How Long Until You Put New Irons In Play?

How long after getting new irons do you wait until you put them in play?

My new irons are 1/4" shorter than my previous, different shafts and heads. Taken them to the range a couple weeks now; it could be psychological but my swing feels different between the two sets and although I'm hitting them well, there's something familiar with my old set that gives me a little bit more confidence.

This is the first time I've changed irons.

Almost immediately - no sense in delaying it as I've already forked out the cash, and have to justify it to my SWMBO that it was a good purchase LOL. However, it does take me a couple of rounds to find out how it fits in terms of yardages etc. I very rarely see a good correlation from the range to the course as our ranges here are only mats. But wedges are a different story - takes me a few sessions around the practice greens before I feel confident enough to try them on the course.

I’ve only had new irons thrice. In two cases, the next day, because the range was closed for Christmas the day I got them. With the most recent acquisition, the old irons went into the box the new ones came out of as soon as I opened it. Each of those new clubs were a significant upgrade from the old, so I wanted them in play quickly.

Straight away. No point buying them if you're not going to use them.

I think the WRXer answer is "when it's their turn...."?

I've got 7 or 8 iron sets that have yet to see course time. One of those I've had for over a year.... :pimp:

Yeah, I got to many sets of those as well. Acquired, and never have sniffed a golf course. But they are exclusively of the "classical" variety. Acquire, fancy 'em up, look at them. Then they fall prey to the "Two Year Rule". If not played in that time, they are liquidated. On to the next.

But don't think that was what the OP was getting at. "New irons" (which occurs quite infrequently) are put into play immediately. Full speed ahead. Out with the old, in with the new. Moving on. No looking back. They have to be better, I made the decision to switch. Confirmation bias.

Hope I didn't make a mistake by selling off the old set to hastily.

Straight to the course. Sometimes they get a range session.

I've removed the plastic wrap from heads in the parking lot and/or on the course before.

New new? New New irons get put in play without delay. I like your 2-year-rule. I need to implement it...

I'm not spending money on new clubs and not play them immediately.

new club anxiety is a real thing. however 1/4 inch shorter and the feel is different. What did ya get PING's ?

Went from P790's w/DG 105'S to Mizuno 919 Tours w/Nippon NSM T120.

The Mizzy's are oh so soft and the shafts so smooth but about a club shorter than the P790's.

1 range session and then to the course.

Tournament play may require a bit more time, but fun golf, they’re out right away.

Like any other new club I get, if they don't make the bag after three swings, they never make the bag. Either they feel right immediately, or there's something about them that will make me subconsciously compensate to adjust to them.

To be clear, this is just to make the bag for regular play. They won't make the bag for a tournament until I've had a chance to play a few rounds with them so that I can try them in various lies, hit various shots with them, etc.

I have some putters like that but no iron sets. I've found I'm equally mediocre with all of them.

Same here! I don't buy irons looking for improvement, I buy them just try something different.

My last few sets new sets have been internet purchases that I didn't really get a chance to "demo" extensively before hand (more like I just got an itch to try something new and searched out a good deal online).

I play my irons about 1" over and 2* flat from "standard", and prefer my grips built up a little on the lower hand, so there usually is always going to need to be some club-work done. That said, I usually take a new set and do some range work and try to get in a few rounds with them "as is" just to make sure the look/feel/grind of the heads are going to work for me before I go to the trouble and expense of extending (or possibly re-shafting altogether) and re-gripping. If testing doesn't go well I'll just move them along and stick with old set. If testing goes OK, then I'll start tweaking to get them to my specs.

So to answer OP, I'll definitely put them in play right away, but that will likely not end up being the final version - just an extended demo before I start tweaking.

I’ve carreid irons on the course with plastic wrap still on them. When I finally had a need for that iron, that’s when the plastic came off. Only once though as I’ve only bought truely brand new irons once or twice.

Typically with a “new to me set” I try to get out for at least nine holes by myself. I hate to put untried clubs the bag when we’re playing for something.
