Atlanta Georgia Private Clubs

Recommended Posts

Thank you all. Based upon all your feedback.

I think I may be most interested in this category. Do these four clubs fit all the specs from my original post?

Ansley -Established 1912 - Established 1912- I like it because it fills the categories of older, traditional, pool. Does it have a caddy program? My only concern is: Only a nine hole course? Question to those who have played or belong. Loop it twice. Boring? Beautiful 9 holes...But... how tough to grab a tee time? Swing by the club for a quick nine. Impossible or get right out?

Druid Hills- 18 Holes- Established 1912- I like it because it fills the categories of older, traditional, pool. Does it have a caddy program?

Dunwoody - Established 1969- I dont know much about it.

River Club - Subdivison Club? Even though Million dollar homes... Still a Subdivision?

Subdivision clubs scare me. Golf courses require a lot of money. It seems to me that "Community developers" tend to build courses only to sell later..when the going and costs get tough. I don't want to pay a high initiation fee now; only for it to be $500 or less later to join. ie: CCorp CGate.

Does anyone know the exact current inition cost? For each of the four. Anyone play.. the courses above?

Thanks

Not Scratch

So one thing to clear up on the Ansley in town course. It is a 9 hole layout but, it has 18 tee boxes and actually has 10 greens so while you play the same pins on most holes, the tee shots, distances, etc. all change up on the back so it keeps it interesting. As far as jumping out for a quick 9 after work in town is generally not an issue, but getting prime tee times on the weekends can be a little more problematic if you don't plan ahead.

As for advice, being south of the city is going to be tough for any of the more traditional clubs in Atlanta. Most in-town clubs have courses up north, but getting there from south Atlanta can be a bear. I would probably try Druid Hills as my first option if I were in your shoes you have 18 holes fairly close and you will be able to use the clubs amenities since it is all together. Piedmont has a course by the airport which would actually work well for you, but the club pool, etc, is in midtown so you would likely never use it and at the price point that is something to consider. In additon, you are probably 2 years out with the networking you will have to do to get an invite and I believe they currently have a waiting list as well.

Best of luck.

I would also add that the tee boxes at Ansley are shifted slightly between the 9's. Hence, the tee shot may require a fade on #4, but requires a draw on #13, etc. It is a fun track right in the middle of the city.

I lived in Atlanta years ago, and recently considered a move back (and went on a club membership quest).

The reasons you aren’t getting what you’ve asked for are numerous.

1. What you asked for specifically doesn’t exist in Atlanta.

2. If you aren’t used to Atlanta traffic, and you think a 35 mile drive from Southside to Marietta (for example) would be doable, then I don’t know what else to tell you. It isn’t doable with any type of regularity. So even if you did find something that fit your criteria north of Atlanta, you may as well not consider it because it would be like living in Providence and asking for clubs in Boston. You’d shoot yourself after the 3rd time you tried the commute.

3. Any of the “prestigious” clubs in Atlanta are going to be $60-120k or so, and again will mostly be north of the city.

4. If you are willing to drop $100k for a club that might take 2 hours to get to, then you are asking the wrong group of people because it would appear that you couldn’t care any less what it costs and whether you could ever get to it to even play it unless you drove in the middle of the night.

Sorry these guys couldn’t be any more help, but everyone tried.

Good thread here - although a lot of outdated information on fees and waiting lists/etc. Here is a half-way tounge-in-cheek try at an update for the new decade.

Atlanta Golf 101:

Tier 1: A. Peachtree, B. East Lake:

Play these if you get the chance. Bobby Jones built Peachtree after he got sick of playing long rounds at East Lake (East Lake used to be the Atlanta Athletic Club Golf Course). If you have a shot to join either of these, you already know it. These are old Georgia and/or old money clubs. They are also the best in terms of camaraderie, conditioning, and service. caddies mandatory.

Tier 2: A. Capital City, B. Cherokee, C. Piedmont Driving Club, D. Ansley, E. Druid Hills

These are the old in-town Atlanta family clubs. These are the kinds of places with pools, tennis, restaurants, swim team, gyms, etc. You will not get into a "Tier 1" club if you are not already in one of these "Tier 2" clubs. These clubs regularly compete in intra-club golf and tennis matches, kids swim meets, have cross-club billing privileges, etc.

All but Druid Hills have multiple campuses with an in town club and an out of town club with a large golf facility. All require multiple rec letters, interviews, and formal invitation to join. None of these clubs have "waiting lists", they prefer to use the term "candidate pool", which is a way for them to fast track the people who they like the best to the front of the line for the next opening. Legacies get discounts on intitiation and priority for membership openings.

CCC: Most expensive and oldest (1883) ($120k). Three Clubhouses. Formal Downtown Gentlemen's Club with fine dining, formal ballroom, event space that is walking distance to MB Stadium, State Farm Arena. Country Club on Buckhead/Brookhaven border with 18 hole golf course, full practice facility, resort style swimming pool, gym, indoor lap pool, 6 restaurants, on-site childcare. Golf Club at Crabapple with 18 hole course that has hosted WGC, USGA, GSGA and NCAA Championships with large clubhouse. Most difficult to get into right now due to large demand and limited membership openings. Caddy program. Rep member: Buckhead MILFs, Real Estate Guys, Bankers. Cherokee: ($90k). Two Clubhouses. Formal Buckhead converted mansion with swim, tennis, gym, 5 restaurants (including full breakfast service), and formal event space. Created in 50's from folks who were sick of waiting on PDC or CCC wait lists. Massive recently renovated Golf Clubhouse in Roswell on Chattahoochee River with 36 holes. Best food of Any Atlanta club. Beautiful facilities. No in town golf. Rep member: Transplanted Fortune 500 CEO's, Doctors, Politicos (Buckhead clubhouse is about 500 yards from Governor's Mansion). Caddy program.Piedmont Driving Club (the "Driving Club", 1887). ($90k) Two Clubhouses. Formal midtown clubhouse adjacent to Atlanta Botanical Gardens and Piedmont Park. PDC actually donated their original golf course to the City of Atlanta to create Piedmont Park. For many years PDC was almost as hard to get into as Peachtree Golf Club, and PDC did not have a golf facility. Then they built a golf course in 1998 and they had to bring in a bunch of members to help pay for the construction and upkeep of the second clubhouse and golf course. Their midtown club has swim, tennis, squash, 3 restaurants, and on site childcare, and is probably the most impressive club facility in Atlanta. Their golf club is situated around a large lake South of Atlanta and is very scenic and beautiful. The club keeps a dock with fishing boats so members can go fishing in the fully stocked lake. Also has a Par 3 course. Mandatory one year wait period. Need 25 letters of recommendation in that one year period. Rep members: Lawyers, bankers, people who never use the club because they spend their weekends at another club in an exotic location, elite gays, trust fund kids whose parents are paying the tab. Caddy Program.Ansley. ($90k, 1912). 9 Hole in town course with two sets of tees and the best shot in Atlanta being the first and 10th tee shots. Reputed as the "party club" in Atlanta. In town clubhouse with 4 restaurants, on site childcare, pool, tennis, gym, event space. Historically an "easy" club to get into, BUT surging in town population has brought raised invitation fees and a deep pool of potential members waiting 1+ year. Settindown Campus is in Roswell and is best test of golf in Atlanta area. Rep members: 40 year old retirees, investment bankers, divorced millionaires, soon to be divorced millionaires.Druid Hills ($70K). 18 hole in town course. Leans liberal, is near Emory. Very different vibe from above clubs. Rep member: Emory professors, Stacey Abrams donors.

Tier 3: Atlanta Athletic Club (70k): You can write a check and join this club today. This place is like a sports Disney World. 45 holes of golf. US Open and multiple PGA Championships hosted. Huge aquatic area with waterslides. Indoor basketball court. lots of restaurants, on site childcare, barber shop, tennis stadium, indoor tennis, even a nap room in the mens locker room. See also: Wesleyan School. Rep member: NFL Quarterbacks.

Tier 4: A. Dunwoody CC, Marietta CC, Athens CC, Idle Hour CC: All strong , family country clubs with the normal amenities. 30-50k. Pick based on your location.

Tier 5: Mega Neighborhood Clubs: TPC Sugarloaf, River Club

Tier 6: Rivermont, Berkley Hills, Pinetree: Strong golf courses with great members who love GOLF. Not snobby in the least.

Tier 7: Club Corp/Semi Private

Atlanta Golf 102: Vacation clubs

Sea Island/Frederica/Ocean Forest: The OG Atlanta vacation place.Mountaintop: The South's Discovery Land Co destinationWade Hampton: Old guys. Ocean Reef: Atlantans with airplanesBakers Bay: No longer there?Lyford Cay: Atlanta folks who married Atlantic Coast folksThe Cliffs: Clemson fansAtlanta Golf 103: Out of Town golf clubs:

Augusta: Peachtree members and also some people who Peachtree blackballedHonors: Tennessee transplantsShoal Creek: Alabama TransplantsHeadwaters: Splinter club from Wade HamptonOhoopee/Congaree: People dying to make you feel left out for not knowing about it or having played itYeaman's: South Carolina TransplantsFloridian: Atlantans with friends who have airplanes

Alright - what did I miss?

@Transfusion I would nominate this as one of the best first posts ever. Your post is so good and has so much info I think your post should be pinned to the top of the Southeast forum.

Yes to Reynolds - that is the vacation club for Atlantapeople existing in the middle of the “Likes private golf clubs/Likes pontoon boats”/“Still listens to Larry the Cable Guy” Venn diagram. Also a sneaky large yankee contingent over there doing their best Rhett Butler impressions.

Hawks Ridge and Golf Club of Georgia probably belong right above the mega neighborhood club category. Awesome courses that are far enough away and expensive enough to keep the weekend hackers off the membership list.

Standard club is the historically Jewish club in town. I have never been invited out there so I don’t know much about it other than it used to be adjacent to what is now Phipps plaza before selling that land and moving out to Duluth. There was an AJC article in it a year or two back detailing some financial woes they were having.

The Farm is the pre-recession Dalton carpet industry club. Like Golf Club of Georgia, was really something in it’s heyday.

Lookout Mountain is a Raynor course on an unbelievable piece of land. The whole area was originally set out to be a high end summer tourist destination but somewhere along the way they forgot to get rid of all the hillbillies up there. I’ve always been confused about why Atlantans seem to prefer Highlands over lookout mountain. Even though it is in Georgia, I’d put LMGC in the Tennessee golf scene, it basically being a Chattanooga club. Their MG, the Swing Ding, is the stuff of legend.

I put Sugarloaf in Tier 4, Standard is a tier 4 as well, a smidge below Dunwoody.

I also think Druid Hills belongs with AAC in tier 3. I never would have even thought about putting it up there with Ansley, CCC, Cherokee or PDC.

From an overall club perspective, PDC and Capital City are about tied from a prestige perspective. I am sure both sides will fight it out about who is "better". PDC is more old Atlanta money, and Capital City is more new Atlanta money. Neither have an ordered waitlist so even if you have your sponsors you can get passed by a new applicant with better sponsors or more prestige. PDC course and golf clubhouse is awesome, got to play it last fall. PDC course drawback is it is by the airport, and I bet no member lives within a 20 minute drive. PDC main clubhouse is basically the center of Buckhead and spectacular. Capital City has 2 courses. I have not played either but hear the in-town course pales in comparison to the Crabapple course. Crabapple course is 30 minute drive from the main clubhouse at 6 AM on a Sunday morning. So less than convenient.

Regardless, both clubs are more about the club than the golf. If you are a member at either you a) know a lot of important people b) have lots of money, and c) can likely play just about wherever you want whenever you want.

I think you have tapped into a very common and vigorous debate among the Buckhead crowd: ranking CCC, Cherokee, and PDC. I agree that the social status of the club itself is the main draw among these three, and the golf is secondary.

PDC folks do love regarding PDC as “the” Atlanta club, and in pre-Olympics Atlanta, it definitely was. But once PDC built the golf course it could no longer afford to be as exclusive as before. Today the PDC new member list is pretty much folks who are getting the legacy discount or folks who got tired of waiting on Cherokee or CCC members to die and open up a spot. The mood at PDC is very much centered around an old-south-lost-cause type myth of pre-modern Atlanta. And also despite having the most formal Facilities, it is not a stuffy place in the least.

Cherokee may have the most formal actual membership and standards of decorum of the three. The antics that made the paper from PDC a few years back would never fly or be considered humorous here. Although They did have a whole 2nd wife porn star fiasco here back around 2015, you are expected to be on your best behavior at this club.

For a long time CCC was mainly a business minded club to hold meetings downtown that also had a quirky little neighborhood golf course and pool and tennis out in Brookhaven. Then as the Atlanta population boomed, so did the club. In 2000 CCC built crabapple and immediately hosted a WGC event that Tiger won. Then in 2008 CCC tore up their entire in town course and replaced it with a top drawer par 70 track complete with zoysia, sub air, a full driving range and lakeside holes. More recently they have renovated the pool and gym and also have a big crabapple renovation on the horizon. They now have an inordinately long waiting period and the highest initiation in Atlanta.

PDC

Strength: old school reputation, great midtown clubhouse

Weakness: golf is at the airport. No locker room scene. Hope you like racquet sports.

Cherokee

Strength: Amazing food and service. 36 holes of golf at one Roswell location

Weakness: no in town golf. More than a little stuffy.

CCC

Strength: only in town club with pool, tennis, dining, and golf at same location. Best symbol.

Weakness: Cost and wait time are the longest of the three. Can be crowded.

Fun argument and there are no wrong answers. The main attraction at each is probably the people-watching.

Well, you might have nailed it again. I'm a Reynolds member. I like private golf clubs. Pontoons are great for drinking and relaxing. and Larry the cable guy is still funny to me. But after seeing my avatar, you probably already knew that.....
