Growth Spurts and Loss of Distance

Recommended Posts

Raising my first golfer so this is all new to me. I'm curious if others have seen this with their kids. My son has grown a lot over the past 6 to 9 months. Meanwhile, he's hitting the ball substantially shorter than he did up until mid last year. I noticed changes with the kids as they went through such grown spurts in soccer back when we were involved in that. One season a kid would be a real speed demon hot shot. The next season he'd show up moving like a newborn giraffe. Swing mechanics are still there for my boy.

Usually what I see if shots go longer with growth spurts. It's hard to describe growth spurts so I will do my best on what I see with my girls in the simplest way I know how. What I generally see is somethings like this say they go 100 yards and all of sudden you start seeing the same club go 110. Then the next shot might be 100 again after a few weeks the 110 becomes norm. Not sure if this what you see.

If they are hitting shorter the ball must be going higher. Generally when I see distance loss it means stiffer shafts are needed. Another thought is perhaps they are not hitting the club quite so solid either. They may have to adjust grip or something else as well.

The first thing to check is whether or not his clubs still fit properly. Clubs that do not fit, can lead to distance draining errors. Is it the irons and woods? If it is just the irons, I would look into getting those checked out, (especially if the woods are standard length and he is hitting those fine). Also, the shafts can be too flexible causing mishits and maybe causing your son to not be as aggressive through the hitting area as he has the potential to be.

Having coached many HS golfers from MS until they graduate, I have seen this before and many times it comes down to equipment, and the other times it is that their swing has become longer and their timing and positions that use to work doesn't work when they go through a 4' or more growth spurt.

Having gone through a couple of growth spurts.

1. Check his golf clubs, that is most obvious one, the clubs are either short or flex is off.

2. Growth spurts impact mechanics. It take a while for the kids to adjust; ball striking, spin, all gets impacted. You might think swing mechanics are fine but I still it checked.

3. Ar you taking about carry or total distance? It could be that carry is more but roll out is less; thus you feel total distance has dropped.

Last spring/summer we went through a torrid time with growth spurts and ball striking.. when we finally sorted he got way longer in distance.

Didn't you say your son hits driver 300? Where is he at now?

If you hit it 300 bills once does that mean you are always 300 bills long?

on GolfWRX it does. I hit a driver 400 once so thats my average now because I quit after that

New math. love it.

We don't talk about driver distance in the youth golf forum. No numbers, anyway. Relatively, he's not hitting the ball as long as he was a year ago and several inches shorter in height. His gear is good and has been adjusted/replaced by a pro fitter as he's grown. It's the indian and not the arrow in this case. Thanks all for the input. This might be one of the many mysteries of puberty...haha....

It may be an adjustment period related to swingweight.

It sounds like 1" in extra length to a club is insignificant. It's not. 1" added length adds 6 swingweight points.

To put this in perspective...6 swingweight points equates to 6" of high density lead tape added to the head of a club. Normal humans can't feel the difference in 1 swingweight point. Most can feel the difference in 2 swingweight points. Almost all can feel the difference in 3 swingweight points.

If you want to try a fun experiment, take 6 1" pieces of high-density lead tape and at it to your driver. I promise you it will feel like a sledgehammer...and if you're used to swinging driver at D2...you'll struggle with the Driver at D8 - D9.
