Level Tee Boxes - The Thread of Simple Pleasures

Simple Pleasures:

How about a parking lot with reasonably-large spaces?

For that matter, how about people optimizing space and spread TF out a little instead of trying to find the closest possible spot to the clubhouse?

How about a credit card machine in the clubhouse that works in under 5 minutes?

How about a golf cart with brakes that actually work?

How about people spread out on the range when it's late in the day and shadows are long?

How about smokers actually make an attempt to stand down-wind?

How about a golf cart that doesn't seem like it's about to die as I'm driving off the first tee?

How about a gas cart that doesn't explode forward when I step on the accelerator giving me and my buddy whiplash 5x a hole?

How about when I bust a big drive on a par-5 that I actually get a proper, level lie in the fairway?

How about people repair a pitch mark or two on the green?

+1 for the repairing pitch marks. Nothing drives me more bonkers on league night than a bunch of un-repaired pitch marks. You are playing in a men's league for Jack's sake!!

Evening with an empty course and a warm breeze.

A late afternoon round with my Dad ( Don't know how many more of those I'm going to get, he's 80 now )

Freshly cut and rolled greens....nothing like quick and pure.

I love those moments where I just like 'golf'. I'm a bit repetitive but most mornings (with a coffee in hand) or afternoons (with a beer in hand) I'll sit back in the cart, look around and just say "I like golf...golf, golf, golf" (cue anchorman quote about scotch here). I'm lucking enough to hit this vibe almost every round. :)

This thread has done two things:

1. Make me appreciate the course I belong at. Our tee boxes are like the greens at some courses, and our greens are immaculate, fast, and true (except the 2 times a season they get punched).

2. Make me depressed about the weather when I look out the office window. It's currently -19*c, with ~1 foot of snow everywhere. The only golf I'll get to play this weekend, and probably for the next 2 months, is on the trackman into a net. :(

The flight of a nutted driver over the corner of a dogleg

The crisp thump of a perfectly struck greenside bunker shot

Mowed walking lines thru the rough at the tees

A simple thing I miss: the sound of spikes on pavement. Like horses on cobblestone streets, magic.

An empty golf course at twilight. There is something spiritual about walking down the fairway when it is near silent and the sun is going down. By far the most inspirational place I can be.

There is absolutely, unequivocally NOTHING better in the game of golf than this right here.

And the deer are out in the fairway looking at you funny and the woman you were randomly paired with says it's getting dark but I think we have time for one more.

Figuring the yardage to the pin yourself the old fashioned way, without a GPS or a laser rangefinder- and being right

That inner satisfaction, however brief, that a perfectly struck shot gives you as you watch it glide towards your intended target

Sweet spot, when found, it may help bring about the best of rounds. When not found, the round may, simply not be pleasurable...

This time of year it's a 40 degree day with a little sun and nothing more than a light breeze. Perfect weather for leisurely walking the course with a few layers and a beanie, and the courses are virtually guaranteed to empty, especially in the morning.

A beanie...that I want to see.

Another great day for golf - a balmy 38 degrees :-)

That's a great one, spikes on pavement really sounded great.

Teeing of first. Doesn't happen often as I like to stay up and sleep in.

Water stations that actually have water in them. Don't know how many times I have come up to one and it is empty.

No penalty strokes a round, constant battle.

Over the past few years I've been able to play quite a bit of golf with my two sons, 17 and 21, and father who's 76. Makes for an odd foursome since by all rights we should probably be playing from three separate tee boxes, but we make it work and it's just the best. Grandpa picks up the tab too...treated to Coyote Springs and Wolf Creek a couple weekends ago. That Wolf Creek round was one for the ages.

Have to admit I probably be talked into trading it all for level tee boxes though, man I hate teeing off with the ball below my feet!

My wife did that once. Just don't be surprised if you decide to only play nine and come home early and a couple of nude people jump out of your bathroom blindfolded like a damn magic show ready to double team... well you get the picture.
