Callaway Utility 2018 Iron - Anyone use yet?? Any reviews?

How is the ball flight in the 21* XF Utility versus the TM P790 21* 4 iron, higher, lower?

 

I'm looking to get a 21* and a 18*/17* driving iron, and am between the XF Utility and the P790 (when the 2 UDI comes out), and was curious as to the comparison. I was able to hit both the 21* irons into a net, and didn't have a problem hitting either one well, but obviously couldn't see ball flight hitting into a net.

 

The 21* would probably use the same steel shaft as the rest of my irons, and be used for anything and everything (tee shots, approaches, layups, low punches, etc.), while the 17*/18* would have some sort of graphite shaft and be primarily used as a driving iron off the tee, though could be used off the deck into par 5s when/if I'm feeling confident.

I’m getting the 21 degree. Playing Apex Pros 4 - PW in X100. Any opinions if I should stick with the X100 in the 21 degree Callaway UT? Opinions/thoughts are appreciated.

I play the Apex UT and then the Apex Pros from 2014 all in x100s. I used to have a graphite shaft in the UT but happy I stuck the matching iron shaft into it.

 

Edit: Just to clarify I have the same set up as you, Apex UT in 21 degrees and then the Apex Pros 4-PW.

I went with the 18 degrees UT with the Recoil shaft. I don't hit the ball that high at the best of times, but this does come out a lot lower than the Srixon UZ65 it replaced.

 

That being said, its exactly what I wanted it for. I play with a 21 degrees hybrid that I can hit high into greens, so having a club I can hit low and make run is fine with me.

 

A lot of the courses I play normally have a lot of wind, so my bag is set up to deal with those.

 

So far so good with the UT though, very long!

Best looking utility iron out there in my opinion. To me, they seem to launch higher and spin more than a lot of the other utility irons. Probably a good thing for most of us. I have the 21 bent strong and I’m anctually thinking about getting a lower launching shaft or trying the 18. Very happy with mine but the msrp is a bit stupid compared to mizuno fli hi.

Bump. Any additional feedback on the Callaway UT-specifically in the forgiveness category versus the Srixon U85 and Taylormade P790 long irons?

 

I’m looking to possible replace my 7 wood with a 21* Callaway UT.

I play the x forged ut 18* w project x 6.5 steel. Also play x forged irons with the same shaft. Ordered mine direct from Callaway and not sure if they didn't check but the swing weight was like at D5 so this thing feels HEAVY. Apart from the weight I love this thing. Low straight bullets and not that hard to elevate when hitting off a tee. On certain courses it goes longer than my 3 wood due to the low flight so it rolls out a lot. Off the deck it's fine but I really don't hit it very much, you really only need it off the deck if you're going for a par 5 in two. Even then it's probably better to hit a 3 wood and land softly.

Picked up a 21° with AD-DI 105 recently, I’d also like to hear some thoughts on the club from some who have played it for a while.

In terms of forgiveness it is still an iron so it's not as forgiving as a wood or hybrid. I definitely miss hit this thing more and lose some distance. However it does take the right hook out of play that you typically get with a hybrid. That's the trade-off I guess. I'll take it will never play a hybrid again!
