3 days in Portland ME this June - give me your hidden Gems?

Recommended Posts

As per the title, I've got 3 nights in Portland ME this june and would love to try get a round to two in. My preference is for architecturally good (not as fussed about conditioning as others may be) and good value. I have a car but we are staying fairly central.

Let me know what you recommend!

Thanks

Sable Oaks has closed its doors. I highly recommend The Ledges as well but probably 45 minutes south of Portland. Webhannet and Cape Arundel both great options within 30ish minutes from Portland, especially if you like to walk. If you’re willing to drive an hour or so north from Portland Belgrade Lakes is phenomenal.

Ugh...that's a shame. Sable Oaks was a really fine course. Thanks for the update, though.

You can play the Ledges for sure. DriverWedge and I get in a round or two per year at that place. Fun to play. If you want some better venues, you need to get away from Portland. That area is for the tourists.

I'm actually moving to Portland soon and have been trying to scout courses in the area to play and everything close seems to be private. I was planning to start a new thread but I may just keep an eye on this one.

I can say that Cape Arundel, Belgrade Lakes, and Ledges are all fun courses. I played Cape Arundel for the first time last summer and loved it. That would be my vote as it's closer than the other two.

Let me know where you wind up... I live 30 minutes south of Portland and play my golf at Webhannet in Kennebunk Beach - great membership options especially if you're under 40. Make sure you get involved with the Maine State Golf Association as they do a great job with tournaments and have at least one event per week on some of the state's best tracks.

I am going to be in the Back Cove area of Portland. Thank you for the info! I will check out that course and the Association! I'll be turning 30 this summer so I am fortunately still in the "young professional" demographic. I am hoping to be able to join Portland Country Club next year but I am always looking for new places to play and will check out Webhannet!

I played in the New England Amateur at Portland last year - it's a Donald Ross gem. I know there's a waiting list of sorts but it may not apply for the "young professional" demographic as I know they're making an effort to get some younger folks in the door and paying dues. Give me a shout when you make it up this way - would love to drag you out to some MSGA events.

That's great that you were able to play in that! I was following along with all of the bad weather as my friend's brother was also playing in it. And I will let you know when I am up there! I'm looking forward to getting involved.

Good looks! $149 a year for unlimited range usage may make the drive worth it for some weekend training sessions.
