RAW IRONS POST YOUR PICS

I'll be giving the guys at oughtonsgolf.com a call some time next week. I was gonna try to shop around locally but Oughtons will remove and reshaft for an extra $6 per club. Worth the convenience imo. Unless someone can recommend somewhere in the Philly area to have it done.

 

Unsure of whether to get my MP-4s or MP-5s stripped. But it's happening for sure.

Ha! I used to own that set ...a really good northeastern am had those originally that’s were the “17” stamps came from. His baseball number if I recall correctly. Anyway. Great patina going ! Looking good !

Haha nice! I bought them on here almost 3 years ago. Love them. Got my first ace with the 8 iron. Always wondered what the 17 was.

Sweet clubs! besides removing a few grams of weight, does stripping the finish off change the performance at all? launch angle, spin, etc.

Unless weight was removed disproportionately from one area of the club then performance would not be impacted. You need to move/remove a significant amount of weight to influence ball flight, a few grams is negligible.

Here's my 588cb's after about 20 rounds. I ultimately did not like the brown, uh rust coloration that was forming so I go at them with scotchbrite pads and oil every couple weeks.

CB's are great irons- really forgiving but I have a tough time knocking down the trajectory.

I play the same irons and am thinking of having the chrome stripped off. Did Oughtons supply you with pre and post head weight data? If they did, please could you share this for the six iron. Thank you.

I took weight measurements when I sent them and again when i rebuilt them. I will find those numbers tonight

I checked and there was no more than 4g difference in between head weights after the stripping.

These looks really good (especially with the BB&F ferrules). Any idea what the before and after weight was? I have a set of Srixons that are the perfect irons for me, but I do wish they were raw.

The whole process was very reasonably priced in my opinion and the heads were returned well ahead of the schedule Doug provided me with

I seemed to have misplaced the post strip weights but pre-strip were as follows:

 

3i: 241g

4i: 246g

5i: 256g

6i: 261g

7i: 269g

8i: 276g

9i: 285g

pw: 293g

 

I ended up changing shafts from s400 to modus 120x so i was dropping weight overall anyway.

Thanks. I may have to take a look at Oughtns. I play 1/2" over standard, so a slightly lighter head wouldn't be the end of the world.

Has anyone had the nickel and chrome stripped on any hollow bodies irons, such as the Callaway X Forged UT? If so, would you mind posting a pic?

These are some MP-33s I bought as raw heads in 2007 and used as my gamers until 2014 or so.

 

I gun blued them and then let the patina develop and never stripped them again.

 

Somebody asked about how raw feels compared to chrome...to me, raw feels "softer" due to the fact that feel directly corresponds to sound when hitting a golf ball. A well-hit ball with a raw head sounds more like a thwack than a click, so, to me, it feels softer. If you don't believe that feel is directly correlated to sound, go hit some balls with some earbuds in that are playing music so you can't hear the ball hit the club and hit range balls and whatever ball you normally play. I'm willing to bet some cash you can't "feel" the same difference you do when you can hear the sound of impact.

 

I have a set of Honma Rose Protos that I'm sending off to be stripped this week. I'll track head weights and all of that jazz as well as before and after pics for those that are interested.

my set of Apex Pro 19s that were stripped by Iron Factory. only played about 3 rounds but rainy weekend in pinehurst last weekend begun the rusting. also shoutout to all those on this thread with the BB&F ferrules.
