Why is this becoming an addiction??

I think there are 2 types of people that buy a lot of putters:

 

1. Collectors who like unique nice things (rare, old, valuable, beautiful, etc)

2. Those looking to buy a better putting game. These people have the notion that putting is an easy skill to master, unlike hitting a drive 320+ yards & hitting 65% of fairways. They are still searching for the one putter that is automatic.

I think the attraction is simply the great variety in design, elegance and raw beauty available in the vast number of putter choices there are out there.... it just makes you want to buy them... lol

To add on that though I think it’s a very hard thing to “fit”. I have had fittings from good places and the problem is that it’s not like picking a driver and a head. If I don’t like the look or feel of about it plays a part. Very first putter I got fit told me I should use a mallet style...only problem is I miss those like crazy on shorter puts so while it might be slightly better on lag puts i am better overall with a blade....

I feel the same way. 15-20 footers a mallet feels good but 10 and in i just can’t feek comfortable with it for some reason.

I have some tables that were done up in Michael's Cherry, I think it is an amazing stain and worth a look if you have not seen it!

I'm with Egobblewobble on this on being a lefty. We don't have many options when we go into a store other than a select few. I've gotten to the point I'm putting right handed in store just to get a feel for certain putters.

 

Also being up in Canada putter selection is mostly just the big name brands along with a few smaller putter makers such as Bobby Grace that only fitters carry. So when I see something different I snatch it up just to try and then let it go if I don't like it.

I started off with one custom Byron that was going to be the last putter I was ever going to buy...4 years later have have a stack of about 30 putters in my garage and the collection has probably seen about 50-60 putters move through it. I'm sick in the head.

 

I love putters because old or new, they can last you forever. I prefer and answer or blade style head and, without starting a debate, there's not a ton of revolutionary technology in that style. They are timeless design that can be played forever. A 10-20 year old anser style head is still a good putter, but a 10-20 year old driver is completely useless (although I do like taking a persimmon driver out every now and then). I'm actually starting to get into classic blade shaped irons for a very similar reason as putters.

 

Putters can also be played with around the house. I replaced the grass in my backyard with a putting green and can grab a stick out of the garage and head out back to play around whenever I want. It's not as much fun to hit irons or drivers into a net. Whether is a backyard green, an indoor mat or even carpet rolling balls into a plastic cup, putters can be "played" with easily.

 

My advice would be to buckle up and figure out what you really like to see or want to try in a putter and then be patient in tracking down what you're aiming for. You can easily swap in and out of used stick if you take care of them and it'll only cost you a few bucks for shipping maybe. If you impulse buy the first thing you see or buy brand new putters, the habit can get expensive very quickly.
