Slimming down the bag?

So I was looking through my bag the other night and had the sudden realization that I was well over the club limit (at 18) without realizing it. I’m playing off an 18hc, not at all competitively or even for cash, so it’s never even been a thing that I realized or considered.

It got me thinking- does anyone else carry a blatantly illegal number of clubs? If so, what are your “extras”? Any reason you like to keep them in there?

For me, I’ve got a 9 deg rogue driver, 13 deg TEE CBX T3, 17 deg RBZ Stage 2 3HL, Mizuno Fli-Hi 2 iron (18deg), TM M2 19 deg 2H, 23 deg Adams 4hybrid, Titleist 712MB 4-pw, edel 46, vokey 50 (bent to 51), RTX-3 56 & 60, and somehow I cram in a putter too for a total of 18 clubs.

If I were to try to consolidate back to legal, I’d probably pull the hybrids and the 3HL, and drop the set PW- but I like having options for finding fairways or attacking par 5s. It allows me to feel out which club I trust on a given day, which is a big deal when you arent exactly a great or consistent player. I can spend a round only pulling driver on 2 or three of the most wide open holes, sticking with the CBX off the tee and still have enough long sticks to fill in gaps at the top. Then at the bottom end I have a workable, higher spin wedge for the 110-125 range in the Edel vs the more predictable but lower spinning set PW which gives me a consistent feel coming from playing the rest of the irons. Plus ive got plenty of options for shotmaking closer in with the remaining wedges.

What do you guys think? Should I put the bag on a diet? Let me know!

I like the notion of feeling what clubs make sense for different courses / conditions.

Tiger just had his 3 wood set up to 15* for the tournament in mexico to take advantage of the thin air.

That being said I think it's actually beneficial to go ahead and only use 14 clubs in a given round. It is a significant advantage to have extra clubs in the bag for gapping or tough shots, and it's a significant skill to use/manipulate the tools you have on a given day to achieve the desired result. You might learn a few new ways to get out of certain situations and it'll put more pressure on course management which is a hugely underrated skill in the game.

Do you really use both 4 iron/H and both PWs you have in the bag in a given round anyway? For tricky lies using the specialist wedge or the hybrid or what? What is your gapping like at the top end in those woods/hybrids?

I'd go driver, 3HL,2/3H, 4Hybrid, 5-PW (not the high spinning shot maker, a well struck set PW still spins 9k+ rpm), GW, SW, LW

I honestly don't think an 18hcp needs a variety of high spin and low spin wedges for shot making, as an 18 your main goal should be clean contact and avoiding penalties/wasted shots. Having to think about shot making or what specialized club you want to hit isnt helping. You likely rarely hit that 13* 3W off the deck, probably hit the 3HL more consistently off the tee, and likely hit those hybrids better than your 4/5i MBs.s

You're overcomplicating this stuff; I don't think all these options / clubs are helping you. In fact, if you were to think thru the bag & mark the clubs you consistently hit [175-200] -175-150-125-100-75, add a driving device + putter, you should be able to get around the course with 8 clubs (might need to tweak the yardages a bit to cover the par 3's). And probably score better as you'll get more reps in with fewer clubs. Check out the minimalist golf threads running, we've got asylum members that could kick either of us in the teeth - using 7 or less clubs.

More options means more confusion. As an 18 handicap, you're more likely to see variation through differing strikes than you are from club choice. Your 2 iron, 2 hybrid, 4 hybrid and 4 iron probably cover the same distance range because you sometimes flush it and sometimes scuff it. You could get away with one club here rather than four. You'd be better off working on having multiple shots with one PW than carrying both. Use one club and learn how to vary spin, flight, etc.

You don't have to go full minimalist, but think through what you actually need. How often are you genuinely attacking par five greens in two? Do you need a club for this at all? How often do you actually hit driving iron from the tee?

I’ve honestly been thinking about doing that exact thing the past couple days- maybe just the strong 3w, the 2 fli hi (which I hit 200 with far more consistently than I should be able to), 5/7/9, wedges as needed per course, and putter. I might give it a try once the rain stops dumping in Atlanta...

You’re probably right- though oddly enough I do actually get a lot of use out of the 2 iron. I definitely struggle with consistent striking more than I’d like, which is something I’m actively working on in practice/range/lessons. I could dive in to specifics of my game, but this is the equipment forum so it’s probably best to save that for another time. Lol

I encourage you to try this. Think you'll be pleasantly surprised how this will simplify your thinking on the course, build consistency with clubs you trust, and likely score just as well or better.

Half the clubs, twice the fun!

What do you guys think? Should I put the bag on a diet? Let me know!

OK fun topic

#1 you dont NEED to change anything we're just playing for fun. Be a good man and have fun that's enough!

#2 from experience I know you have too many decisions choices, too much indecision and questions about which clubs best suit you to play your best with your skills as they are you are right now.

#3 I'll tell you what i would do

#4 Then maybe we can look at what makes sense to you based on that.

Off top really nice kit you have great taste and obviously have chosen some really nice clubs that deserve some playing time!

First of all you have like 5 clubs that all do similar things. see red below.

I'd get rid of that 4 iron chances that its better than your 4 hybrid are slim (1)

I'd get rid of 2 of your hybrids I don't care you don't know which one is going to perform on any given day or that you can hit one better off the turf. The one with the best misses stays! (2)

I'd kick the 712 PW out of the bag for the Edel (1)

Personally I'd drop the 56º as I have huge overlap with my 52º 3/4 swing and 56 full swing (1)

I'd ADD a 20º fairway wood because on average they perform better than hybrids for me. Get a tour edge with an upgraded shaft and tell everyone its a 5 wood. It's not a coincidence you want to keep that 13º for sure chances are good its a great play for you off the tee.

Now for you it's going to be different so we've got to handle it differently.

I'd suggest let the clubs I identified battle it out and see what the real distances and dispersion are when you measure you will find one or 2 that have better misses and or have slight performance differences.

Better misses stay.

There's more but this is a great place to start. Thanks for asking!

I subscribe to the less is more philosophy as well and unless i'm playing in a tournament type event with my works golf society I'll use a cut down 7 club set that gives me yardages of 210-180-150-125-100-75 and choke down on shots inbetween. much easier on the back when carrying my bag and I find i'm getting round the course quicker and improving more as i'm having to work the clubs in different ways. For me it works out a wood, a hybrid, 2 irons , 2 wedges and my putter.

Diet get rid of 13 17 18 19 degrees.

Go 16 wood 4 wood and 20 degree hybrid. You'll thank me

Call me crazy, but somehow I don't think the solution is to buy MORE clubs haha. I'd stick with the 17 and play it as a 4 wood, and probably the Adams 4h in place of a 20 if I were to go that route.

100% agree with Tingting you'll play better with a 16 and 20 wood combo zero question. But I also remember how it felt to have a really nice "safer" driver like your CBX

So I see no problem with keeping that and playing 9º 13º 16º 20º woods. Rare case when someone has too many good clubs and I would still encourage them to purchase a new one. Go for it!

I was excited thinking this might be another minimalist thread....nope. 18 clubs, wow, I can’t even Imagine carrying that many. At least get yourself to the limit of 14 so you’re playing within the rules of golf. Nobody needs 18 clubs. I consider a full bag for me 12-13, I almost never had a full 14. Last year I played 90% of my rounds with 7 or 8 and my scores didn’t change. I’ll be playing 100% of rounds with a minimal setup this year as I find it more enjoyable.

Id crank the 9degree up to 11. make it safer off the tee and if your pw is around 110, im guessing your driver is around 220-250 so more loft wont hurt your distances much but should increase your forgiveness.

17 deg high launch. safer tee options and for long approaches

pick between the 18 and 19deg hybrid

23 adams or 4 iron

5-9 712mb

pick a pw

then your 3 wedges.

14 clubs and each should have its own range.

18 handicap?

I bet you could play for lower scores with an 11* driver (you wouldn't need the 13* TEE), a good serviceable 5-wood, a hybrid (or maybe two), and 5-iron to PW. You probably need one other sand wedge, which you could learn to hit a variety of shots (thereby making you a better player).

Unless you are playing every day and practicing daily, I say keep it really simple. As simple as possible. And always get rid of clubs that misbehave. Even in an iron set.

18 clubs?!! I either too wimpy, too lazy, or both... I don't want to make my bag that heavy. Typically carry 13, but am considering even going lower. Keep the clubs that are easiest for you to hit, get rid of the rest.

OP, by my count, you've got 5 clubs with less than 20* of loft. I don't know your game but at an 18 handicap your quality of strike and swing speed are probably not going to get the most out of clubs with so little loft. And I don't know what your swing speed is but you'd probably benefit from more loft on your driver as most golfers do. You got some great advice to go straight from driver to 5W as when hit well, they are plenty long. So you can consolidate 5 clubs into 2 without any problem.

Having the 23* hybrid and 4 iron is a little redundant, especially if you have a bladed iron which sounds very hard to hit. Then I doubt you really need the 60. It's difficult to hit and you can probably develop any necessary short game shots with the 56* and some practice. 9 irons for bump and runs (no need to get cute out there, we're not all tour pros) and you're all set. So if you ditch one of the PWs and the 60, you're down to 13 and can decide on what to keep.
