Tournament Comeback stories

Anyone have motivational experience to share? Perhaps having a long stretch of crappy play, but finally breaking through to reaching a goal? Would love to hear anything, want to see some positivity!

For me, it was in 2017. After deciding to take the game more seriously as I entered College in 2015, Spring and Summer I wanted to apply myself to some respectable amateur tournaments. I had started my first 3 tournaments with rounds in the mid-80's and getting swept by players who I knew I was better than. Recreational rounds consistently around Par wherever I played but not reflecting my skill level in tournaments. hell, I even missed a qualifier for my State Amateur (which required atleast a sub-80 round), I got to watch my playing partners who were AJGA actives got +6 through the first 9 holes and then turn it around and steady the ship to end up qualifying. In the end I missed out on a fun guys-trip to a great course, since my entire group qualified.. was a terrible feeling! Worst part was having a friend ask me to Caddy for the tournament the day after... can you believe that bullcrap? I still looped though... was butthurt the entire time!

After a full 2 seasons of crappy and inconsistent play, at the end of summer 2017, closed my tournament season with 2 3-day tournaments with rounds in the Mid 70's, and although I was not satisfied, it felt great and was a weight off my shoulders. Since then have played much more consistently. Competition is a great thing, I advise anyone who still has the ability to play decent to play tournaments when you can! It is very fulfilling when you accomplish a goal in tournament play!

I am mostly a weekend player.

My regular group broke up and roughly 20 of us quit our club after a "membership dispute." After that I became hyper-focused at work and got a few promotions. Gave up the game for almost two years until one day my older son approached me, "will you teach me the basics of golf?"

No kidding, I pulled a back muscle from getting out of my chair so quickly.

He's a great player - made the HS team in 8th grade and was #1 player through HS.

My younger son is a solid player too following in his brother's footsteps.

We joined a new club a few years back and love it.

It's great playing with my kids.

Going into last summer (junior year of HS) I had broken 80 twice in like 8 tournament rounds and shot some really bad scores. Rattled off 9 straight rounds in the 70s, shot a pretty pitiful 84 that was mostly due to the fact that I went to bed about 4 hours before my tee time (long story) and then finished third one tournament later. Ended up getting a spot on a very respectable college team and officially got accepted on December 15th. Not the best "comeback story" per se, but I started off that stretch of 9 straight sub-80 rounds with an opening stretch of double bogey-bogey before hitting a drive 50 yards right into a ditch and somehow managed to hit a blind 5 iron to about 40 feet and converting a 6 footer for par. I ended up rallying for a 75. The next day I started the same way and shot a 76 in the rain. It's funny to think that that is quite possibly the most important hole of my short golfing career, but I can't name many more significant ones that gave me such long-term momentum. I've still probably only played 20 tournaments in my life and I (hopefully) have a lot more comebacks in my future, but that was a big one.

When you are striving for a spot on a College team in general, its easy to feel overwhelmed by everything you are dealing with and on top of that having to stress about the scores you are posting because that is what coaches are looking at. Its great though that you got a spot and you found a way to steady yourself in tournament. I hope your upcoming Spring and Summer tournament schedule goes well, hopefully both of us can keep improving our tournament scores

It's especially a blast on vacation. We have a really good time. The kids have to give us strokes.

I used to practically dream about playing with my kids when they got older, maybe even moreso once they left the house and were all grown up, etc (and maybe one day teach my grandkids), but alas neither my son nor my daughter have ever really shown any interest in it. I’ve done my part...I take them to the range and the course on occasion, and have even gotten them to play a few holes here and there, but they just aren’t in to it.

I wasn’t either when I was their age, so there is still hope I guess ?

Hang on tight:

I played small college golf, 8 teams in our conference. About 6 really good players that could shoot par or better anytime, about 20 that could break 80 and a ton of not good players but great guys. The best player in our conference was about 4 years older than the rest of us, I think he was 25 and a senior. He was a great player and should have made a better run at the tour than he did, he’s an excellent pga section player still. He was better than me, and that was tough for me to admit. Our conference player of the year was simple - every school hosted an 18 hole tournament where every school played. Lowest total of those 8 rounds was individual player of the year. Going into event #8 I was 10 back of him and was in 2nd. Getting out of the van I told my coach that I was at least going to make him think about. We plugged along on the front and I was 1 under and he was 2 over, on 9 tee he hit it into a hazard and had to drop and still punch out. I hit the green, about 25 feet. He was a few closer but putting for 5. I was alive. I was keeping his card and told my coach that when I make, and he misses that I’m within 4. I made. He missed and I went to 10 tee basically dragging my swollen d- - k along, I was convinced I had him thinking and I was obviously playing well. 10 was a par 5, reachable with even a decent drive. I think I was trying to get home in 1, hit an enormous hook down the 1st fairway and he piped one. I struggled to get on in 4, he made a 3 footer for eagle while I cleaned up a 6. He shot 29 coming in with the longest putt being about 8 feet. I shot 40. And that was all for me. He graduated a week later and I had a year left, he never kicked my butt again......

This might not be motivational, but looking back it’s funny to tell. When I am with my old teammates it always comes up and I retell it, laughing at myself more and more. It was so important at the time, and means nothing. None of us were going to the tour, but at the time it didn’t matter. It was what we were playing for and it was competion. It should matter - but college golf I hope is a blast for you. It’s my best memories of playing.

I love the competition. Did you have any notable rounds in College that you are proud of?

I had the chance to play in the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Championship in 2008; I was a 3 at the time. I was so psyched up for it and was playing great going into it and with it being a 4 day event, I couldn't wait. The first day, I shot 90 because I was trying too hard to win. I wound up shooting 72, 74, 75 the next 3 days but was so far out of it I just felt dejected. It was won by like a 25hc sandbagger who shot low 80s every round so it wouldn't have mattered, but still sucked.

I was a down and out boxer in philly . Used to punch meat a lot. One day I just said you know gotta be more to this. Ran up some steps, found a nice girl, had a lot of fights where I would be knocked down 2 times and almost die , but finally won the fight . When I won I would do this Jump-Fall kinda move till people caught me.

Find your eye of the tiger kid!

The redemption rounds though.... Sorry the first day went so poorly but it was clearly not reflective of your skill set(:

Am 50 currently, started golf at 30 and had 10 yr break until 6 yrs ago

Yr b4 last I led my city championship flight after 1 round, second round 6 shots back, final round in final pairing blew a gasket and choked...barely made top 10

Last year led wire to wire all 3 rounds and won by 8.....with a very sketchy driver in final 2 rds, lol

When I got home I calmly sat down on my couch thought about everything and screamed "F#$% YEAH" and than quietly went about the rest of my day....

Was my 4th tourney ever playing and was 3 rounds at 3 different courses

76,76,81....

As a 3 you had zero chance to win that event. Dustin Johnson could play off a 3 and he wouldn’t have a chance in that event.

Thanks. I always felt like I could play so much better than the scores I was shooting and I was starting to doubt myself, that solid stretch of golf I put together was nothing extraordinary (lowest round was +1 73, highest was +7 79), I really needed it and coming through "in the clutch" so to speak quite literally changed the entire direction of my life. Best of luck to you as well!

Yeah that is what I was told. Was it fun experience but I can see where no one under about a 20 has a chance.
