Wood/hybrid gapping???

so i am having a gapping issue with my longer clubs and im sure it comes down to contact and consistency. my driver i carry in the 230-235 range plus, mishits are 215-225 yd range. ive always had a love hate relationship with 3 woods, i am either smoking it or its costing me shots, there is no in between. when im on my 3 wood is n the 210-215 yd range and when im off it hovers around 200 yds. i guess my question is should i stick with a 2 hybrid at 17 degree which i carry 195-200 yd ish on solid strikes with a higher ballflight?

i recently been looking in pulling out my 4 iron (20.5 degree of loft) and replacing it with either a 3 or 4 hybrid. i recently hit a 3 hybrid 19 degrees and it was giving me 185-193 yds of carry, would you consider that too close to my 2 hybrid for gapping purposes or is that difference ok?

just curious to see if anyone hear has replaced there 3 wood with a 2 hybrid or do they have there hybrids as close as i do between the two distances above?

Have you tried a 4 wood or 5 wood (say 16.5*-19* depending on the model)? Generally, they are much easier to hit for average players.

I am similar to you and go driver (220-230 carry), 19* 5 wood (200 carry), and 22* hybrid (185-190 carry).

I would think the 2 and 3 hybrid are a bit too close together (but not massively off). My swing speed is probably a bit lower than yours, but I've always felt like I don't have enough speed to keep a 17*-19* hybrid in the air long enough.

I'd also say look at a 4 or 5 wood. Some of your current setup are so close, might rethink that top half of bag.

I play to a 9.6hcp swing speedvaries due to arm injury, driver SS mid-high 90s on average. I have no issue getting the 2 hybrid in the air but I definitely hit the 3 hybrid more consistent. I could just choke down on 2 hybrid n get rid of 3 hybrid but I’ve struggled in past with that. I’m leaning towards getting rid of 2 hybrid and going 3hl or like you guys said 4 wood.

I am very similar to you with SS and handicap. I play a 17* 4-wood which I hit off the tee for short par 4’s and on the fairway too. I also carry a 19* hybrid which is great when I don’t have a perfect lie in the fairway for the 4-wood, and when I’m in the rough. iMHO, it’s nice having both in the bag

If you hit carry your driver between 215-235 yards, I suspect you need more than 8.5* loft.

I have played 4W-7W seven seasons. The 4W came from a demo day years back when the Tour Edge rep had the willing golfers hits both 3W and 4W. Many of us - including a couple of 270-plus driver bombers - got more reliable results from the 4W. And, some got equal or higher distance.

Test out the 4W-7W combo, and the 4W-3H option.

i guess my question is should i stick with a 2 hybrid at 17 degree which i carry 195-200 yd ish on solid strikes with a higher ballflight? ...

Is 2H much more reliable than the 3W? Beware of 2H mystique - not all can hit it well. And, it seems to bump into your 3H distance.

This tilts things back toward the 4W-3H combo.

A lot of recreational golfers struggle with the 3 wood. I'm guessing by your driver distance you driver swing is under 100mph. A 3 wood is probably not going to be easy for you to get great launch & it's tough to be accurate as well.

Switching to a 5 wood will most likely give you the same distance or possibly slightly longer than the 3 wood. 5 wood is a shorter shaft which usually means you hit the center of the club face more often compared to the 3 wood plus you'll get a better launch at your club speed. Also likely to be more accurate.

Here is a good video of the subject.

I would try a 5 wood & 7 wood setup. Ping G comes to mind. Probably find them used for a good price. Standard lofts are 17.5 & 20.5 adjustable 1 degree up or down as well. If you don't like the 7 wood the 19 degree should gap nicely as well.

I go Driver, 4 wood (16*), 3 Hybrid (19*), 23* hybrid and then get into my irons. Gapping works out nicely. My swing speed is a little faster than yours. The 4 wood gives me that 220 yard carry distance that I can cover, but I can also grip down and cover shorter distances when I need to.
