New TP5 and TP5X

Recommended Posts

I had my first round with the new TP5x on the weekend, summer down here in Oz, so perfect conditions.

I've played the last version a lot, so I have a good understanding of the characteristics.

It played very similar to the old model from tee, long irons and mid irons. I found the new model to have a little more spin with full wedges into the green and had better green side spin than the previous model.

I have never had a problem with either version feeling 'clicky' off the putter, the new model was perhaps a fraction firmer off the putter, but not alot.

I think overall this is an improvement, I thought the previous model lacked a little green side spin (i ended up with the Bridgestone BSX) however the new TP5x gives me that now....

This a great improvement overall...

I picked up a dozen of the 19’ TP5’s yesterday to try out against the older version of the TP5. I was able to get out today and give them a go. Bearing in mind it was in the mid 40’s and very windy here in PA today here’s what I saw/found.

The new TP5 is noticeably softer off the putter and feels better on short chips and pitches. The greenside spin is very good and in this regard it is improved over the TP5.

30-50 yard pitches I saw very little difference between the two other than the 19’ version again felt softer. I actually found the distance control with the 17’ a little slightly better here.

Driver distance I found the 17’ to be longer but the 19’ to launch a little lower and straighter.

Into the wind - this is where the two really showed some differences. I was hitting 6-10 shots from the same distance comparing the two and the 17’ was just miles better. There were a couple of instances where I felt like I hit the 19’ better and it came up 3-5 yards short of the 17’. With the long irons the flight was similar but with the short irons the 19’ was clearly launching higher and spinning a lot more.

Again, it was mid 40’s and very windy here today, but that’s what I saw.

Played the new TP5 today. I feel like they're definitely more durable. I used to get a few scuff marks really early into the round. Today, I got through the round with very minimal damage AND I hit a couple trees. I'm very happy with these. As for the performance, I feel like my ball went straighter but I wasn't sure if it's me or the ball. I hope it was me.

I asked this earlier, but need more clarification. I currently use Pro V1. The X has too much side spin for me off the driver which is odd considering the X is supposed to be lower driver spin if memory serves. Which TP5 should I be looking into then?

1) there's no such thing as side spin. There is spin, and spin axis tilt. It's can't spin in two different directions at the same time.

2) driver spin is largely similar across balls so you won't see a ton of difference from the TP5 to X with a driver.

Out of curiosity, why do you think the X spins too much for you off the driver?

That's just the performance I get from them. When I use the V1X my fades have way too much spin and are offline by quite a bit. V1 and I have far more control, can go after it much harder, and my misses are not in the same realm as V1X.

There's always the chance that the X doesn't spin enough for you and that's causing your flight to become a bit unstable on misses, although I wouldn't expect it so much with a fade pattern. Best bet is to get on a launch monitor and get some numbers with the various balls and go from there.

I get very low spin numbers on my driver. It's interesting you mentioned not enough spin being a possibility. When my ball misses to the right, it's nearly an erratic miss. Like, "a ball shouldn't be doing that" miss. Iron shots and around the green, loved V1X.

A ball can help with a couple hundred RPM maybe. It'll be more influenced by your swing and equipment. Maybe look for a driver with a bit more spin than what you're currently playing.

Driver isn't something I'm looking to change unless there's a massive difference with new clubs out here. I hit it high, long, and low spin.

really annoyed about people saying "there is no such thing as sidespin".

sidespin + backspin = net spin = "backspin with spin axis".

backspin with spin axis = total spin and angle

you guys are both right! it's basic geometry. if you take 3 steps right and 4 steps forward, you end up the same as if you had taken 5 steps along their net forward-right angle.

Backspin stabilizes the ball, if you have the spin axis the same on the Pro V1 and V1x, but the V1x has a couple hundred RPM less of backspin, you might find the ball that bends more than you expect when the spin axis overwhelms the backspin's ability to stabilize the flight. That being said, the '17 and '19 V1 and V1X are supposed to have basically the same amount of spin off the driver.

Driver isn't something I'm looking to change unless there's a massive difference with new clubs out here. I hit it high, long, and low spin.

I think you may have answered your own question there. If you are hitting very low spin with the driver, you may be on the boderline of not having enough spin. As soon as your spin axis gets a little off, the ball is going to bend (it sounds like you don't deloft the club, so you don't have to worry about the balls falling out of the air).

The problem with trying to explain ball flight like this is that your ball is not spinning in one direction, then stopping that rotation and spinning another way (until it hits something). It's spinning end over end along its axis.

Anyway, back to new ball discussion. I'm hoping to pick some up this week and give them a test on trackman vs last years. Will post my results when I can.

That was my quote, but when you deleted blocks it quoted mmack instead. I definitely don't deloft my driver. I'll have to hop on a launch monitor and see exactly what my spin is now and test a couple of balls. I'm going on what I see and seeing why, by data, seems to be where I should head.

I bought a dozen of each. I like the feel of the tp5 and it doesn't seem to spin excessively off the driver. I

That's encouraging to hear. I think my ball of choice has gotten firmer over the last few years; partly due to me chasing yards - and partly of course because this is the hype you are lead to believe, the ball the manufacturers produce; and with a SS of around 112-115 the X was the ball i felt i should be playing......

Point is; for 2019 i'm going back to TP5 from TP5X. Got some 2019....but not actually tried yet.

Thanks for your thoughts and good luck.

Im still not sure if either one of these will unseat the AVX but I feel like they are both solid updates.

I play in windy conditions and I am a high

trajectory and high spin player. AVX is hard to beat.

I play the AVX and tried the old TP5. They were virtually neck and neck. If this years version is really improved upon, I'll make the final switch.

Put a sleeve in play yesterday. It was a fine ball but not a lot different than the prior version. It was noticeably clicky off the wedge and putter. Think I'll stick with my CSx.

I picked up a few dozen of the new TP5's and while I've been chipping and putting in the basement the last few nights I noticed the clicky sound too. It's still a nice feeling golf ball, it just has a more distinct clicking sound than I'm used to with the pro v1's. I can't wait to get out next week and try them on the course!

So the official release has come and gone, and there's nothing on the website about the ninja star version. Wonder why.

It has a later release. March or April, I can't remember and I don't have my launch material with me at home.

I guess I'm gonna have to keep my hopes up for a yellow version, then. We still haven't seen confirmation either way on that front.
