C Taper 120G vs Steel Fiber i110 vs i125

Hey everyone,

So, I’ve had 2 fittings in the past few weeks to try & find the best combo for a set of PXG Gen 1 0311T heads I’m luckily inheriting.

I’m erring on the side of more info is better here so apologies if some is irrelevant, but here it goes.

I’m 5’8”, measured to 1/2” short for shaft length with 1 degree flat for lie angle, & standard grip. (This info was gathered at my second fitting)

I’m currently swinging stock loft & length Ping S59’s with 115g Cushin steel shafts, fly my 7 around 175-180, & currently have a slight in to out swing path with a 10 yard draw, with my miss typically being a 10 yard push when I get stuck.

My average 7 iron swing speed is 87-90 mph, tempo rating at a 4 (also according to my 2nd fitters measurements)

During my first fitting, the gentleman highly recommended steelfiber i110 since I’ve had some bouts with hand injuries in the past (with D2 swing weight) but he only had an i110 in a regular flex for me to test.

To be honest the interchangeable heads he had were offset, oversized, and kind of shoddy (I literally broke two of them hitting off of a mat) so between that and not having a stiff shaft, I took his recommendations with a grain of salt, though I did like the look and weight of the steel fibers.

Before breaking the darn things, I was flying that setup 190-195, launch angle 20 degrees, spin rate 6900, smash factor around 140-145 with my typical draw when striking them well.

I was a bit all over the place this day, ranging from some pull draws to big straight pushes out to the right.

I’m guessing the distance increase was due to the loft being stronger than my s59’s but he didn’t know the exact lofts..

Fast forward to my 2nd fitting, he strongly recommended AGAINST Steel Fiber since they would be too light and launch too high, and had me optimized with the C Taper stiff with a few heads that matched as close to the 0311T offset & dimensions.

The C Taper felt a bit heavier which I wouldn’t say bothered me, still flew this setup around 190 with spin rate around 64-6500. I forgot to remember the launch angle but he said it’s as low as it’s gunna get and for my swing, that’s optimal.

Now for my dilemma, does it make sense to go C Taper 120G to optimize trajectory, or go SteelFiber to protect myself from further injury, not being 100% confident in my first fitters recommendations.

Considering I’d rather not fly my darn 7 iron 190, would the higher trajectory/spin really hurt me that badly? Playing in SoCal, it tends to get windy in the afternoons so lowest spin/trajectory I’d assume would be optimal.

Thanks for any insight and apologies again for the boardwrline novel

I have the 0311t with the steelfiber 110’s. I do not consider them to hit it too high or spinny. It was the first graphite iron shat that I did not hit moon balls with. In fact the ball flight is very similar to my project X 6.0. (120 gram)

My 7 iron SS is closer to 85, and my carry is about 165 - 170 yards.

My change to graphite was driven by hand / elbow pain issues.

I can only comment on the injury side - I had Project X 6.0's for a few years which are pretty stout and comparable to the C Tapers. They did bother my elbows quite a bit. Moved away from them to C Taper Lites and now in Project X LZ. All of them have been steel vs. graphite, but my elbow issues since moving away from the PX have gone away. Depending on the severity of your injuries, this might dictate which direction you have to move in. Good Luck!

What flex did you go with in steel fibers compared to 6.0 in project x?

plain ordinary stiff. Probably could have Soft stepped 1x

Speaking of, I was told I should cut down 1/2”, would soft stepping make it slightly less stiff if I understand correctly?

What is your wrist to floor measurement? At 5’8” it would be a bit unusual to need 1/2” short unless you have very long arms for your height. It will also be difficult to swingweight steelfibers since they swingweight light to begin with at standard length.

I’m 5’7” and wrist to floor is 33.5” and I am standard length and 1 flat.
