 10000 hour idea is anecdotal, not a peer reviewed piece of research.

Were you replying to someone or did you just feel the need to share?

The whole "hour" meme came from a book written by Malcolm Gladwell: "Outliers". Read the title of the thread, that's why I posted this information.

As a junior player myself I disagree. I see a lot of guys who hit it no more than 275-280 win a lot and just have good iron games to hit 12-14 greens in a round and don't 3-putt a hell of a lot and make their good birdie chances a fair amount of the time. They grind out pars when they need to, have complete bunker games, bounce back from bogeys, etc. Playing around par is a learnable skill and one of my good friends shot 63 or something at the Maryland AM or Junior Am in front of the coach at a top 10 school driving the ball just under 300 yards and hitting greens and making 10 foot putts. Very few junior golf setups are 6900 yards and college coaches that aren't competing for national titles don't really care that much if you hit it 300 so long as you hit it 250+ and have room to grow. 200+ college coaches don't need you to be playing on Sunday at the US Junior Amateur just to give you a look. I played in one AJGA, played AWFUL, and still was able to elicit replies from some really good golf teams. Work hard and see what happens is my short answer.
