Us kids tournament and drive chip and putt equipment rules

I was wondering and can't find any info. Do junior golfers in the drive chip and putt and the us kids golf tournaments have to follow the groove rule of 2010.

Typically with drive chip and putt the first couple of rounds your almost better off with a putter or bump and run. I often thought my kids should just putt from the fringe since in a lot cases that what they would do from where you actually chip the ball. Seen the chipping portion on the fringe more then once at local events the last few years.

I wouldn’t use use an old club with illegal grooves even if you actually had had one still in good shape. The higher you go the more likely things get checked out so I would use conforming clubs. It’s a stupid reason to have an issue especially since new wedges work pretty good.

Umm very clearly stated you can't use a putter for chipping at DCP otherwise yes it would be the smart play there. You can use any club but a putter including a chipper (i've seen and asked about that) but you CAN'T use a putter to chip.

I was just wondering I was thinking about picking up a set of pings for my son but did not know if they followed the groove rule if I remember I could not find the ping thrive set on the usga site

I haven’t really looked at DCP rules in years so they must updated the rules sometime. I have a love hate with that competition one one hand you get to go Augusta but there is a ton luck involved at once you get past a few rounds.

Hard to imagine a set made by ping after 2010 that would not be a conforming club. Which quite honestly should be hard to find when your talking about junior sets in 2019. Even if you had a really old set and made it to Augusta I would bet someone would find a new set for you. Your talking about young kids with parents new to golf in DCP and something that really only in the higher tournaments such as AJGA that is actually enforced.

So more looking into this the only US Kids golf set that is on the USGA site is the tour series none of the others are on there so. I sent a email to US KIds golf tournaments and DCP and I will let you all know what they say.

Be shocked if they told you yes it was fine. For rec use no one will care. I still play irons with older groves but I don't play in tournaments anymore. But if you are using them for tournaments I highly doubt US Kids will allow it because they follow USGA rules. DCP is another one that is sponsored by the USGA once again I doubt you be allowed to use them. If they say yes I am cutting down my old spin milled.

I am with you on that love hate. Gotta try to at least get to Augusta. But all of golf requires a little luck at times. I think it also varies where you qualify at to how difficult they make the setups. Our PGA sets up the pitching as easy bump and runs but I've seen some where its about a 25 yard shot.

I’ve never been to a DCP local or otherwise that has chipping from the fringe.

Setups are all over the place you never know what it will be like. I seen some good setups but also seen stuff that was just plain dumb.

My first introduction to DCP which now is a while ago they chipped on the fringe and was probably 4 or 5 years ago now. My kid did a nice chip but it rolled a little too far. The kid that won the chipping actually flubbed the shot and it rolled right next to the hole.

The driver part though where the worst setups usually are I seen just crazy stuff things like sand trap to catch your ball or out there is a severe slope so anything that hits over 150 or will roll out of bounds.

Honestly there ok for my 8 year old but just a distraction for my older kid. Not all setups are bad but they do vary a lot the only good thing is they only compete with other kids on the same course.

Can you post a link to that rule? I have always wondered but never saw it posted. Thanks!

Under the "Scoring and Competing section":

Use of a putter is not allowed for competition in the Chip Skill. Competitors may only use a lofted iron or wood club for this skill. A “chipper” club is considered an approved club for the Chip skill.

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

I got a answer they follow all USGA rules even the 2010 groove rule so if your kid is in a DCP or US Kids golf event they have to use conforming grooves
