Rustic Canyon this afternoon. I must say this is quite a unique layout. Similar to Angeles National, it routes through a valley. That's where the similarities end. The course is basically a links layout. It has an extremely natural look. Groomed it is not. The greens are humongous. I don't think I've ever seen greens this big. Heck, there are sprinkler heads in the middle of most of them. While the greens are not crazy, they have some serious undulations. A GIR is only half the battle. The front is fairly flat. The back has a modest elevation change on 16 and 17. There were a good mix of long and short holes. It rained for most of the back nine, so the long holes played really long. The short holes had more challenging greens, so birdies were hard to come by. The holes were fairly straightforward for the most part. What you saw is what you got.

Conditions were decent. It was once again cart path only. The greens were rolling fine, but slowed as the rain accumulated.

Given the generous fairways it's no surprise I hit 12 of them. Greens were also gettable. Unfortunately the three putts came in buckets. I don't recall ever having so many putts over 60 feet. Lol. I limped home in a heavy rain with an 82.

I'm definitely giving this one a solid recommendation. If you like your golf natural, this is the place.

Rustic's greens can be devious and I wouldn't want it any other way. One thing to note is the greens aren't quite as big as you think. The sprinkler heads (and white spray painted dots) ring the greens and are surrounded by large closely mown areas which are not green. Makes it tough from the fairways since it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

I figured the closely mown areas weren't greens. However, I don't recall seeing the white dots. They had a competition just before I played. Is it possible they treated the entire area as a green for the tournament?

awesome pics and sorry you didn't get better weather. this is the most rain we've seen in a few years. that forced carry on 18 at TN has to be over 200yds? I've never played those tee's.

Thanks. I was in the area two years ago, and it was also quite wet. The carry from the 18th's tips is 220 at least. One of my playing partners says he hit his best drive of the day, and barely cleared the junk. It was playing into a 15 mph headwind, though.

Jan and Feb are definitely the wettest months here. Once March hits we literally wont get rain again for 9 months. 220 in a 15mph headwind. So more like a 240-250 carry? That's just rude. :) The sad part of TN is it has the bones to be good (views, conditioning and some of the greens are excellent). It's a fun resort style course but to play it 3-4x a month get's boring and if you aren't driving it dead straight it just flat out stinks. And it's egregiously over priced.

Safe travels and look forward to your next trip report.

No doubt TN is overpriced. I think I averaged less than $100 a round for the other courses on the trip. I paid $230 at TN, as the 9:30 am - 1:00 pm slots are discounted from the peak rates.

Good reports. I played RC last weekend for the 2nd & 3rd time. Did you have any favorite holes? I’m a big minimalism fan. I thought the greens had so much interest. 6 is one of the best greens I’ve ever seen. The sprinkler heads is where the green ends. They cut the surrounds the same height which I love b/c of it gives the players options. They held a tourney there last Wednesday. I think they usually have some spray paint or a red dot where the green ends (just spots not big lines). Including the surrounds the greens are def huge but still not as big as old Mac.

You were here not only in a very wet Feb, but also a very cold (for us) Feb. The one course I would have also suggested to those you played would be Industry Hills. I have played most you played... Rustic is my fav, and right now, with everything green, it's a treat. I really like its rugged look and the sense that there's no structures anywhere to be seen. I'm playing there tomorrow...

Yeah, #6 is fun. The par 3 8th has a tough green, which is not unexpected for such a short hole. The 14th is a tough driving hole. My only beef with the course is than many of the holes tend to blend together. I'd like to see a few more fairway bunkers.

You're right, Old Mac has massive greens.

OK, time to wrap up. It was a fun trip, even with the mediocre weather. Wet and cool still beats the cold of Chicago. I really got a laugh out of the kvetching going on at the Genesis Open. Seriously? I was standing on the 1st tee at Oak Quarry at 6:00 am waiting for the sun to come up. It was a beautiful morning with temps in the low 50's, and practically no wind. Light jacket weather, and it was off by the 10th hole.

In hindsight I should have planned to stay in one general area. Eighty miles of driving in the Midwest is no big deal, but 3 hours of bumper-to-bumper LA traffic sucks. I've been to the city numerous times, but I still can't wrap my head around the size of the area. I played with several local golfers on this trip, and I was surprised than most of them hadn't played the courses on my agenda. Now I understand it somewhat. If you live in Irvine, are you really going to make the 2.5 hour, 110 mile trek to Ventura on a regular basis?

Here are my course rankings. Given the amount of rain that's fallen in recent weeks, I'm going to give a general pass on conditioning. Cart path only sucked, but other than Buenaventura, things were playable for the most part.

1) Oak Quarry: Again, I'm a sucker for elevation changes. A few snoozer holes, but otherwise it's eye candy. Gettable par 5's. A few tough par 3's. Highly recommended.

2) Rustic Canyon: A little more variety would be nice, but if you like "natural" courses, this one is excellent. Fairly easy off the tee with generous fairways, but the large "greens" really test your short game. Putt? Chip? Pitch? Choices, choices, choices.

3) Trump National: Yes, it's overpriced at the peak rate of $300. However, one can tee it up for $80 at 2 pm midweek, or $125 for a 1:40 pm slot. I bet the sunset is pretty cool. I would say it's not a course that I would play on a regular basis, but it's certainly worth playing once, or once a year.

4) Black Gold: 'Really liked the elevation changes, but too many holes simply lacked character. That said, it's still a tough course, and once you get past the initial visual appeal, it's probably a solid course for regular play. I don't recall having too many perfectly flat lies, so one had better be comfortable playing on sloped terrain.

5) Angeles National: A bit disappointed with the pancake flat terrain, minus a few mounds. Bunkering was very good. 'Loved the green complexes.

6) Olivas Links: Another fun "natural" course. 'Not quite as appealing as Rustic Canyon. The greens are ho-hum.

7) Buenaventura: Oy. The highlight was that it was open.

... Next time you play Rustic Canyon remember a tip the Pro there gave us. All putts break toward the gate at the front of the property. It is a canyon after all and the mountains funnel everything toward that gate. We probably played there 10 times and this tip didn't help us know the exact break of course, but it at least stopped the head scratchers we had that seems to break uphill or breaks on what seemed to be flat putts. 17th green is a perfect example.

Thanks for sharing all the pictures and detailed summaries. I pretty much concur with all your ratings although you rank Trump higher than I would; I just never found it that interesting of a course, and the several times I've played there it wasn't in really great condition either, which should not happen at their price point.

I love Rustic and Oak Quarry, and I'd probably flip their ratings but they are so close. I've often found Oak Quarry having some conditioning issues, so that's the main reason I might drop it behind Rustic in my rating. But I think your summary nicely captures the spirit and feeling of both courses.

From your photos, I realized one thing about the top two choices. To me, Rustic is course that isn't as photogenic as it plays; the camera doesn't really capture the subtleties that make it such an enjoyable course. And then Oak Quarry is more photogenic than it plays; in photos the dramatic quarry rock walls and elevation changes make it look much more stunning than it feels when you're playing it.

And you pretty much nailed the traffic issue. LA people never quote miles when someone asks how far to something - they only quote time. It was always astounding that from the west side you can drive for 2 hours any direction and you're still in LA. I lived on the west side for 20+ years, and most people from other parts of the country have little grasp of what the traffic can really be like and the distances between areas. I still chuckle at the time some business associates from the east coast thought they could do an all-morning meeting in San Francisco and then drive to LA for a mid-afternoon meeting.
