Romo should announce golf

I mean, why not, there are so many bad commentators out there it would at least be worth a shot.

Commentators are usually hired because of their voice, ability to think on their feet, initiate and keep conversations going. Analysts are the experts, the ex-athletes or coaches, a good voice is preferable, the rest of their job is taught to them and practiced. In terms of the quality of golf commentators, I doubt it's a field that attracts the best as there is likely more money and opportunity in other sports given the number of games and teams.

Romo could be a 3rd guy, he's not a commentator and his analyst skills are best suited for football, though he might be a suitable analyst for an amateur tournament or web.com

I don't watch football, so I have never heard him call anything, I just know how bad the commentators and analysts are in golf. They don't know how to get out of the way of their own voices, let alone the use of proper drama and context.

God no.

I don't get the Romo love. I like that he calls some of the plays ahead of time, but his near orgasmic voice "Here we gooooo Jimmmm!!!!!" is as annoying AF.

I dunno, I kinda like orgasms.

Listening to other guys' orgasms?

The joke. You missed it.

You punchline was probably a little premature. ;-)

I think the idea is right in that you need somebody like Romo but who has competed on a higher level in golf. A zinger is just not a good choice. I feel like he was the only guy who raised his hand when they asked who wanted to do it. Get a guy with some recent PGA experience who is well informed and calls the action in an intelligent and passionate fashion.

  • 2 weeks later...

What has someone who has “been there” (like Faldo or Azinger) ever said that has excited you during a broadcast?! Haha.

I mentioned Romo as a 3rd voice, but I’d take him over any golf analyst currently on the big networks. I’ve heard enough of the experienced guys - they’re boring. Who knows...Romo may have a golf voice that surprisingly reaches us, and that may outweigh the strengths of an guy who has Tour experience on his side.

The best choice, of course, is not available...yet.. Tiger Woods is the greatest analyst of any sport I’ve ever heard. His peak was just higher than them all. Those few holes he called on tv a couple of years ago surprised the crap out me.

I admit there are folks calling golf I'd prefer out of the booth if Romo was the replacement.

I don't understand it either. He seems so very pleased with having inside knowledge, almost giddy. I liken it to a chatty drunk girl that's watching her favorite movie, incessantly giggling and unnecessarily explaining the plot as it unfolds on the screen like we don't see it for ourselves. "Look at me, I played in the NFL, now hear me talk about it!"

Romo = very self-indulgent.....

Par Summerall and Terry Gannon are good examples. Started out as analysts in the sport they played, but evolved to the lead announcer role and other sports over time. Romo definitely a natural in the booth. He’d be great for golf.

I'm all for new ideas in the booth to liven things up (though I hope when Verne dies they just stuff him, stick him in the tower at 16 at ANGC, and play random Verne "yessirs" and "oh my goodnesses"). However, plugging an overcaffeinated puppy like Romo into the booth at a golf major is a bridge too far. I'm in the minority but I'm not a Romo fan to begin with. The screaming from the booth is awful, being more coherent than most former players is due primarily to having less CTE than Simms, Aikman, Johnston, etc., and I'd hate to see any of that translate to the golf course.

Tony is the best color guy in NFL broadcasting by a wide margin. He played at the highest level, understands what players on the field see, and presents it coherently. Golf, not so much. At the Nelson, it would be entertaining to have him do a little guest spot, like the Clint Eastwood tribute appearance, but not full time. He'll never do it, he's rich, gets paid a lot, and only has to work 6 months a year.

I must really be missing something... Tony Romo quite possibly is the absolute worst color guy of all time. The one thing you can count on is if he says "this next play will be a run up the middle" it will guarantee be a long pass. It's amazing how the guy could be wrong so as many times as he is. My brother and buddies are amazed at this and Jim Nantz's love affair with him is borderline man-love. So a NO vote for Tony as a golf commentator from me!
