I just really wish there was a team competition component to this somehow. Not just qualification based on where you claim nationality determining the flag you play under for a tournament that may as well be any other co-sanctioned event.

I agree. Two person teams would be much more compelling, and better fits the patriotic/nationalistic Olympic theme. Maybe even mixed teams, liked mixed curling in the Winter Olympics.

Just get rid of the individual tournament, which essentially is a very watered down WGC.

I don't envy Rory the decision of whether to compete for Ireland or Team GB. He'll catch flak either way. I'd go with Ireland, but then I'm a big Golf Weekly podcast fan.

Thought Rory had put this question to bed by saying he won't participate in the Olympics, ever.

Perhaps he did, and I don't remember it. I just remember the initial hubbub when he offhandedly mentioned he would probably play for Team GB because of his UK passport. You'd have thought he was advocating peeing on the Irish flag the way people got upset.

I still say it should be 3 person teams (2 scores each round), 36 holes team portion

12 team tournament, next 24 players in the world qualify, max one player if your country qualified

Then the top 8 players qualify for match play tournament for individual gold, silver, and brozen.

This is the tournament i want to see

Langer is currently the 18th highest ranked German golfer at #810 in the world.

Damn. I'd like to see some action on him against those ranked above him.

The Augusta Masters and British Open feature former champions. The British Open also invited the previous Senior British Open winner.

Langer against the 18 Germans ranked ahead of him. I'd like to see the odds on it anyway.

Golf gets four really important weeks every year. I wouldn't care if anyone who wasn't looking for the extra exposure just skipped the olympics. Golf channel will be telling us how important it is all next year thanks to their NBC affiliation. Yawn.

I'd much rather they made it for amateurs only (and yes, I get that almost all Olympic sports are pro now), but I'd much rather watch guys competing for a once in a life time chance than another glorified WGC event.

Very curious to see how this next olympics is going to be approached by the players, especially considering it will be held in a much more golf minded nation than brazil. Last time there was virtualy no hype at all, players dismissing it etc., but the tournament delivered a great champion with great moments and afterwards the whole experience seemed very positive both from players and viewers. Hope players like rory will rescind their previous choice to dismiss the tournament and play this one. They could do with a format change to combine men and women to make it feel like more of a team championship.

I bet to Justin Rose it's important.

Team format only with the possibility for interesting upsets would make it intriguing. India or Singapore on the podium, who would have picked that?

Agreed! Even if they are dead set on keeping it to stroke play, I cannot think of any reason to not host it with a modified High School or College match format

  • 16-20 teams of 4 with anyone in the top-100 from a country that cannot field a full team able to compete as individuals
  • Team eligibility determined either by top-ranked player, with at least 4 in the world top 300? Or determined by average OWGR of top-4 players from that country, regardless if they opt to participate or not. That's where it could get a little tricky...
  • 4 days of competition, best 3 scores each day count towards the team score.
  • Award top-3 teams and top-3 individuals.
  • Separate mens and womens competitions I guess, but would be cool to figure a co-ed format

Make it like mixed curling in the Winter Olympics.

Teams of one man and one woman, one team per country. Up to each country who it wants to send (eg OWGR or qualifying tournament)

First phase is stroke play: one round of alternate shot, one round of better ball. Top 16 teams from stroke play advance to match play.

All the pro tours count the Olympics as an official event, at least for the purposes of meeting minimum event requirements. If they want to count it as an official win and/or hand out exemptions for winning a medal, that’s cool too.

I think we'll see a fairly strong field, Japan is a proper host country and should be able to draw a good portion of the top players.
