Reverse K at Setup?

Does anyone play with a reverse k or spine tilt at address with irons? I am trying to improve my iron play and ballsriking and have read a bit about using a hip bump to target/reverse k setup position at address but have not been able to try it yet as I live in MA and it is freezing out. I play off 5 hc if it matters but really looking to improve iron consistency and contact.

I have taken some practice swings in the living room and the takeaway feels much more natural but not sure how it will work out on the course.

All the tilt you need is provided since your trail arm is lower on the club. No need to bump the hips forward.

Stand in your stance with hands hanging evenly. Grab the grip with left hand.

Now for the right. It has to go on the grip lower than the left. Its impossible to do this without tilting away from the target or dropping your right shoulder or closing your shoulders so they point left. The first of these three is basically reverse K. Push that handle toward the target more and tilt away more for more extreme reverse K.

Pushing the handle toward target in setup promotes a closed face at impact.

Tilting your spine away from the target TENDS to move the low point of your swing back in your stance. Youll have trouble hitting down on the ball if you tilt away more than usual and you dont move the ball back in your stance.

Ball back. Grip forward. Tilt away. This is reverse K. This can certainly help a lot of ppls iron game.

Many years ago I had success doing this and probably hit the ball as good as ever. I think the tip was setting up like your left side was against a wall.

why did you get away from this?

I didn’t it was just one of those things where you think you “feel” the same things but the results aren’t there.

Too much revers "k" and it will restrict your backswing a lot, unless you tilt it forward, which just leads to more things that can go wrong in your swing.

Most players don't develop the spine back tilt until late in the downswing. That's just how the swing works.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

Yea I am not looking for a ton of spine tilt at address but I did find that my ball striking improved significantly when I use about the same about as Tiger in the above photo at address. Seems to help my backswing feel more natural without sway. I have noticed in the past when I am hitting it poorly I struggle with a bit of a reverse c at the top of my swing, a small bump forward at address with spine tilt seems to really help prevent that, feels like all I have to do is turn.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just returned from a golf trip to Orlando where we played 4 1/2 rounds and hit the ball really well. I used a small amount of reverse K at setup...about 1-2 inches toward target and found that my ballstriking greatly improved. Also the trajectory and shot shape was much improved as well. My typical miss is an over the top rope hook and I found that with the reverse k setup my club patch was more to the inside and resulted in a dead straight or tight draw ball flight, I really didn’t miss left at all so I was happy with this this small change at setup, it seemed to really make a difference. I am going to continue to work on it this season and am encouraged by the results.
