RIse of Custom Ball Markers

Recommended Posts

If you spend anytime on Instagram looking at golf related stuff, you cant help but notice the steep rise in people and companies popping up that make custom ball markers (and divot tools) these days. Were Bettinardi the ones to start this trend or did they just help fuel the fire? Tons of custom and colorful options are everywhere now. Lots of companies are banking on "Caddyshack" and "Happy Gilmore" or making custom ones for all the Majors.

At first they didn't interest me, mainly because I play alone so I rarely need to mark my ball. As humans I think we are drawn to shiny unique objects, so now I find myself following more and more pages hoping to score a rare one or something that fits my style.

So far I only have one of the over sized custom ones but I feel my collection may grow. Who else has noticed this trend and has a few?

Tom

**Sorry if this isnt the right forum but it felt like a better spot than the equipment forum**

Yep, there's a ton.

Theyre also used to prop up companies who dont sell a lot of putters, and it makes sense because theyre easy to make and have higher margins than other accessories or say actual putters. See Tyson Lamb and SWAG golf...all they make is trinkets.

Add to the fact that 'widgets' are easier for people to stomach when purchasing at $100 compared to a $300-800 putter, and they become a cute little thing to collect.

I 3d printed a beer can top about the size of a 10 pence piece (similar to a dime I think) and lazer cut a sheet of 1mm steel to glue to the bottom of it for my ball marker. But I have too much time on my hands.

It has the drinking hole in it so you can see the grass through it and I can use the tab for a bit of alignment aid.

It’s crazy people pay so much for these trinkets. I can’t imagine paying much more than a few bucks for a ball marker or definitely anything over $50. How is a ball marker a better “quality” than another or a better question is what’s the point? These guys make some decent trinkets at reasonable prices although I have never ordered from them.

Also, the Betti Pizza slices are HOT!

I didn't do the first one, totally regretting it, so here's to hoping they do a limited release of the full pie once they've released them all...

Ive tried to get one but I routinely forget every time they announce a sale. Im trying to improve my alignment when putting so I thought the pizza marker could help. Get behind the ball, pick your line, point the pizza marker down your line, lift and clean your ball and replace with the alignment line pointing the same direction.

I haven’t it just pops up on my FB all the time and thought I’d share. Far more sensibly prices for what you’re getting.

The quality of the piece and material used is the reason for price difference. You don’t have to see the value but the difference in cost to produce is very different.

I make divot tools and some knives as a hobby and you’d be surprised what it can cost, not even including time or tools to make them

I understand completely the cost of materials but when making a ball marker I can’t see the need to use the most expensive materials. Even if you do it’s still just a small mass produced coin and in no way justifies a $75 price tag. A knife is an actual functioning tool so I can see how using a quality material would be prudent. I guess something is worth what people are willing to pay for whatever reason but good to know there’s alternatives when it comes to cool trinkets that are reasonably priced.

A lot of them are cool and creative but then everyone will follow and copy which a lot have done.

Also for me they'd be more of a collection vs used on course, for that price and that size I don't want to lose it. I just use old casino chips or unique coins from places I've been or come across.

Given that most of you are over in the US, I imagine that the cost of shipping would not make it worth while. The files are on my brothers laptop as he is the one with the 3D printer. He gets the sheet metal to glue to it cut at his work. I would have just bought one from the link on here, but $16 plus international postage made it too much. Plus its fun having my own unique items. (I play Adams irons with ping AWT 2.0 shafts for example)

I use a Scotty puzzle dog ball marker.

I play alone so I rarely need to mark my ball.

You don't clean your ball on the greens?

Most of the time I dont, unless its got a big hunk of mud. If I do pick it up when Im alone I generally step right behind the ball or place my putter toe behind it, lift, clean and replace without moving. It works well enough for a lone non-competitive round.

That being said I want to improve my putting this year so I may start using the alignment line on balls which will require me to mark and get a feel for the line.

Hi guys, I am the founder of Imadebogey.com, thanks for all the chatter! Our ball markers are made domestically using white metal with solid weight and thickness, they will not bend or break. I do agree with a comment made earlier, a few of the other guys out there are using CNC machines and those can take up to an hour to create just one piece. We use a 3D printer and send out to get casted/epoxyed, this is why we can sell them for much cheaper. The margins aren't great in all honesty, but I love creating them and love the game so it's worth it for me. Thanks again for checking us out!

I was thinking of going cheaper though......
