The 60's and 70's song appreciation thread (obscurity welcome)

Saw these live, fabulous...

Zeppelin in the late 60's I was 8 rows back in Buffalo NY

Saw James gang play this in the late 60's

Ten Years After fabulous guitar

Saw the Who live in North Tonawanda NY @ Melody Fair late 60's still had Keith Moon. He would bounce drumsticks off the drums and into the audience. I was 6 rows back, and they really did destroy their equipment at the end of the show. Tough to watch as i was in a band too, nice strat & stuff... https://www.youtube....h?v=uswXI4fDYrM

Saw the original Chicago 5 times with Terry Kath

Ok since you said obscurity welcome, here's a 9 minute clip of some friends of mine. Long running band, several members. I got to meet and know many in 1971 as a friend of mine is a cousin of Richie Furay, the band is Poco. Originally the band had Randy Meisner and Jim Messina as well. When we hung out with them I met Timmy Schmidt too who took the place of Randy. Then later Timmy went on to replace Randy in the Eagles. If you listen to the harmony you can hear early Eagles type harmony, sorry only audio, no video. Also Jim Messina sings here as well. And you can hear Timmy Schmidt singing the first song, it's a medly of songs, anyway, all terrific people.

My father in law is from Tonowanda.

And this is the difference between sixtysomeping and fiftysomeping, those would have been unbelieveable shows to see.

From a guy that was more into harder rock in the 70's-Foghat and such....

you wanted a bit obscure? Funny thing is I just mentioned this song to buddies on the course the other day. None of them had heard of him.

There's always polls and rankings of such things. In keeping with the timeline established by the OP, a couple of influential "one hit wonders". And a FWIW, ? and the Mysterians were from Bay City, MI. Saw them a couple of times playing the local music scene way BITD. The group that defined the term "garage band".

Songs like this aren't written today. Rock operas telling a story, building up to a climax. The 70s was an epic musical time!

I really loved Springsteen's music from "The River" back to his beginnings. Throw in "Nebraska" as well. Basically anything pre "Born in the USA". "Darkness on the Edge of Town" was a great album, one of the greatest concert periods of Springsteen's career. This period predates my affinity with Springsteen but through video and bootleg live albums I have come to love this time. I saw Springsteen live last in 2016, The River tour and loved that concert. That marked the 5th time I've seen Springsteen live since 1985.

I saw Uriah Heep live Q, way back when. They were the opening act for 3 Dog Night. I had never heard of them. I thought 'what the heck, what kinda name is that?' They were good though.

Wasn't going to post these, because I thought they may be to provincial. But, seeing an Amboy Dukes reference. Nothing pretty here. Raw, intense R & R. Part of the strange milieu that was the Motor City at the time. Hard to believe this was 50 years ago, a half century. If you want "easy listening" music, don't play these vids.

Loud. Subversive. Volatile. Saw them several times live. Full frontal assault. You would leave the show beat-up and exhausted. The house band at the legendary Grande Ballroom. Upon release, had to chase down the original album, not the "sanitized" version with the offending language and liner notes removed. An anthem of sorts.

Still recall quite vividly seeing the Stooges play at a local music venue. Summer of 1969. Mt. Holly would have all the Michigan bands playing there all year long. In the lodge during the winter, outside at the base of the ski hill in the summer. Standing there watching Iggy writhing around on the stage. Ron Ashton's simple three chord power riff. Like WTF. This is way over the top. And no clue that in the future, they would be considered to be "influential". No Peace, Love, and Happiness crap here. It's primal.

And one more. Straight outta Flint. The members coming from two other bands playing the circuit. They became kinda big, for a brief period of time. No "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" niceties here. Mark's fuzzed out guitar, Mel Schacher's thick bass, Don Brewer's mad drumming. The "Red" album.

I remember that summer we were riding our Lemon Peelers and Orange Crates riding around the neighborhood with this stuff blaring everywhere.

I kept getting my bell bottoms caught in my chain ring and your front tire kept falling off when you popped wheelies.

Right on.

1968

I saw Gary Puckett and the UG, they were very good, Gary could legitimately sing live as well as he did on records. Another band that dressed up that I saw was Paul Revere and the Raiders. Silly outfits but they weren't too bad, at least at the time my girlfriend liked them, and she was worth taking to any concert :)

Saw Steppenwolf around that same time frame, they were very good. Saw the Hollies, surprisingly good, nice harmony just like on the records. Saw, the Guess Who, that had to be one of the most boring bands ever. No stage presence at all. Saw Credence Clearwater, very good, the band onstage however should have been called 3 guys playing while watching John Fogerty perform. I don't mean anything derogatory by that, it's just that he was the band. Saw Elton John in his early days on tour, very good.

Not sure how "obscure" this one is, and I've honestly never been a fan of the lead singer's work (especially the solo stuff), but there is something about this song:

Could pick anything off Bat Out of Hell as a rock opera song, so how about a deep cut:

All Revved Up With No Place to Go - Meat Loaf

Of course if we're talking rock operas, have to include something off Quadrophenia... personal favorite of mine:

Love Reign O'er Me - The Who
