Moving from SW Florida to Gilbert.

As the title reads. I’m moving for work and a better cost of living.

I see there are a lot of mixed reviews on all the courses that aren’t the big 5 or so. I’m looking for a place with some good elevation changes with good slope and a good practice area. But, I’m not looking to pay $4500 to play there either. What are my options ? Or am I being too picky? Just excited to have more options than I have here.

You're moving to a very flat part of the Valley so you're going to need to drive at least 30 min or so if you really want elevation changes. That's Gold Canyon (Dinosaur) but honestly that design is goofy and after the novelty wears off people realize that it is a terrible golf course. Oh and it may have the worst practice area of any "name" course around here. Otherwise you're looking at a significant drive.

If you just want solid golf then look at Seville if you want to join somewhere. There are actually not a lot of golf courses here with massive elevation changes throughout the course other than a handful. Most of those are not very good golf courses. If you want views and more subtle elevation changes then we have plenty of those.

I really enjoy Gilbert. IMO hard to beat for quality of life, especially for families. Not as ideal for young singles or retirees. Golf is not spectacular. If you are looking for private then Encanterra and Seville are solid courses, albeit not spectacular. Within a half an hour my usual non private rota includes: Southern Dunes (Really Good), Whirlwind (two good courses), Long Bow (slightly above average), Trilogy (average to just below), Lone Tree (average to slightly below), Ocotillo (Only play if you miss Florida...just below average). There are quite a few other courses that you can play that arent that great but can scratch the itch. WEKOPA is about 45 mins. Saguaro is the best of the bunch. Of all the courses listed Seville has one of the best practice facilities available including a huge putting green, two sided range with a green for mid approach shots and a chipping green. Look at scottsdale for elevation changes and golf that pops.

Thanks Guys!

I don’t necessarily mind a 30-60minute drive for the right course. My buddies and I would drive 90minutes to Streamsong 2-3x a year. The courses listed give me a solid starting point. Does anyone recommend any of the local discount cards like the city card and the likes? We don’t have many like this in my area.

Also, anything decent in Mesa or should I just focus on Phoenix and Scottsdale?

I live in Gilbert as well and purchased the Phoenix city card. It’s a pretty good deal, especially for Papago, GCU, & Aguila (though the latter two are more of a drive.) Previous recommendations are spot on. Toka Sticks can also be used in a pinch if looking for a quick round close to home.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

Phoenix native, we built in morrison ranch 3 years ago and couldnt be happier, its a great place for families with kids(ive got 3 girls 7,5,and almost 3). I was worried about the golf over here as there are plenty of courses, but nothing great. Good news is that golf is infinitely more affordable on this side of town, and some east side courses such as Johnson Ranch and Poston Butte are 25-40 min vs an hour + from Scottsdale. DIRT CHEAP in summer, especially if you can get out weekdays.

Most ranges are terrible over here, with the exception of Viewpoint golf resort. Full grass year round, good grass too. New range balls twice a year.

Back to the OP's actual question.

Encanterra is a very nice and fun course to play with really nice amenities, But it has close to 500 members and is incredibly busy and almost all of them are residents of the community. While I enjoy the course a lot when my folks friends get me out I dont think it is a place I would join if I lived outside the complex.

Welcome! I'm also in Gilbert and play often with Fore Life in the "East Valley" (you'll get used to saying it). There's a ton of options for golf. I'll also recommend the City Card for playing muni's during the winter months. It's difficult to pay elevated prices for courses you're paying $10 to play during the summer. Most of us hit up the muni's until the snowbirds leave. There's a ton of character and backstories to the courses out here (like San Marcos or Toka Sticks) and it's fun to dive in and see what they offer. As far as courses with elevation change, not many options but I prefer to drive up to Fountain Hills area. Couple good spots and not a terrible drive with the backroads through Mesa.

Some great info there for me to take into consideration. We’re looking in the Val Vista area cause it’s close to work and a dog park which is important for us. Toka Sticks and San Marco are two places that look near by and fun. What is the deal with Kokopelli? The pictures look good but I haven’t seen decent reviews of it.

Looks like San Marco is going to be my place to play. I’m hoping to play Papago as my other “away” course. That place looks awesome to play and the greens look lightning fast.

I’ve been here for one week and it’s been the worst week ever, lol. That being said, I’m excited to be able to go to either Western Skies or Greenfeild lakes. My Fiancé and I went up to Phoenix today and while we were out we drove by ASU Karsten and then had lunch at Papago. I did roll some putts on the practice green because I got a new putter but I didn’t have enough time for any real golf.

I’m loving it so far. Haven’t had much time to play yet, have played 3x @ Western Skies and twice at Papago.

It’s not as easy to get a last minute early tee time but if I plan two weeks in advance it seems to be ok.
