Interesting topic. Our son is unique so I'm at a loss with him. However, the one thing that worked early on (when he started out at 4) was to include a basket of french fries after every session. The kid ended up with crazy skills. Now, it's a crap shoot. Not sure how to instill a work ethic. I think a kid must clearly observe cause/result to fully buy in - because once they hit puberty they stop listening to the words coming out of your mouth. Now, I'm trying to get my daughter (8) into it. I try short sessions at the putting green or range with a treat afterward. She's got a neat, little swing and a good attitude. We'll see how that goes.

I had a lot of fun going through that process with my daughter. Probably more so than my son because there were no expectations.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

Every kid is different, My younger daughter who is 8 has tons of talent and probably could be a very competitive 8 year old but it has been hard to motivate her. The big issue is she hard time keeping up with her big sister. She is also young so I am not worried about it either.

Long story short I decided to enter her into a tournament without her older sister. Turns out she does love golf more than I thought. She loves the fact that we are going to see her play in a tournament. She is even asking to practice and when her next lesson is. I am very surprised that she like the attention on her.

Totally agree.

I wonder if Rory/Jordan/Justin were ever bribed to play golf.

In all fairness they did grow up during the Tiger dynasty so it was easy to be inspired. Nowadays the kids are looking up to a bunch of really good golfers but they miss more cuts in their first few years on tour than Tiger has in 20+ years. Hard to root for a guy and get inspired if he's at home watching on the weekend while sitting on his couch just like you are.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Does it matter what those guys were like when they were kids? I’m not raising a future world #1. I’m trying to encourage my daughter to find her best self on the golf course, and in life.

There will always be kids that are so motivated, you have to pull them away from the golf course. That doesn’t mean every other kid should just pack it up and quit. Golf is tough for kids to learn. It takes a larger degree of self-motivation because there are not biweekly scheduled practices and tournaments every weekend. It’s a solo sport. You don’t go play with 8 friends. In the younger ages, you are lucky to have one friend that plays.

I don’t straight-up bribe my daughter (10), but I have to use a variety of motivating techniques to get her out there at times. Obviously that’s not my long-range plan, but I’m trying to ride this out and develop her skills until she finds that internal drive.

Am I the only one who finds it comical that the kids needs to almost be bribed to practice? I could see how this might be necessary for a 5 yr old, but not at 8. I guess whatever works though...

I know lots of parents who bride their kids for good grades. I coworker has a payment system for a,b based on the grade. That's either motivation or begin bribed depends how you look at it. Some of the jobs I've had in life were based on sales percentage. If you worked hard you would get more money. That is motivation or is is getting bribed?

Kids are different animal in that area some it takes an ice cream, some $2 dollars. I for one have never heard I don't want to go mainly because it just part of our schedule. But for those who need extra motivation to get their kids to do something anything but play on games I think its worth it. Try taking away a kid's allowance and you will see you might need to bribe them to take out the trash.

Here's another video my son found:

Yeah, have seen that before. It reminds me of my son. At 2-1/2 years old a film crew came over here from Iceland to film him and interview me. He had gone from catatonic at 1 to responding to their comments in his therapy session (where they filmed him) at 2 and they wanted to know how that could have happened. It was a documentary on how different nations address autism. His recovery was unparalleled at that time so he was in the film, "The Sunshine Boy". I never watched it. But...I remember him working so hard in his 8-hour therapy sessions at 2 years old that he'd break a sweat. He was clawing his way back out. This clip always reminds me of that, and of him. Golf, for us, is just for fun...icing on the cake. I know grown men who have meltdowns in golf so it, like his time in karate, is also a great test and very therapeutic. I find that funny...when he's not pissing me off on the course...

Don't bribe my kids for anything. They will make good grades and they will practice if they want to play in tournaments. It is just the way it is and will always be in my house.

Just as in the rest of their lives.  We don't reward our kids for grades, Behavior ( older now), etc and we don't punish when they mess up.

Oldest just graduated College , Middle is entering college.  The system has worked great.
