Can Dustin Johnson's swing hold up in his later years?

I'm buying most of this, Richard. Good insight.

Hard to say what goes on in the heads of these guys, not too much in DJ's case (sorry DJ fans, it's true).

I don't like him although is one of the best on tour.

He's not a bright guy, cupped wrist and all.

He's not a businessman - so he better keep winning to keep up with his lifestyle (and keep that "partner" in high fashion).

He's not an outwardly expressive player but that doesn't mean he is not driven to win.

Re: the cupped wrist

Just read an article where Butch commented that "he left it alone" because it works for DJ.

Out of curiosity, the characteristics of him that you listed, are those reasons you are not a fan of his? Not asking to explain your stance, not everyone is going to like everyone.

My reasons for not liking DJ are not important to the thread.

Some people don't like car air fresheners, port wine cheese or tube socks - in much the same respect, I don't like DJ, Kuchar's dad, Phil or Tabitha Furyk.

I'm with ya on the car air fresheners.....

DJ is one of those guys who has tons of talent but he's not exactly on the same mental plane as Jack or Tiger. He probably has more discipline than Daly......I have compared him to Wieskopf before, but I think Tom was smart, his problem was drinking....In the end he will be considered a top 5 player of his era...but certainly not of all time.

DJ has a pretty nice looking left hand swing.

His lefty swing is better fundamentally than his righty swing!!!

Some people don't like car air fresheners, port wine cheese or tube socks - in much the same respect, I don't like DJ, Kuchar's dad, Phil or Tabitha Furyk.

I’m “meh” on car air fresheners, though I prefer em under the seat or hangin under the front console on the hood release lever, I’m not familiar with port wine cheeze though Maddie says that I have the pallet of a dog, so I’ve probably eaten it and went back for more and I’m ok with tubes though goin back to my college game socks, I’ve always pushed em down around my ankles ;)

I’m also “meh” on DJ as my Tour Bud says that while he is a good guy, he can’t hamdle his booze and has virtually zero impulse control when drinking, and this ain’t heresay, lol .

I don’t know Kuch’s dad, and my Tour Bud also said that Phil’s the real deal, is as nice as he appears to be and is a good guy who’s more into his wife and family than hangin out in the locker room with the boys, which I can respect. What I can’t respect is how he took it outside the locker room with Tom post Ryder Cup. While my Bud had a valid point in that I’ve never been in a PGA locker room, I pointed out that he’d never been in a college football locker room, and mine trumped his, so he could just STFU, lol. He didn’t shut up, he hung up, lolol. Putz ;)

But Tabitha????

Bro, I think the world of you and there’s no one on this board that I respect more but WTF did Tabitha do or say that got your dander up??

I know her and she’s pretty close with Maddie and she even laughed when I accidentally vomited on her Sable coat, lolol

Madison insisted that I join em the evening that I’d had chemo earlier in the day and well, it was a rough session and evening, lol ;)

I’m only speaking for myself however I’ve known her since shortly after they met back in the 90’s and have seen her in a lot of situations and she’s a Sweetheart?

Anyhoo, have a great weekend Brother?

Cheers?

I wouldn't recommend further analysis on Ferguson's criteria. I often get the feeling he dislikes things more for his own amusement then anything else.

I can understand. Personally, I have similar feelings about modern country music, electric cars, and people who overuse the word "like". There's no rationality to any of it, but I'll bay like an old man with low blood sugar towards anyone pretending to listen.

A lot of interesting thoughts. Players that must win are more rare and to make myself out to be a grump I think it is even less common today. Whether it is how players today grow up competing or the money of sports I just don't see as many.

I can remember growing up there was nothing more important to me on the field than winning. It wasn't until I played on a hockey team with only two other guys with any experience that I learned you shouldn't expect to win all the time. I am probably much nicer to be around now than I was as a young man but I do miss that feeling of winning. Golf has probably helped drive that fire out as well. Hard, hard game.

Not everyone is cut out to be Tiger Woods.

Since we’re on words, likes & dislikes, yada yada yada, WTF is up with the word “hate” and the new definition that it has taken on in today’s world????

To me, “hate” is a very very strong word, with very very strong emotions tied to it and emotions that I can say through 58 years on this earth that there is only one individual who has risen to the level of me feeling “hate” towards them

Now, it seems that if you disagree with one of these kids, you’re “hating” on them and or if you happen to have a differing opinion, you’re “hateful,” lolol

Whatever happened to disagreeing with someone, disliking someone or having different view points and opinions and either working it out or walking away??

Now we go from liking and/or agreeing to HATE, lolol

We seemed to have skipped a few levels emotions wise, but WTF do I know, lolol

I’m a dinosaur ? ?

Stay well Bro & keep the Faith!!

We ain’t extinct yet?

Cheers?

I agree with what Dr. Block has been posting. There is no doubt that DJ gets into a few positions that are pretty unique to him given his flexibility and athleticism, the question is whether or not that is harmful to his body, and I don't think any of us can say for sure. What we can say for sure though is that his swing is pretty dependent on these "gifts* so it is not unreasonable to speculate on the longevity of them. If he takes care of himself then I imagine he has plenty of years ahead of him.

I think he will hold up okay...but he has to start dialing it back at some point.

Ive never seen him mix up the full swing shots though. True feelers and punches. Its always such rockets with his athleticism and a punch swing is still almost at parallel. I think if he transitions closer to senior tour days he'll actually still have elite rotation and width like a VJ/Couples did.

The Good Doctor has nailed it. "Like" has become a link to other things. The association of like or hate seems to have systemic consequences. Look at all the folks that turned on Jim Furyk - I say, why not turn on Tabitha too, and her family and their neighbors.

I was just trying to make a point about DJ, that like him or not, he's going to win more and he's got age on his side.

DJ's swing, even his all-out rips which are rare, don't really seem like they're putting a ton of stress on his body at all. In response to the OP, I don't think he matches Phil's career because he simply won't want to play that long. He's already 5th on the PGA TOUR career earnings list. By the time he's 40 he could be at 80 mil in earnings. It's a common thought that once this generation's crop of players get to Champions tour age, most of them won't even play the Tour because of how much they'll have made by that point.

That common thought has been going on for years though. Most of the guys thrill in the chase and the competition. They are not going to sit at home counting money. That is why guys like Love, Toms, Langer are still playing.

As I understand it, a rotational swing with lots of right lateral bend is better for your swing and back. Anyone who's ever struggled with early extension (me) can tell you that's where your back problems start to come up in force.

Should be pretty telling DJ's only "injuries" haven't come from swinging a golf club.

Not sure where you heard a lot of right lateral bend is better for your back because it's not really. Your spine will be more kinked to the side which isn't exactly good for discs.

By the time DJ gets to 50, if he even continues playing in his mid-40s, he could easily be at $100MM in earnings. The guys you mentioned aren't over $45MM. I think we've seen that a lot of current players love their lives away from the course just as much as their time on it. I don't think you'll see many of the greats from today playing a lot of champions tour events.

We will see what happens. For many on that list the money was made over 20 years ago. Inflation matters. And many are over $50m combined earnings.

I am sure you are correct-some will play and some will not. As with every generation we will likely be a bit surprised at which ones do play.
