Fitness training for juniors

Recommended Posts

I was riding around in my truck yesterday listening to the PGA tour radio station and a man was on the radio talking about clubhead speed and how to increase it. The information that he put forward was very enlightening and the hosts of the show were equally impressed. When they gave out the guy's website info, so many people went to it that the site temporarily crashed. They eventually got it back up and running and you can check it out now. The guys name was Chris Finn and he runs a site called Par4successgolf. His company has done tons of research on clubhead speed and how to increase it. He is based out of North Carolina but you can call him and his company will develop a customized fitness plan for your junior golfer. I spoke with him on the phone for about 20 minutes and was very impressed with the information that he gave me. One thing that stuck out is that he said there is a direct correlation with a kids weight and their clubhead speed. Meaning that the heavier kids will generate more clubhead speed. He gave me some specific ideas on what exercises to concentrate on for my daughter. If you are looking at fitness training for your child, you should check this guys site out. He also has some really good articles on junior golf that some of you will be interested in.

Is there a podcast of his talk/appearance on PGA Tour Radio?

I'm pretty sure you can find everything you want on their YT channel: Par4Success

Winter Speed Workshop Video - Interesting that they tested Superspeed programs in 4 different variations....1.) Light Stick Only, 2.) Medium Only, 3.) Heavy Only, 4.) All Weights........that Light only and Heavy only groups actually lost speed, All Weights had some gain, but medium only had the largest gains.

Also, looking through there website these guys are not new on the scene. Looks like they have been around since 2007 and have a pretty impressive resume of players making it to good College programs. The lasting longevity of the program is a good sign.

I worked with Chris for a few months a year or two ago. He knows his stuff and the app he provided was easy to use and intuitive. I would recommend him and the guys at Premier Fitness Systems in Scottsdale, AZ. They work with Scott Stallings, Kevin Streelman, Ryan O'Toole, and many more.

That's interesting. Thanks for sharing.

When we're on the range and my son asks how he can hit it further I say, "eat more", and everybody laughs...

110 mph club head speed and pokes it 3 bills and wants to hit it longer?

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Why not try for 130 and 4 bills. Better Never Stops

Yeah... but at the age of 13 you really can't expect much more than that. He is already amazingly long for that age. Probably one of the longest players in the country at that age.

I notice in these guys are using SuperSpeed Golf (SSG) sticks in the YouTube training videos.

I go through the SSG Protocols throughout the year...and they work very...very...well. I chronicled my progress over in the huge SSG thread.

Wondering if any of you have used the (8-11 YO) SSG sticks...and did they work?

We use them, I created my own protocol for my daughter. She gained speed but is it because of the sticks? Growth? hard to really say. We started them in june/july and she is up about 6-8 mph in driver swing speed.

It's a combination of everything also don't rule out a change in the swing for the better. The thing I like about SSG or similar methods is they learn to feel what is fast.

We use SSG because well quite frankly since every else is using it and I felt like my home made version from old shafts was not correct in weight and in the grand scheme of things it was not a huge purchase. .

All in all we do personal fitness and after all is said and done the biggest increase in swing speed was working with a swing coach to optimize speed. We gained between 10-15mph on that alone.

The fitness part is really about overall fitness health. If you just work on speed it will cause problems and injuries. Because of this I really think finding a local fitness trainer is the best option because they oversee and work on what is needed. If you can't find someone who specializes in golf nearby I would look for someone who does baseball players or other sports but whoever you work with make sure they work with kids.
