Is golf your most expensive hobby?

Not even close. Buy a 36' sailboat, you'll see. And I race sailboats, that more than doubles the costs.

Actually my wife and I spend more dining in restaurants in a year than I spend on golf and I play 2-3 times a week in season (May thru Oct).

Please PM me if you're looking to adopt to lessen your tax burden.

Thanks in advance, Phil

It seems that most folks in here are saying other hobbies are a lot more expensive than golf, but I’m wondering either (a) how you are calculating that, or (b) whether many of you belong to private clubs?

I figure golf costs me $10k a year considering everything...club dues, cart / caddie fees, golf equipment, clothes, etc.

So all of you guys with multiple hobbies that are more expensive than golf...are you saying that boats and guns and horses are $20k or more a year?

I ski and that probably costs $5k a year, and we like to travel, and that is maybe $5k a year. And my kids are in to sports, art, piano, etc...maybe a total of $3-4k a year.

Anyway, I’m having a hard time seeing how folks are spending so much on other hobbies... (I can see boats and cars maybe, but guns, wine?)

Easy... No club membership.

I agree, and play at a semi-private course and spent perhaps $2500 - $3000 last year. I also fly fish and have a couple of set ups each worth more than my entire golf bag. On the other hand my sister belongs to a private golf club and spends about $15,000.00 in dues, so you can make many hobbies as expensive as you would like.

I am a private pilot. The airplane rents for $100/hour, plus $300 for accident insurance, plus $100/year for Foreflight, and my personal expenses when I fly somewhere to eat breakfast or see a friend.

I do however, fly less, so I can play more golf. :)

I voted "no" here a while back. Triathlons were much more expensive.

Fast forward to today........Virtual Reality cycling. I gave up riding on the roads as you are riding on borrowed time. There are some crazy unattentive people out there.....so, since I love cycling I've taken up VR cycling.

About the same as golf. $2,000 for the bike I already own, $1500 for the Neo Smart Trainer, $150 a year for the computer program/web access, $500 for the smart TV, $800 for the laptop computer, $250 for the steering mechanism, $300 for all the accessories to connect it all. I don't have a golf simulator in the garage.....mind is setup for virtual reality cycling. VR cycling is a blast, especially with the Neo Smart....you can ride and turn anywhere you want and the road "feel" is felt right through the trainer. I hate cobble stones!!

Right now yes, before this I was buying a lot of wet shaving gear. More custom and high end straight razors along with some other stuff. Most range at the price of a new driver or milled putter so yeah not cheap.

I got back into golf recently and decided to sell off a bunch of stuff to buy new clubs and ended up paying for my irons, driver and part of my putter with stuff I sold. But this won't be a yearly things obviously so green fees, balls, clothing, etc will be all I buy (probably) in the next two years.

Boats, depending on size, if have a slip, etc. and if it is paid for, yes can cost a lot.

Guns, depends on the guns, if you travel to hunt, etc.

Horses....oh yeah. A friend of mine told me her average monthly vet bill is about $1500. Include trailers and truck to pull it, travel to events, way over $20K...one of her trips to a competition in UK cost $7500 just to fly her horse over.

Is golf your most expensive hobby? Im really curious to see what guys have to say about this. For me it certainly is my favorite hobby. I work in the business and enjoy what I do very much. I spend my fair share still on greens fees, new shafts, grips and the likes. I also know guys that play every weekend and only use golf balls they find and havent bought a single new club in 10 years. Theyd rather spend their money on their shoes, boats, watches, cars, guitars etc.

Yes and no during the season golf is by far my most expensive hobby but here in the Windy City in the winter Shooting my hand guns AR rifles take the prize
