AP2 for 13 HC

but I will order direct through titleist and have them bent there

Order a mixed set of 7-P in AP2 and 4-7 in AP3. Spec the AP3's as follows: decrease the loft by 1 deg, increase the length by 0.5" and decrease the lie by 0.5 deg. Then your 4-7 AP3's will have exactly the same length, loft and lie as stock 3-6 AP2's. But they'll be more forgiving. And don't forget to take a Sharpie and cross out the 4-7 numbers on your AP3's and replace with 3-6 :taunt:

My set up would be 5-G with a couple or hybrids to make up my long irons

This is a great topic. I bought used set of AP2's and am coming from a set of TM R9's. I like the feel of the forged irons, but I too worry if they are too "tour" or "player" for me. I'm a 12 handicap and don't play NEARLY as much as I once did as I have a 17 month old now. Starting to wonder if I should sell them and use the R9's until I have the time to devote to playing more and getting a set that I think will actually get me playing better. Thoughts?

Ultimately confidence in what you are hitting is probably the most important factor. I'm in the minority here, but without knowing anything else I would favor the TM R9s (I'm about your level at a 9 handicap and play Ping G25s, although I am not overly sensitive to feel and don't mind offset). Personally, I think the GI irons help on a) slight mishits (debatable) and b) the ball flight is higher yet more stable in the wind for me. I also don't mind just trying to hit the ball straight. Honestly, people at this handicap level probably hit 5-6 greens per round on average. I know everyone is different but I seriously question how many people at this level truly need to work the ball both ways (or how many people can really do it consistently).

The T-MB 3 and 4 iron are a better match with the AP2’’s than the AP3’s. And just as forgiving.

The AP3’s have more offset and feel much harsher than the AP2’s.

I'll be honest, I really don't/can't work the ball consistently enough to warrant irons aimed at doing that. I don't play enough. Even when I had my handicap down to an 8 about five years ago I wasn't working the ball. That being said, I guess throw me in the minority too as I probably need the GI irons. I know there is a fine line between GI and the forgiving players irons and it's all about confidence and what inspires a good swing.

Ping i series are for sure the in between but if you genuinely aren't working the ball either horizontally or flighting up and down I really don't see the point in using a players iron. If I was only a fair weather, weekend golfer playing on reasonably tame courses I'd probably use Ping Gs, AP1 or something like that. Straight, high ball flight why not!?

All good points. I don't even know that I'd qualify as your weekend golfer anymore LOL. With a young baby there is really no time for golf!

I know everyone has their opinions on wanting distance etc but for me as long as my gapping is fine throughout my bag I could care less how far I carry a certain club. To me the most important thing is being comfortable/confident swinging the club, being consistent and making sure I don't have any weird gaps. Also I think looking at handicap to determine what irons someone "should" be hitting is a good start point but not the end all be all. there are plenty of good iron strikers that have mid to high caps because they just don't have a good shortgame etc

I'm about the same level as you and typically play two courses with slope of 131 or 137 (not impossible but not tame). I don't know about you, but most people at this level think they can work/flight the ball a lot better than they actually can. Most people at this level would benefit from just trying to hit the ball straight and towards a more generous portion of the green vs. thinking they can get at every pin. And many people think they hit the ball too high, but probably 1%-5% of the people at this handicap level actually do (and if they do, it probably has nothing to do with clubhead speed but poor impact position).

9 index players are much closer to a fair weather, weekend golfer than a pro. Classic example of everyone thinking they are a little better than they actually are...
