Deciding between S and X when you can't hit every flex variety...

OK, so I've done a fitting, and I know what driver head and 3w head I'm going with. I need to choose which of two shafts (Graphite Desing AD IZ and HZRDUS Smoke) to go with, however I've not hit every combination of flexes, as the shop did not have all the versions.

I'm going to be ordering soon, and likely won't get a chance to get on a monitor before I dive in. Quick snapshot of my swing and numbers... Handicap ranges from 10-12 these days, SS around 105-107, I miss way left or a spinny, chicken wing'd push slice. Been mainly in a stiff flex Rogue I/O 60 in a regular Epic, and do OK with it. I'd like to have a touch higher launch than what it gets me. Have never owned an X flex, but have hit some with varying degrees of success.

OK, so I've hit and been happy with the numbers with each of these, but there are missing variables...

Driver:

IZ in 6X but not 6S

Smoke in S but not X

3W:

Have not hit an IZ

Smoke in S but not X

My safest bet is going with the Stiff Smoke in both Driver and 3w (because I've real-life hit them!), however I really loved the IZ. Felt great, looked great, and totally took left out of play, which I loved. Going to X flex (in either) could really be a drag when I'm not swinging well, or silly enough to play in this cold midwest winter. I'm going to want to go with matching for whatever I choose IZ/IZ or Smoke/Smoke, but my risk is if I go with an X that I won't like it.

Thoughts?

(I also hit the AD DI and AD TP and thought they were great too, but not sure I can jump in on either without more testing...

Hard to say since shafts are all feel to any one individual.

I'm about 10 mph slower than you and always feel like I am between R and S. I usually prefer the softer shaft for some of the reasons you mention (also feel like I need to swing harder with the S which rarely works over extended periods of time).

You could also get the Smoke S tipped a bit to make them play a bit stiffer. Of course, with anything shafts you may or may not like it.

That's a really good point. I've not really needed to overswing in the AD IZ x-flex, but I don't want to have to. I like your idea about tipping - I could very likely to with either in a Stiff, and tip a little to stiffen them up...

Rule of thumb: of you are not absolutely, positively sure that X-flex is what you need on your average day, go with S-flex!

I’d go with x at your swing speed. For me I like to know that I can step on it if I have to and not lose control. Also x today prob plays softer than years ago when a lot of clubs were bore thruough. And graphite design will definetly play softer to flex than the HZRDUS if you go that route. Also keep in mind the x flex will be a few grams heavier than the stiff if that plays a factor for you. If I were you I’d go untipped in the driver and half inch in the 3 wood since standard tipping is usually 1/2 inch and inch
