Yu Liu (pronounced more like Lay-oh, or Lay-ay-oh, than Loo or Lee-oo), has a ways to go before she'll catch Shanshan in the World rankings, but I see it happening.

Chinese-to-English phonetics are insane. Wei-Ling... Shee?! Westerners have a hard enough time with the rather straightforward syllabic pronunciations of Korean words and names. And Chinese people tend to not be very instructive about correct pronunciations. I grew up with a bunch of Liu's and Hsu's and never once heard about "lay-oh" or "shee". It was always "loo" and "soo".

My wife is Chinese, and what she tells me flatly contradicts your version! She says "Liu" is pronounced "lyoo". It, not "lee-oo" or "loo". Wei Ling is complicated because she's Taiwanese and they have their own idioms there.

So she says.

On one of the broadcasts last year Tom Abbott said that Wei-Ling told him her last name should be pronounced "shee" because "shoo" sounds too much like the word for death, which is unlucky. So that's the pronunciation, from the source.

The more I think about the incident, the more I believe Amy Olson cheated. Not in the most blatant, conscious way. But a situation came up, and it was weird and clearly not foreseen, and Amy Olson failed to catch herself--instead, she exploited an opportunity. In that vague space between conscious and subconscious thought, I have to believe she understood what was going on.

Put it this way: if Ariya's ball had come to rest directly in Amy's line, do you think Amy still would've told Ariya to leave it? No, because she understands that a ball lying in her line can potentially ruin her own shot. By the exact same reasoning, any high-functioning golfer should be expected to understand the potential effect of a ball lying just beyond the hole.

I wonder how this type of matter would play out in a court of law. "Your honor, I did see Ariya's ball lying there. But I honestly did not think it could have any effect on my ball." It's essentially claiming ignorance of basic physics.

I tend to agree. Her answer is what a lawyer or PR firm would advise their client to say.

It's also the reason why a rules official deciding intent is a disaster. Unless the players are dumb enough to have an explicit conversation caught on tape you can't prove it.

I think marking all balls on the green takes too long so I'm fine with players chosing to leave or mark it.

I think Amy’s explanation was that Ariya’s ball was not on her intended line, so to speed things along she played without marking. Ariya’s ball WASN’T behind the hole on Amy’s line. It was to the right of the hole (I heard 3 ft, hard to tell from video). Obviously Amy would be aiming for her ball to go in the hole, so I don’t believe there was either a conscious or unconscious intent to cheat.

Where Amy was aiming is totally irrelevant. And her pace of play explanation has zero credibility.
